Can we just as easily answer, Here I am, Lord, when we go home, when a neighbor needs our help, when a fellow parishioner asks us to join a committee, or when a letter asks for our financial help? These are often exactly the places where Jesus calls us to be. 3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Although three of the four Gospels (Mt, Mk and Lk) relate the mysterious occurrence of the Transfiguration, none names its location. Some scripture scholars identify it as likely being 9,230 foot Mount Hermon, the highest mountain in all the Levant (in what today is Lebanon), although more commentators favor Mount Tabor, an isolated eminence of 1,843 feet offering dramatic views of the plain of Esdraelon, which has the strong backing of a tradition that can be traced back to the fourth century A.D. The Franciscans of the Protectorate of the Holy Land have built an impressive church there over the ruins of an earlier one that dates to the sixth century. Jesus would have been able to see both mountains from the hills above Nazareth, where he grew up. Either could have impressed itself on his mind in his boyhood gazes, and either would have been a destination of reasonable distance for him and his apostle companions to reach on a pilgrimage. The theological meaning of this remarkable incident is to present Jesus as the summation of Israel s great inheritance, often described in its totality as the Law and the Prophets. God gave Moses the great gift of the Law on another mountain, Sinai. And both he and Elijah represent the pinnacle of the prophetic tradition as courageous and effective witnesses on the Lord s behalf, perhaps even more by their actions than by their words. For the Gospel writers, Jesus stands not just as their SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT ~ MARCH 1, 2015 (continued above) equal, but as the one who has at last completely fulfilled God s promises to his people. St. John Chrysostom (John of the Mouth of Gold ), among the greatest of the early Church s preachers, has something interesting to say about the stunning whiteness of Jesus s clothing, as he reflects not only on the Transfiguration s description of it as far surpassing what any bleaching treatment could produce, but also on the garment of the risen Christ that Mt 28, 3 describes as white as snow. How did he shine? Tell me. Exceedingly. And how do you express this? He shone as the sun. As the sun, you say? Yes. Why the sun? Because I do not know any other luminary more brilliant. And he was white, you say, as snow? Why as snow? Because I do not know any other substance which is whiter. But he did not strictly speaking shine merely as the sun shines daily. This is proved by what follows: the disciples fell to the ground. If he had shone as the sun daily shines the disciples would not have fallen, for they saw the sun every day, and did not fall. But inasmuch as he shone more brilliantly than the sun or snow, they, being unable to bear the splendor, fell to the earth. Before long, the extraordinary experience of the Transfiguration would bolster the apostles as they confronted the shock of Jesus s crucifixion. Msgr. David Hubba OUR LENTEN PARISH MISSION MARCH 16 Saint Joseph: Family Man for Jesus and Mary MARCH 17 Saint Joseph: Family Man for the Universal Church Our annual Lenten Parish Mission will bring our parish s patron saint to the forefront as we learn from him how to make Jesus the focus of both our family life and our lives as Catholic Christians. During the Mission we will also explore the role Joseph plays in the goals of the World Meeting of Families that will be held in Philadelphia in September. The Mission will take place in the Upper Church on Monday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 17, both at 7:30 pm. Our speaker will be Father John Gordon, popular conference speaker and retreat director. Fr. Gordon will also speak at all Masses on the weekend of March Join us for two rewarding evenings of reflection. PETER S PENCE COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND MARCH 7-8 Next week our diocese will take up the Peter s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The Holy Father has said that There is much that we can do to benefit the poor, the needy and those who suffer, and to favor justice, promote reconciliation and build peace. The proceeds allow the Pope to benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering. CORNERSTONE Please keep the women who will be attending the March 6-7 Women s Cornerstone Retreat in your prayers. Thank you and God bless you all! SHAWL MINISTRY MEETING MARCH 10 Saint Joseph s Shawl Ministry will meet on Tuesday, March 10 from 2:00-4:00 pm in the Parish Life Center on Grove Street. All knitters and crocheters are welcome to join us in making shawls or bring your current yarn project and spend a relaxing afternoon with us. Our ministry has shawls available for those experiencing illness, confinement, bereavement, or other situation. After the success of our AED (defibrillator) training, Saint Joseph Parish is looking into providing CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) training for anyone who might be interested. Would you like to take a CPR course? The classes will take place on two evenings (2-3 hours each evening). There will be a cost between $30 and $50 and we will need to have at least fifteen people in the class, but our Facilities Director Tom Meli is able to arrange for an instructor if enough people are interested. 5 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT ~ MARCH 1, 2015 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE UNBORN MARCH 22 Queen of Peace Parish and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish invite you to join with the members of the Knights of Columbus, the Order of Malta and the Respect Life Ministry to commemorate the day. Mass will take place at Queen of Peace Church, 10 Franklin Place, North Arlington, NJ, on Sunday, March 22 at 12 noon followed by a procession from the Church north on Ridge Road to Holy Cross Cemetery (approx. 4 blocks). The Rosary will be recited and the Blessed Sacrament will be carried in procession. The group will enter through the main gate (Ridge Road) and proceed to the new Mausoleum Chapel. After Benediction there, the congregation will proceed to Rachael s monument (Monument to the Unborn). Their testimonies, in addition to responses from a 2013 global survey, helped focus the dialogue on how the Church can best support marriage and family life in the modern age. In preparation for the Ordinary Synod on the Family in October 2015, Pope Francis has indicated he would like to continue the dialogue and have further feedback from Catholics on the outcomes of the 2014 Extraordinary Synod and how the Church can pastorally respond to the current needs and concerns of married couples and the family. ANDREW s MARCH 14 Jason Evert, who has spoken on six continents to more than one million people, will speak on The Virtue of Chastity to parents and the wider community on Thursday, March 5, at 7:00 pm at Don Bosco Prep, DeSales Hall Auditorium, 492 N. The author of more than ten books, including How to Find Your Soulmate without Losing Your Soul and Theology of the Body for Teens, Jason earned a master s degree in Theology, and undergraduate degrees in Counseling and Theology, with a minor in Philosophy at Franciscan University of Steubenville.
