Sometimes we go to the mountains to feel exaltation. Other times, we just want to be alone to gain perspective. We may even want a shouting match with God, out of earshot of any witnesses. Elijah escaped the towns where Queen Jezebel s army was seeking to assassinate him, fleeing to the wilderness. Discouraged by the outcome of his prophetic mission, he didn t care if he simply died out there. An angel of the Lord directed him to take heart: God was waiting for him on Mt. Horeb, also known as Sinai. So Elijah trooped uphill for another sacred encounter. The usual epiphanies came by: driving wind, earthquake, fire. Biblically speaking, these three natural events were typically read as God s calling card. But a trained seer like Elijah wasn t fooled by any of them. He was waiting for a different kind of encounter, which he found in the tiny whispering sound. That was the voice of God the weary prophet was prepared to engage. I have constant anguish in my heart...for the sake of my own people. Not all spiritual experiences are the mountaintop variety. Like Elijah s despair in the wilderness, the apostle Paul also felt despondent at times. He knew many disappointments in his mission: arrests and beatings, even being stoned and left for dead. But the thing that caused him constant anguish was the realization that his own Jewish community wasn t going to sign onto the revelation of Jesus wholesale, as he once imagined they would, given the right persuasion. Paul experienced the disillusionment that every idealist suffers, as he or she realizes the world will not be moved simply by the truth of a passionate conviction. Many of us know what that level of discouragement is like. Our life s work, the cause to which we re most closely devoted, or the truth that seems so obvious to us, is not valued or even accepted by everyone. How do we keep from hopelessness, or outrage? Sometimes we need signs from heaven that the vision we hold is not in vain. After dismissing the crowds, Jesus went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. I ve never been the athletic sort, so my hikes to the top of real mountains have been rare. But once I did attempt to climb a 10,000 foot peak in the Sierras, only to turn back after a long struggle when I encountered a sheet of ice across the path that plunged down into an abyss. That failed ascent nagged at me. I felt I could have made it all the way but for that unavoidable obstacle. So two years later, I tried again, and did it. I d been so close the first time and hadn t even dreamed my goal was a few hours away. Some ascents you make with companions in tow, and others you have to do yourself. In the gospels, Jesus frequently goes off to pray alone. Those solitary ascents gave Him the fortitude He needed for the work ahead. If Peter had such training in stamina and perseverance, perhaps he wouldn t have lost his nerve as quickly as he did in the hours when he was called upon to get out of the boat and act. Prayer is a form of resistance training, a way to strengthen our spirits for all the future may hold.

3 Page Three August 13, 2017 My dear Parishioners, I am inspired to share with you more from the current Pastoral Letter of our Archbishop as source of inspiration for keeping the faith in a very secular world that we live in. As I said in my previous article last weekend, I again encourage you to please read these excerpts from the pastoral letter of Archbishop Gomez to the faithful of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. For greater things we were born! Each of us has been made for love and for great and beautiful things. There is no soul that God does not long to touch with this message of his love! And he wants to touch those souls through us. So let us make our lives something beautiful that we can offer to God. Let us do everything, even the littlest duties of our days, out of love for him and for the love of our brothers and sisters. (Letter 131, in In Love s Safekeeping: The Letters and Spiritual Writings of Mother Maria Luisa Josefa of the Most Blessed Sacrament, O.C.D.,) My dear brothers and sisters, that is still it! That is still the point of everything, the essential program for living our Christian lives in a secular society. God made us for greater things! He made us to be saints, to be holy men and women living as children of God in the image of Jesus Christ. #7 This is the reason for this letter. I am convinced that in this moment, it is urgent for us to rediscover these greater things for which we are born. In a society where the reality of God and the meaning of the person are now in question, we need to reclaim and re-propose the vision of the human person that we find at the heart of the Gospel. Jesus Christ alone knows who we are and he is the one Teacher of life. He alone shows us the way to live in order to lead a truly human life. As it says in the Gospel, Jesus did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well. I write to share my hope with you. I encourage you to read these pages slowly and prayerfully. A little at a time. That is the spirit in which I have tried to write, based on my prayer and my reflections on the wisdom of the saints and the rich treasury that we have in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the teachings of our recent popes. What I offer here is simply a series of reflections on what Our Lord s Incarnation reveals to us about our human nature, about the great dignity and possibilities of our lives. About God s desire for our happiness. God s loving design applies to all of us, no matter what your state in life or your position in the Church. These are the greater things, the higher gifts that God intends for you, for me, and for every person! I pray that this letter might in some small way help all of us to find God, to know and love him more, and to spread his love to every corner of the earth. So let us try our best to get hold of the complete version of this pastoral letter of Archbishop Gomez from the Archdiocesan Website. Peace, Fr. Riz

