St. Patrick s Shamrock Page 3 Dear Friends in Christ, Notes From Sarah It has now been over a year since I began my time with you at St. Patrick s, and it has been a year filled with abundant blessings for myself and this community. Yet what has impressed me over and over again during this tenure, is that there truly are saints walking among us in this congregation. It never ceases to amaze me how much love and support flows forth from our parishioners, ready to help at a moment s notice. So many people work diligently together to bring about the kingdom of God here on earth. As we approach the festival season of All Saints Day, I ask you to consider how you have seen saints, holy men and women, witnesses of God s grace, at work in the life of St. Patrick s. Perhaps you have witnessed the saints of the flannel team not only working to keep our campus in beautiful functioning condition, but who time and again help their neighbors with moving, with yardwork, with household repairs, with almost anything under the sun. Perhaps you have witnessed the saints of the Outreach Commission and United for Action who keep us connected locally and globally by supporting refugees in Reno, and packing backpacks for the homeless, and feeding those who are experiencing food insecurity, and conversing with new friends learning English. Perhaps you have witnessed the saints of the altar guild who not only beautify our church for Christmas and Easter, but who prepare for lakeside baptisms, and parish funerals, and numerous holy days. Perhaps you have witnessed the saints of the Good Samaritan group who time and time again offer meals to those who are sick, or in any kind of need. Or perhaps you have witnessed the saints who are younger than most packing down pine needles during campus clean up, and serving at the altar during the Eucharist, and worshipping the Divine with abounding joy. This community is filled with holy men and women, even more than I have named above. As we approach All Saints Day which we will celebrate together on November 4th, I ask you to prayerfully consider how the saints of this community have blessed your life and how you have been a blessing to them in return. For as one of my favorite hymns reminds us, the saints of God are just folk like me, and I mean to be one too. God's Peace, Sarah+ All Saints Day Sunday after All Saints' Day, November 4th, 8 and 10 am: To honor the dead on All Saints' Day, You are welcome to place small photos and/or mementos of your departed loved ones on our altar before worship begins. We invite you to also write their names in the binder provided on the credenza table in the narthex, so we may lift up their lives during our Prayers of the People. Please also come to the Columbarium after the 10am service to commemorate with a short liturgy those interred there.

St. Patrick s Shamrock Page 4 We would like to express our gratude for all the hard work done on our behalf as we celebrated Lora's life. Your words of comfort and the delighul gathering on the pao following the service really made a very difficult day feel like a celebraon. It is such a blessing to be a part of the St. Pat's community and we are grateful to all of those who helped give Lora such a lovely send off. Sincerely, Rev. Jim, John & Pamela Kelly What s the Friendliest Cafe in Incline Village? It s our own Café Conversacion in St. Pat s Library! 7 St. Patrick s Shamrock Page 7 Meditation Opportunities Does the world seem angry and unseled these days? If so... try calming it from the inside out with meditaon. Wednesdays, 5:30 to 6:30 pm, I invite you to join me in the Chapel for guided meditaons. Time-honored techniques of breathing and centering allow you to simply experience God s presence in a place of calm. This experience of stability then prepares you for the agitaon of daily life. Our varied pracces are alive with music, art, sacred texts, and beauful imagery. Come and see. Thursdays, 12:15 to 1:00 pm, consider coming to the Chapel to enjoy the beauty of an ancient pracce called Leco Divina. This method of prayer is based upon slow, contemplave reading a way to hear how sacred texts from many tradions speak to your heart today. By entering a space of silence in a small group and listening carefully, we receive new understandings from a deep source. Silence for the Soul meditaon day, Saturday, 12/15, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Take me to find serenity in the busyness of December with tradional Chrisan meditave pracces, guided and in silence. In our circles, we pracce so that we can create a moment of joy, a feeling of happiness, an experience of God s steady presence, any me of day or night. Together, we calm our world from the inside out. ~ Rev. Clare Novak, Interspiritual Minister and Counselor

St. Patrick s Shamrock Page 12 YAQUB FAMILY UPDATE: A beau ful, sunny Lake Tahoe day greeted the Yaqub family on their first visit to the lake. This is the immigrant Kurdish family that St. Patrick s and the other Episcopal Churches in the Reno area are suppor ng. The Outreach Commi8ee and other members of St. Patrick s gathered to welcome them with a picnic at Incline Beach in July. Mohammed and Aiysa have four children, three girls (two school age and a three year old) and a boy. Mohammed was busy running many mes to the lake with his son who thoroughly enjoyed it! One daughter really liked being in the water, but the other girl said she was afraid of going into it. But.a>er several hours of observing how much fun other children had in the lake she braved it and came back to our picnic site soaking wet and delighted she had experienced Lake Tahoe! The picnic table was laden with a variety of yummy food prepared by all who a8ended. As we sat together to partake of this, Mohammed and Aiysa became more comfortable visi ng with all of us and even the girls were more open an relaxed. The family spoke no English when they arrived but now have learned it and the girls, who a8end school, are quite comfortable speaking English. When the a>ernoon ended there were hugs and talk of another me together. Lenty and Cherry drove the family home to Reno where Aiysa was eager to show them her garden full of a variety of vegetables. Aiysa had brought a salad to the picnic made with cucumbers and mint from her garden. Which Cherry ran errands Aiysa prepared tea for Lenty and invited her to visit again. Truly, the Yabub family is grateful for what we have been doing to help them integrate into our culture.

