2 In last week s bulletin I tried to give an account of our recent PPC meeting. So much of the meeting was taken up with the offertory increase presentation from Our Sunday Visitor, we did not report on the beginning of Lou Bodnar s report on the recent parish survey. This will take a while to break down and understand. Lou gave some results of how we answered many questions. While many see our parish as somewhat vibrant and approved of many parish efforts the need for more attention to youth ministry was seen as a crying need. I think most of us already were aware of this, but we get a better overall reading of parish attitudes. We will be covering the many other areas of parish life in upcoming PPC meetings. As you know, the PPC is committed to the spiritual growth of the parish...concerning a new Director of Religious Education, we are still looking for the perfect fit for our parish and our needs. I think it is important to pursue quality and effectiveness, not just any religious education program. We try to upgrade and grow. Our monthly program was a little disappointing last Sunday due to the absentee families. Thanks to all who did attend. The hope was that GOF will make a parent s part of the religious education of their children easier. As families and as a parish we both have hopes for our children that they have strong values, the ability to make good moral choices and avoid choices that will harm them; the ability to cope with and counteract life s negative influences, a life of meaning and purpose and a deep realization that God loves them and is ready to be their companion through all that life will bring. They need a Christian, Catholic viewpoint toward life and the world. I hope we as a parish make them feel a part of our community and make opportunities for them to take an active part at Mass: Greeter, Reader, Usher, Server, etc. GOF is meant to help with the experience of parish community in the opening meal, the opening exercise and prayer together. This is my chosen Son; listen to him Martin Luther King, Jr., in one of his great speeches, said, I have been to the mountaintop. There, with God s help, he could see what most people could not how America might become a nation where justice was available to all. Peter, James and John are on a mountaintop where, with God s help, they see with blinding clarity just who Jesus really is. Later these three men will see him at his low point, in the agony in the garden on Holy Thursday; but today they get a glimpse of what he will be like on Easter Sunday. Years later, Peter will write to his fellow Christians: We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we hade known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father.who said, This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased. We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain (2 Peter 1:16-18). Jesus gave his close friends a glimpse of his glory to help them through the hard times he knew were ahead for them He still does this sometimes for us. Many of us have known peak moments when God seemed very real and close, and the spiritual world felt as real as the world of sight and sound and touch. It may be a Mass when praying comes easily, when everything seems to fit. Or it may come in moments of quiet, when we re alone without being lonely. A sunset of a flower or a deserted beach can bring on those special times when we feel in touch with ourselves and with God. These special moments are a blessing, but they re out of the ordinary. Most of the time we have to plod along without visions, without peak experiences, without even warm feelings. That s why following Christ is different from being in a parade. Palm Sunday was a one-shot spectacular and so was the vision on the mountain. Most of the time we are like the apostles when they came back to earth; we look around and see nothing out of the ordinary. Only Jesus is there, beckoning us to follow him on rainy days as well as sunny ones. It s wonderful when we meet him on the mountaintop, but most of the action is down here in the valley. The US House of Representatives recently voted to NOT provide medical attention to babies living outside the womb following an attempted abortion. We should ask ourselves, Who will they decide next is undeserving of medical attention?

4 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By now, many may have failed in Lenten discipline to some measure or another: the daily doughnut is simply too alluring, or a furtive puff on a cigarette irresistible. There is meaning even in the failure, though, a kind of reminder that we cannot save ourselves. Part of the power of Lent is that we do it together, and although individuals decide on different ways to keep it, it is fundamentally the same journey. We fall, we get up, we keep moving. The desire to give something up for Lent is an age old impulse in the Christian heart. We get better at it over the years, and move more deeply into the meaning and message of acts of sacrifice; so there is no shame in stumbling, as long as we are not discouraged by the failure and give up. We are clearing space in our lives, after all, and some of the things we desire to give up are worth rooting out completely anyway. What do we do with the space we have cleared out by our sacrifice? The Lenten question of giving up is balanced by the Easter question of our response to Christ s embrace of us in love: What are you taking on for Easter? Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. STAND FIRM IN THE LORD It is not hard to imagine, in this age of wars, evil groups bent on the destruction of humanity, and political follies, that the words of Saint Paul were so accurate, even for his time. It seems that the world never changes. Paul says, Many... conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is their destruction... Their minds are occupied with earthly things (Philippians 3:18, 19). The result is the destruction of innocent people and of the Earth itself. But Paul says to the Philippians, our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ (3:20). He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body (3:21). Note that he says body rather than bodies. He is talking about the whole community of believers, who, following the example of Jesus and of Paul, will come into the glory of God. So stand firm in the Lord (4:1). Copyright J. S.
