5 Sunday, May 10, Mother s Day Epworth Children s Home has been a ministry of our church for more than 119 years. The Home is not an apportioned item by the SC Conference, which means it receives no funding from the conference other than our offerings. Epworth relies heavily on the donations received from our upcoming Mother s Day Offering to provide direct care for the children. When children arrive at Epworth, they have experienced a great deal of loss. For Epworth, it isn t enough to answer God s call to care for the least of these by simply providing room and board. No, the staff and programs go above and beyond. Children are offered tutoring to get them caught up academically. Counseling is provided to help them heal from the trauma, abuse, neglect, or loss they have experienced. Quality medical care is rendered on their campus, knowing that many of the children have never seen a doctor or dentist. Also offered is spiritual formation and guidance. Epworth has an appointed pastor, just as we do here. She leads worship each Sunday, and the children also participate in Sunday school. They have the opportunity to participate in Bible studies, Salkehatchie, Asbury Hills, Revolution, and other conference-wide activities. We all know that true healing begins with Christ. Epworth knows this, and ensures the children are surrounded by loving, Christian adults so they can break the cycle of abuse, neglect, and shame and replace it with a life of self-respect, responsibility, and productivity. Our church has a large part in making all this possible for the children of Epworth. These children come from communities in South Carolina just like ours. They are our neighbors and we are called to provide for them. Please give generously and stand with Epworth as they work to break the cycle. Joel and Katie Nordstrom Welcome Joel and Katie to Main Street. They joined on March 29, 2015 and they come by transfer from another denomination, Stephen, Brandi and Noah Davis Welcome Davis Family to Main Street! They joined on March 29, Stephen by certificate of transfer and Brandi by transfer from another denomination. 5

Carol Chastain and family STAT FACTS by Lee Robirds, Congregational Nurse New ancient herb found to guarantee weight loss. Eat these five foods and you ll never have to worry about dementia. You ve heard and read the sensational headlines, but what can you really believe? The Dr. Oz Show and The Doctors both have over 2 million viewers per show! What a wonderful way to get medical information to the public. The British Medical Journal actually studied the accuracy of their content, and found that Dr. Oz s show was correct only half the time, with The Doctors doing a little bit better. Dr. Oz was brought before the US Senate last June, and was publicly scolded for saying that the green coffee bean was a miracle cure that could melt fat, something that has not been duplicated by reputable scientific studies. Other similar claims by both shows have no scientific backing, or if they do present a study which suggests something might work, the study may have been conducted by the company selling the drug/food/supplement/etc. Interestingly, the public was never given that part of the story. What is the consumer to do? How do you know what you re hearing is correct? There are many good websites available to the public which have no conflict of interest, two of which are: and Both sites offer information that is geared to the general public, so don t feel you have to speak doctor-ese to be able to understand the information. Additionally, ask your primary care provider for his/her opinion of something you heard on TV or read in the latest magazine article. But please, please don t get your information from Wikipedia. As P.T. Barnum is (falsely!) quoted as saying, There s a sucker born every minute. Unfortunately, that s the viewpoint of current TV medical personalities, too. 7
