4 BETHEL WILL BE CELEBRATING 175 YEARS! In the future, when your children ask you, 'What do these stones mean to you?' you should tell them..." Joshua 4:6-7 Our 175th church anniversary is worth planning well. It's should be a great gathering of former and current church members, staff and ministers, joyfully praising God for His blessings on our church. We need your ideas to help us as we begin thinking about our church's anniversary: ü Designate an Anniversary Committee to locate former staff and church members using a master list, online searches, and people resources. Send "save the date" notices a full year in advance. ü Develop a brief video or live dramatic presentation of our church history. ü Create a commemorative book written about our history. ü Design scrapbooks for each decade our church has existed. Display a timeline of significant church history events beside it. ü Order Anniversary souvenirs such as a personalized ornament, pen, paperweight, T-shirt, notebook, magnet, bookmark, or church cookbook. Other ideas might include: ü Black Tie Gala ü Mortgage Burning! ü Side Walk Improvement ü Uplift of Church edifice and front lawn

5 REMEMBERING THE REV. DR. ARNOLD LEWIS WILLIAMS The Beginning Arnold Lewis Williams Sr., the third child of Lorenzo and Hattie Jarona Lewis Williams was born on November 11, 1902 in Marietta, North Carolina. Dr. Williams was educated in public schools of Roberson County, NC, Kittrell College, NC, and Philadelphia City College where he studied law before answering the call to preach God s word. Lastly, he studied at Roosevelt University, Chicago, Illinois. He was converted and became a Christian at Turner Chapel AME Church in Marietta, North Carolina. He was very active as a youngster in Sunday School and other organizations. His Ministry While studying law in Philadelphia, PA in the 1920 s, Dr. Williams answered the call to preach and was admitted to the Philadelphia Annual Conference. He was ordained Deacon and Elder by the late Bishop William H. Heard. Under leadership of Pastor A. Lewis Williams, Bethel Morristown held a groundbreaking ceremony for its current sanctuary on August 12, The congregation worshipped in the Lafayette School auditorium for two and one half years until the construction of the sanctuary was completed. After numerous setbacks and financial difficulties, the present sanctuary was completed and dedicated November 8, Prior to serving in Morristown, NJ, Rev. Williams pastored churches in Bristol, PA, Wilmington, DE, Chester, PA, Wyoming, DE, Roanoke, VA, Paces, VA, Danville, VA, Eastville, VA, Raleigh, NC, Chicago, IL, Dixon, IL, Gary, IN, back to Chicago, IL, Rock Island, IL, Anderson, IN, Detroit, MI, Lansing, MI, St. Paul, MN, Des Moines, IA, back to Chicago, IL, Woodbury, NJ. He served African Methodism on many levels; Pastor, Presiding Elder in the 1st, 2nd, and 13th Episcopal Districts, and General Officer; serving as Editor of the Christian Recorder. He was the Unofficial Editor of African Methodism for many years having founded and edited the AME Report from 1936 until relinquishing its reigns to one of his sons in recent years. His publications are numerous and include the African Methodist Class Leaders Manual, How to be a Stewardess in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and many Books of Sermons. He was a member of many General Conferences and was widely known as the preacher s preacher. He was much sought after as a great revivalist. His presence at a conference on any level in African Methodism was sure to find him being called upon to bring the Word. A proud man by nature, he was humbled when he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Payne Theological Seminary, and when he had the opportunity to visit and Preach on the Mission field of West Africa. His Family Dr. Williams married Miss Nancy Elizabeth Boney in June, 1924, 3 years after meeting her at the Sunday School convention in Wallace, NC. She was his traveling partner for over 35 years and the mother of the joys of his life, fondly called, the precious nine, two of which, Arnold L. Jr. and Gwendolyn Virgie Williams Nightingale, preceded him in death. Following the death of Mrs. Nancy Boney Williams, Dr. Williams married Rev. Hazel Cooper Franklin. They were married for 33 years. Dr. Williams taught by precept and example, the importance of family. There were always great family gatherings where those who were fortunate enough draw near heard many great stories of his youth, his parents, the AME Church, and all of his pastorates. His outgoing love increased the size of the family by adding many young people in every town in which he lived. Today, all over the country there are young men and women who are happy to report, His preaching made me change my ways. His preaching caused me to come to the Lord. His preaching made me give up everything and go for broke. Even from his Chair (when he could no longer get about), Rev. A Lewis held court. He was continually leading prayer services, teaching Bible classes, writing sermons, and leading great discussions. He would instantly perk up if one of the children called or came by. He was proud of his family. The New Beginning... On Thursday evening, November 11, 1993, after a glorious day of celebrating his 91st birthday, with family and friends, Dr. Williams was called from labor to reward. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

7 October Events October 8th - Bethel Church of Morristown will celebrate its 174th Anniversary on October 8, 2017 during our morning worship service and annual luncheon. Please note that this will be the kickoff for our 175th Anniversary and our Grace and Glory Campaign in Our Big Goal is to pay off our mortgage of $180,000 by October 14, 2018! As part of our Grace and Glory Campaign, we are asking every current and former member to give $175 beginning this year, but no later than June We will not ask for an Anniversary donation next October because there will be additional giving opportunities such as; purchase a leaf, acorn or a stone on our Tree Of Life located in the rear of our sanctuary and purchase a banquet ticket. These are just a few of the events and activities planned throughout the year and details will be provided as plans unfold. We would like everyone to participate in this endeavor so we are starting early.