St. Patrick s Shamrock Page 13 YAQUB FAMILY PICNIC AND TAYLOR'S CREEK: The Yaqub had the opportunity to visit Taylor s Creek in South Shore with our Outreach Commi8ee in September! A lovely fall day, food, and company was had by all!

St. Patrick s Shamrock Page 15 Lazy Fundraising You shop, right? Groceries. Clothes. Trips. Sundries. Online. Eating out. How would you like to turn that shopping into fund raising at no cost to you other than five minutes of your time? OK, maybe fifteen minutes. That s all it takes to get involved in our two programs that could be yielding the parish a regular stream of revenue, but most of you are not involved despite your needing to do very little but shop, which you do already. And getting connected to these programs is all that it takes to have contributions sent to St. Patrick's. No more time or effort on your part! St. Patrick s is enrolled in two different programs: * escrip This is a set and forget program. Register your credit cards one time. That s all you need to do. Then each time you use one of these cards at a participating merchant, St. Patrick s gets bucks. How cool is that? Totally safe and secure, and you don t even have to remember which merchants participate or to use a special card. You can even register your Safeway card and give St. Patrick s a boost while you re buying those groceries. * Amazon. Who doesn t shop Amazon.com? Thought so. You might be using their front door by typing amazon.com in the address field of your Web browser. Stop that!! Instead click the Shop Amazon.com link on St. Patrick s home page. Once you are on our Amazon page, you can select some of the great books featured there or just open our designated door by clicking the designated image or special links. Want it even lazier? Bookmark that special link and use that in the future. That s it!! That click leads you into the St. Patrick s special door and reaps the benefits for us. How to get started with escrip: Go to our Web site, click the Scrip Programs tab and follow the instructions. These folks having been running this program for a long time and do not use your credit-card information for any other purpose. Need help? I ll be glad to sit at the office computer with you after the 10:00 service. Still have question or need help? Call me. Karen Barney

St. Patrick s Shamrock Page 16 Some Steps to Commitment By Rev. Dr. Dave Mussatti As we move into fall, it is a time to focus on our commitment to the Lord, to the Church, and to Ourselves. 1. Commit to full closeness-clear up anything within me that stands in the way. 2. Commit to myself to my own complete development as an individual. 3. Commit to revealing myself fully in relationship, not to concealing myself. 4. Commit myself to full empowerment of people around me. 5. Commit to acting from the awareness that I am 100% the source of my reality. 6. Commit to having a good time in my close relationships. ~Dave Good Samaritans: Parish Needs Team Did you know we have a Parish Needs Team? Do you know who they help? The Good Samaritans (Parish Needs Team) is a group of dedicated parishioners or angels who help members of our congregations and others occasionally who may need extra support aid during times of illness, after surgery or a hospital stay. These parishioners help by preparing meals, paying a visit and /or giving a ride to an appointment. There are times we are not needed at all, but suddenly we may be needed for several! The Good Samaritan group could use more loving hands. If you are interested in joining this ministry, please contact Lenty Hagen at or lenty_hagen@sbcglobal.net with your name and contact information.

St. Patrick s Shamrock Page 18 KNITTERS GUILD OF INCLINE VILLAGE NEWS Do you love to knit or crochet? Come join the Knitters Guild, which meets every Wednesday From 1 3 p.m. in the church library! We wrapped up 2017 with a total of 241 donated knitted and crocheted items to a number of groups; details below. We also donated yarn to fellow knitters, the Thursday Lady Artists group that meets at Kings Beach Domus Housing as part of North Tahoe Family Resource Center. We were glad to share our bounty with a group that also creates items for those in need. The more needles and hooks, the more items that go to needy folks. There continues to be a good turnout each Wednesday. Course new ladies (and gentlemen!) are always welcome, even if your skills are rusty and you cannot attend the gatherings on a regular basis. We celebrated in December when we were treated to very enjoyable Christmas music when long-time member Betsy Garfinkle and Jane Dykstra serenated us on their flutes, bless them for their offering and uplifting our spirits. There is good news about the weekly Knitting Club at the elementary school, which volunteers from the Guild have been running for eleven years. Altho IVGID has dropped its sponsorship, the Boys and Girls Club is taking over the IVGID after-school activities; so the Knitting Club will resume on Wednesday, January 24 th. Even if you aren t part of the Guild, you can help with this great program whenever you are able, the number of volunteers from the Guild having dropped, which isn t good for giving enough attention to the students. In the first three quarters of 2017, 54 items were distributed to the following groups: 18 items to the Village Church for their outreach program 5 items to a high school student s project for the needy 12 items to Project Mana s distribution in Tahoe City 4 items to Pet Network for sale in their thrift shop 4 items to the Women & Family Center at Tahoe Forest Hospital, Truckee 8 items sold from our hallway display 3 items for the Women s Club of North Tahoe for their silent auction Plus yarn donated to the Hooks and Ladders Knitting & Crochet Club at Folsom Prison In the last quarters of 2017, always our busiest time of the year, 187 items were distributed to the following groups: 18 items to Project Mana s distribution in Tahoe City 61 items to Project Mana s distribution in Incline Village 7 items to the Long-Term Care Unit of Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee 8 items to the Emergency Warming Center in Truckee 61 items to the Christmas food box distribution by the Village Church 12 items to the Community House in Kings Beach 19 items to the North Tahoe Warmth & Wellness give away 1 item sold from our hallway display Come Join Us! Karen Barney We welcome anyone who loves to knit or crochet, and we can help you if your skills need refreshing!
