CHURCH OF ST. THOMAS MORE GLENDALE, AZ JULY 3, 2016 Deacon s Corner As I begin my journey as the new deacon at St. Thomas More, I find myself looking for ways to be present to the community.

My wife Beth and I now join Deacon Richard Kijewski and his wife Nancy. Since the title is Deacon s Corner, articles will be featured by both Deacon Richard and myself.

They were to be an advance team of sorts, to announce that Jesus of Nazareth is on his way. He told them not to take anything with them; to be totally dependent on others.

He tells them what to say, how to behave, what to expect, and why their mission was so important.

1 CHURCH OF ST. THOMAS MORE GLENDALE, AZ JULY 3, 2016 Deacon s Corner As I begin my journey as the new deacon at St. Thomas More, I find myself looking for ways to be present to the community. That being said, as a former writer and editor of a Carmelite magazine, writing a column in the parish bulletin seems a good way to connect with parishioners. My wife Beth and I now join Deacon Richard Kijewski and his wife Nancy. Since the title is Deacon s Corner, articles will be featured by both Deacon Richard and myself. In today s gospel Luke shows us a way to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our Lord calls 70 with a specific mission. They were to be an advance team of sorts, to announce that Jesus of Nazareth is on his way. He told them not to take anything with them; to be totally dependent on others. When you enter a house, said Jesus, first say, Peace to this house. Our Lord continued his instructions by offering them a roadmap for their work. He tells them what to say, how to behave, what to expect, and why their mission was so important. With every syllable, Jesus teaches them that ours is a gracious faith, offered freely, without coercion, seasoned with love. A second instruction is straightforward in meaning: accept the gifts given you with gratitude. Stretch that just a bit and another message comes into focus. Rather than beginning a conversation by telling our story, listen with love as others share their life with you. Jesus modeled this approach, he listened first, and heard souls longing for a more meaningful life. Our mission from God offers the gift of peace and an open, listening heart. Cure the sick is the third of our missional instructions. The great need in every life is not first a cure for what ails us. But rather, what we need most is healing of memories, restoration of relationships, forgiveness from sin, and transformation of life. Those gifts all have their genesis in the healing offered us in Jesus Christ. The faith we believe, the Lord we follow calls us to be on mission with him in this world so broken by misunderstanding and fractured by sin. Ours is a gracious faith that shows more than tells, gives more than takes, and loves more than demands. This mission from God finds its life in our Lord Jesus Christ, showing us the way of love is the way of life. Be on that mission with Jesus Christ and join hands with others who share this gracious, giving faith. Are you looking for a way to share your faith, time and talents with others? The Children s Faith Formation department needs you!! Volunteers are needed as Faith Formation (weekly teachers), sacramental preparation, and Children s Liturgy of the Word catechists. You are not alone, catechists work in teams. You do not need to have children in the program to participate. Training, resources, and support is provided. The programs begin in September and we need to organize the catechists and form teams now. The following Faith Formation sessions and grades needs catechists: Session A Monday 4:45-6:00pm - Second, third and fifth grade. Session B Monday 6:30-7:45pm Third, fourth and fifth grade Session C Tuesday, 4:45-6:00pm Second and third grade Session D Tuesday, 6;30-7;45pm First and second grade Contact Ann or Maria in the Parish Office for more information.

And children know just as well the loving mother who serves a portion of last night s dessert with a glass of cold milk in the morning! They know her enfolding arms that makes everything all right.

Violence and evil are fierce, brokenness and alienation are real; consolation and security are the fondest hope.

Sound familiar? Into the midst of wolves, as lambs without purse, bag or sandals, Jesus sends his disciples. Their only provision is a proclamation: The kingdom of God has come near you.

Children know the wolf in whose woods Hansel and Gretel are lost, the place Where the Wild Things Are. And children know just as well the loving mother who serves a portion of last night s dessert with a glass of cold milk in the morning! They know her enfolding arms that makes everything all right. Even though children grow and their experience is widened, we are still lambs. The child s perspective has become for us the deepened reality of where the wolf will meet the lamb. Violence and evil are fierce, brokenness and alienation are real; consolation and security are the fondest hope. Isaiah paints a picture of the lambs returning to Jerusalem that has been destroyed the wolf has been at work. The spreading of hatred and division, anxiety and fear have all led to death. Sound familiar? Into the midst of wolves, as lambs without purse, bag or sandals, Jesus sends his disciples. Their only provision is a proclamation: The kingdom of God has come near you. Their response is priceless: The kingdom you gave us to proclaim is more powerful than ever we knew! So the wolves gather. The wild things prowl around a cross. Above them is a Lamb sacrificed. In this Lamb and cross the very presence of the peaceable kingdom is come. In this Lamb is the final confrontation with violence and evil, brokenness and alienation. In this Lamb is the glory and promise baked into bread and poured out wine. This kingdom of God, this promise of peace, this place of healing, is this table and this food, to change our lives and take off grandmother s clothes hiding the wolf.
