1 Worshipping Serving Building Welcoming FOLLOWING CHRIST FROM CITY CENTER Letter from the Pastor One hundred years ago, the congregation of Main Street Methodist Episcopal Church, South was meeting in the Magnolia School. We gathered here for 18 months for both Sunday School and worship services while a new Gothic sanctuary was under construction. The need for this facility was great; after only 17 years, the church had outgrown its second building built in The Great War made construction slow and materials difficult to acquire. We were anxious to leave behind Magnolia School and have our own church again. (Mays, p.108) On November 11, 1918, the new Main Street pastor, Rev. B. Rhett Turnipseed, declared at a meeting that we would meet in our new church that next Sunday. There was still work to be done. The landscaping had not even started, but we were ready to forge ahead into the new future that God was preparing for us. (Many thanks to the book The History of Main Street United Methodist Church, Greenwood, South Carolina by Rev. Harry R. Mays for providing this information.) On November 11, 2018, we will gather once again to celebrate the ways in which God has been faithful through us. We will sing the same old, great hymns they sang. We will once more join in worship and praise in this space designed for God s glory. But, also, be prepared for the God who was at work in our midst 100 years ago is alive and at work among us today. Grace and Peace, James 4 5 October 2018 Volume VIII Issue 10

7 7 MORE MAIN STREET MISSION OPPORTUNITIES Kairos is Coming! The Kairos Team serving at Leath will be headquartered at our church from October to hold a Kairos Weekend retreat with 42 inmates at Leath. You will see much activity in the kitchen and around the church as Kairos volunteers prepare meals and help in other ways. Here s how you can join in on this effort in transforming lives. Prayers are vital. Prayer wheels displaying a 72-hour prayer vigil show participants they are being prayed for throughout the weekend. You may choose a time by signing up for a 30-minute spot or simply begin now to pray as the Holy Spirit leads you. To sign up for the Prayer Vigil online, access this website: GetComm.phtml Homemade cookies become tangible proof of God s love and remind inmates that people who do not even know them care about them. A cookie team inside the prison packages small bags of assorted cookies along with a scripture to be distributed to over 800 inmates on each of the four days. Store bought cookies are also deeply appreciated. A cookie bake in the church kitchen will be held between 5:30-7:30 pm on October 23 for those who would like to bake with a team. Or simply drop off your cookies by that date. Monetary contributions of any size are welcome and needed since the cost of a Kairos weekend is funded solely by donations. To make a tax-deductible contribution, please make your check out to Kairos of SC and designate Leath on the memo line. You may drop it off at the church office, put it into the collection plate, or give it to one of the Kairos volunteers from Main Street--Robbie Kohli or Kit Adkins. Please welcome these volunteers and pray that lives will be won for Christ. Heartfelt thanks go to you for your prayers, cookies, donations, and other acts of loving service. Gray Stallworth Engagement Coordinator Are you active and effective in sharing with others your faith, your resources, and your love? Philemon 1:6 I am really excited to be here at Main Street United Methodist Church. As you can imagine, in my first few weeks, I have read about and asked a lot about the church. I just love the very encouraging vision of the church. As a new person, let me sum up what I understand as the Vision. We are called to be disciples of Jesus Christ by a) connecting to God through our faithful worship, b) connecting to others by serving those in need with compassion and love, c) making sure we are inviting and building bridges in the center of our wonderful city and d) working hard at being welcoming as we open our doors for others to hear God s story. I read recently about what people want from their church. There was a list of 4 observations. One of the suggestions made by Phil Maynard was that people want to be challenged to take the next steps in their spiritual journey. I can think of several ways you can do that. Join a Sunday School class or a Sunday evening Engage class. Participate in the Men s Monthly Community Prayer Breakfast hosted by St Mark United Methodist Church on. The event is held at the Rivers Street Campus and begins at 6:30 am. Breakfast is $3. Support and participate in the 20 th Annual Community Prayer Breakfast on November 8 hosted and sponsored by the Greenwood Family YMCA. If you would like to be challenged as Maynard suggested, please let me help you find a program, ministry or study that will help you continue in your walk with Christ. In Christ, Gray
