Come and find out what the Church s teachings really are at our next parish Coffee Talk after the Mass on Sunday, September 22 in the Parish Life Center on Grove Street. Presenter Mary Bertani has worked in pastoral ministry for 25 years in the areas of adult faith formation, spiritual direction and social justice. She is presently the coordinator of the JustFaith ministries at St. Peter s Church in River Edge. (See page 4 of this bulletin.) INTERESTED IN BECOMING A CATHOLIC? Come to a special meeting SEPTEMBER 15 or 22 Any adult or teenager interested in learning about becoming a member of the Catholic Church (or who has been baptized and wants to receive First Holy Communion and Confirmation) is invited to attend a brief inquiry session from 11:30 am-12:30 pm on Sunday, September 15 or Sunday, September 22. The meeting will be held at the Rectory/Parish Office at 105 Harrison Street across from the church. NO REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Attendees will meet Father Andrew and the RCIA staff, and can ask any questions they may have. There is no obligation and no commitment. 3 TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, SEPTEMBER 8, 2013 Our parish has a new Director of Religious Education. Jorge (George) Montalvo, an ordained Permanent Deacon of the Archdiocese, will be supervising our Religious Education programs for the religious instruction of our public school students, filling a vacancy we have had since early June. Arlene Kennedy will continue to run our sacramental programs. Deacon Montalvo, who lives in Union, has previously served eleven years in full-time parish work at St. Francis in Lodi and at St. Mary of the Assumption in Elizabeth. He is also pursuing a Doctorate in Ministry at Drew University and is an Adjunct Professor at the College of St. Elizabeth, where he has been teaching a course he also planned, Lay Ministry: Spirituality and Practice. Since Deacons also assist and preach at Baptisms and weddings, and lead prayer services at wakes and burials, Deacon George will be of service to the parish in many ways. He also has a very good knowledge of computer technology and, as a native of El Salvador, is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese. (By the way, our religious education program is always looking to add more volunteers. Please think about helping out in this crucial and very satisfying work.) FROM THE PASTOR S DESK We also have a new person to replace Heath Winborn, who has served the parish so capably, but has relocated to Chicago. Our new Facilities Director will be Thomas Meli, a resident of Hasbrouck Heights. Tom was a vice-president for the A&S Department stores, serving as their regional operations manager. He has extensive experience in managing properties and buildings, as well as a very good background in financial matters. He has also been blessed with a very pleasant and approachable personality. If you missed the farewell article on Heath Winborn in last week s bulletin, it is still available at our website. The people of Saint Joseph Parish owe him a great deal of thanks, not only for all of his astute work at modernizing our business systems, but also for his ways of making so many things here run so smoothly. His new employer will surely feel fortunate to have someone of his talents and dependable work habits. Bishop John Flesey, the Episcopal Vicar for Bergen County, will be here to offer the 12:30 Mass on Sunday, September 29. This Mass, at which I will be installed as pastor of Saint Joseph Parish, will have added symbolic presentations to highlight the interdependent responsibilities of parishioners and pastor. Monsignor David Hubba 3 WELCOME DEACON GEORGE! Saint Joseph Parish extends a warm welcome to our new Director of Religious Education, Deacon George Montalvo. Deacon George was born in San Salvador, El Salvador. He came to the United States when he was eighteen and settled in Kearny, NJ. He married his high school sweetheart, Lydia, and together they have a 22 year old son, Salvador. They currently reside in Union, NJ. Deacon George holds a Masters Degree in Theology from Seton Hall University. He began his career as Pastoral Associate at St. Francis de Sales Parish in Lodi where he worked for nine years in religious education, liturgy, and with the youth of the parish. He was ordained a Permanent Deacon three years ago. He most recently served as Pastoral Associate and Director of Religious Education at St. Mary of the Assumption in Elizabeth. Deacon George is looking forward to meeting the families in our Religious Education program and to getting to know the parishioners of Saint Joseph! 4 SHAWL MINISTRY MEETING SEPTEMBER 10 The Saint Joseph Shawl Ministry will meet this Tuesday, September 10 from 2-4pm in the Parish Life Center on Grove Street. Books, videos, speakers, retreats, on-site experiences, as well as respectful group dialogue, reflection and prayer will be used. The 12-week program will take place on Mondays at the Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River beginning on September 9 and on Fridays at Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus beginning on September 6. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP TERMINALLY ILL AND THEIR FAMILIES Hospice Care of Hackensack is offering a training program for prospective hospice volunteers. Volunteers serve in many ways: they provide support for both the patient and family, listen to concerns, provide respite time for the caregiver, and run errands. Anyone with talents, such as knitting or crocheting, or has a licensed pet for pet therapy is needed as well. All ages, male and female, are encouraged to enroll. 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint Luke 14: It is not always easy to follow Jesus. In today s Gospel, Jesus tells us that we must love God more than we love ourselves or our possessions. This means that we have to be willing to give up something we truly care about and find time to pray to him everyday. We need to take a break from our computers, cell phones, ipads, ipods, and television so that we can spend a few minutes every day with Jesus. Jesus tells us that we need to love God more than anyone else. We show God that we love him by sharing what we have with people who are less fortunate. If you have a candy bar, share it with your sister or brother. When you go back to school this week and you have two pencils and two notebooks, share them with a fellow student who forgot his or her supplies. It is good to love your family, have good friends, and enjoy the gifts that God has given to you. Just remember to love God first and find time for him every day. MISSION OF THE WEEK Say this prayer: Lord, help me to be ready to go back to school. Thank you for my family, my friends and for all the things that God has given me. Help me to be a good student this year. Amen. Jesus wants us to share our things with others. 6