6 Page Six St. Peter Claver Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. ~ Psalm 85:12 A rabbi was asked why God sends trials and troubles into human lives. Because God gets lonely for his people was the reply. There is some resonance with this wisdom in today s Gospel, as Jesus makes his disciples get into a boat without him and goes off alone while they venture into stormy waters. Of course, neither Jews nor Christians believe that the Almighty plays this sort of whimsical game with them, but there is some truth in the statement that we don t turn to God for saving help until we re in a bind. Peter s role today, as it is throughout the New Testament, is to be a sign or to represent each member of the church and the whole church. Our story is the tale told about Peter s faith today. What can bolster our faith is that even when Christ calls us to face bravely the tempests of life, if we are walking through them with our eyes fixed on him in faith, we have nothing to fear. Even when we falter or sink, simply crying Lord, save me! is enough to help us know the steady grasp of God s hand. Then, sheltered inside the walls of faith, the storms we endure lose their power over us. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Holy Day of Obligation. 8 Page Eight St. Peter Claver Announcing the 100th Anniversary 2017 Public Square Rosary Crusade October 14, (noon) At this crucial historical moment - the Fatima Centennial ( ) - God is more offended than ever by the sins of His people. Our Lady s request to stop offending God has been ignored. This hundredth anniversary is the perfect opportunity to heed her request, and God will hear us if we pray through the intercession of His Blessed Mother. That is why we are doing the 2017 Public Square Rosary Crusade. Please see future bulletins for more details as we approach the October 14 th date. Liturgical Publications Inc (LPi), our Bulletin publisher, will have Nik Alexander and Joe Bisenius, our Bulletin representatives, visiting our Church this week to service our Bulletin. We would like to thank our present advertisers for renewing their ad and thereby continuing their support of our Church. For those interested in placing a new ad, this is your opportunity. To obtain information about advertising for the new publication year, please contact Nik Alexander directly at (303) Keep in mind; our advertising sponsors make the Bulletin possible. An everyday steward is called to be gracious. I read once that to be a gracious person meant to walk softly, speak with intent, and to leave those you have met feeling that their lives were better that day because they encountered you. What a way to live! But alas, living like that each and every day is so very hard. I hate to think that sometimes people I have encountered are happy to see me go, but I know that it is true. As Christians we are graced people, but on some days, that grace can seem pretty hidden. If you are looking for an example of gracious living look no further than Our Lady. She answered the call regardless of the cost and she lived her life with a great dignity in the face of horrible trials. She was a gracious host to the Incarnation in her womb and she continues to invite us to get to know her Son better. She certainly embodies the definition of gracious living above. We are called to always be ready and open to the call of her Son. He will bring us to those in need, seeking light in a world of darkness. Our hope must be then that after our encounter with another, they will feel enriched by our presence. Of course, we will know, like Our Lady knew before us, that it wasn't about us at all. It was about the Jesus in us meeting the Jesus in them. ~Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS Join Us in a Celebration of the Catholic Mass Honoring ALL First Responders All Law Enforcement, Firefighters, DOT, and Paramedics, along with families and friends, are invited (Class-A uniforms encouraged) Sunday, August 27 th, 2017 at 10am Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels 555 W. LIVE THE LITURGY - Peter saw Jesus walking on the water and began to walk toward Him. He became frightened at how strong the wind was and began to sink. He took his focus off of Jesus and allowed his fears to get the best of him. Fear often gets the best of us and cripples us. We sink. Many of our actions and thoughts are motivated by fear. Think of how many opportunities you have missed because of fear. Jesus tells us to trust and to meet each day with faith and confidence. God is with us. We have nothing to fear.
