1 are Friday 16 November 2018 Dear Parents and Friends Over the weekend and on Monday at school we commemorated the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War One. One hundred years ago, on 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. With their armies retreating and close to collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, bringing to an end the First World War. In the four years of the war more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas, and more than 60,000 of them had died. The social effects of these losses cast a long shadow over the post war decades. It was fitting, then, given the significant of Remembrance Day commemorations this year, that our students participated in workshops last term to create poppies that features in a travelling art installation for the 100 year anniversary. Our school contributed over 1000 poppies to the exhibition, which is a significant reminder of the many casualties of wars. CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE As a state, we re great at many things. However, when it comes to recycling, Queensland can do a lot better. In fact, we have one of the lowest recycling rates in Australia, at around 44%. Each year, approximately 3 billion beverage containers are generated in our state alone and are the second most littered item. So to help us all improve our recycling efforts and keep our beautiful environment litter-free, Queensland s Containers for Change scheme lets people get a 10 cent refund for each eligible container returned to a container refund point. Containers for Change provides an exciting opportunity for schools, community groups and charities to benefit from the scheme.
2 Registering with Containers for Change so that anyone can choose to donate to you when they return their containers to a refund point Collecting eligible containers as a group and returning them at a container refund point for 10 cents per container Becoming a donation point and encouraging community members to donate their containers to your organisation We have now registered to become a collection point. Funds raised from this initiative will be used to purchase resources to support our School Sustainability Project which will be implemented next year. All families who are willing to do donate containers to our school are welcome to bring these in and place them in one of the dedicated bins which will be placed in key locations across our school over the coming weeks. Alternately, they can be dropped in to the office. Parents can also donate at any of the dedicated donation points around Mackay, by simply attaching a label to your donation with our collection number listed: Below is a great graphic to illustrate what types of containers can be exchanged as part of the program. We thank you for your support! Bianca Hodges Principal

GOSPEL REFLECTION The most important line from this Sunday s gospel comes at the end, when Jesus tells us, But as for the day or the hour, nobody knows it, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son; no one but the Father. Jesus says that nobody knows the hour, the day or time; but neither does he say anything about the month or the year! Then all the incorrect predications begin again and we are back where we started. Our time here is free gift given to us by God. Nothing we have done or achieved has earned us our existence, and there is nothing we can do to guarantee our number of days. But it is not as cold and stark as it sounds. We are part of the Paschal Mystery; the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Through the Pascal Mystery, the continual cycle of life, death and new life continues; we share in this and we are part of this. This is what we remember and celebrate at every Eucharist when we pray; We proclaim your death, O Lord and profess your resurrection until you come again. Since our time here is limited, we are called to make the most it, enjoy our relationships with others and grow in our communion with God. My life is God s gift to me; how I live my life is my gift to God and others. How am I living my ordinary daily life? Peace and best wishes, Anne Marshall TUCKSHOP NEWS Wednesday 13 th November Thursday 14 th November Friday 15 th November NOT REQUIRED Thelma Carroll Anna Deguara and Stephanie Ferris HOMEBAKE ROSTER Chocolate Slice NOT REQUIRED Pikelets Thanks Jessica Jackson-Gee TERM 4 SCHOOL FEES NEEDED.
