2004 St. Patrick s Shamrock OCTOBER A Newsletter of St. Patrick s Episcopal Church 341 Village Blvd P.O. Box 3158 Incline Village, NV Phone: (775) Update from Kate Issue date Oct. 1, 2004 Published Monthly Issue No. 727 Dear Friends, What a smorgasborg of activities we have to enjoy at St Patrick s this October! At the beginning of the month there is our blessing of pets service, in recognition of the ministry of St Francis. This is one of my favorite services. I look forward to seeing the variety of pets brought to church for a blessing, and I m always curious to see what unexpected contribution our furry and feathered friends might make! Most of all, it is good to share a special time of worship with the creatures who are so important to our lives. One of the highlights of our blessing of pets service, is a drama prepared by some of the younger members of St Patrick s. David Vomund has been working with the children to prepare this, and I hope that these dramatic presentations will become a regular feature of our services. There is no better way of celebrating the gifts of our church members, than by including them in our acts of worship. On October 2 nd, our music group will be providing the music for Saturday Night Alive. And Chris Maffucci, a member of the Youth and Children s Ministry Team, will be giving the talk at that service. My thanks to all these willing souls; I am sure we will be seeing more of them in the months to come. In the middle of the month, Dave and I will make our annual exodus to Diocesan Convention, along with our Senior Warden and several other lay people who serve as Convention Delegates. But don t let that stop you from coming to church on October 16 th or 17 th. Judy Morrison and Ron Young will ensure that Saturday Night Alive goes ahead as planned, while Connie Skidmore and Steve Barney will be responsible for Morning Prayer at 8:00 and 10:00 on Sunday morning. Don t miss Steve s debut in the pulpit that day! On Tuesday evening, October 19 th, we are honored to welcome Rachael Freed as a guest speaker at St Patrick s. Author of Women s Lives, Women s Legacies, Rachael is a powerful ambassador for spiritual ethics, and the bequest of beliefs and blessings to future generations. We are very privileged to have her at St Patrick s that evening, and I urge you to attend her seminar. Last but not least, there is the incomparable Musical Feast at the Chateau on October 24 th. Whatever you do, don t miss this evening of great food, great entertainment and a silent auction packed full of great lots! Remember to buy your tickets by the 14 th or you might be too late. continued. Page 3
St. Patrick s Shamrock Page 2 The Penny Once in awhile what I find on is worth repeating. Several years ago, a couple was invited to spend the weekend at the husband's employer's home. The wife, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway, and cars costing more than her house. The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband's employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so she was enjoying herself immensely. As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment. Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts. Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny. He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up? Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer. She causally mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value. A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this? "Look at it." He said. "Read what it says." She read the words "United States of America." "No, not that; read further." "One cent?" "No, keep reading." "In God we Trust?" "Yes!" "And?" "And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful! When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the words, "In God We Trust," and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message. It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful! And God is patient...
St. Patrick s Shamrock Page 3 Update from Kate.. Cont d At the same time that all these activities and events are taking place, our Vestry is making huge strides in the process of finding and calling a new Rector. My thanks to everyone who completed the Parish Survey and provided helpful content for our Parish Profile. Grateful thanks too, to Karen Barney and Steve Barney the Vestry members who have worked so hard to produce the Profile, and to Joy Strotz who has taken such wonderful photographs. We will be going to print with that document before the end of the month, and then the wheels will begin to turn even faster. Long Term Care Insurance Prudential Financial is offering Long Term Care Insurance for Episcopal volunteers, lay employees, clergy, family members and anyone! Say you put your money into 401(k)s and IRAs to enjoy financial security when you retire. But if you should need long term care, you may be forced to spend savings you intended to use for retirement income. That s why the Church Pension Group is making coverage from The Prudential Insurance Company of America available to you today. Long Term Care helps with tasks you normally take for granted such as eating, bathing and dressing, things you may be unable to do because of a chronic illness or disability. Long Term Care consists of service not covered by most medical insurance plans, disability plans, or Medicare. For more information, please see the poster on the bulletin board in the Church hall, or visit

St. Patrick s Shamrock Page 6 Over the Mountains and Around the Town United Thank Offering will be having our Fall Ingathering on November 7, There is a lot to be thankful for, even when you may be going through rough times. I also wish to remind all the younger members of the congregation, this is a way you can express your thankfulness as well. This is not just for adults, it is for everyone. We ask that you use the little blue boxes and, every time you are thankful, offer a prayer to God and a penny for others. Gather your offerings up and turn them in on Nov 7th. We will send them on to the diocese where they will be combined with the gifts Community Knitters Guild The Community Knitters Guild has been busy producing warm blankets, scarves, hats, booties, and more for children and adults in Incline Village and Kings Beach. A box of these gifts was recently delivered to the Family Resource Center in Kings Beach and was gratefully received. Layettes for babies expected by the Well Baby Clinic in Incline Village have been assembled and await the arrival of the newborns. Two new projects of the guild are first, to make Chemo Caps for cancer patients, that are then given to Washoe Medical Center in Reno. Second, members have begun giving knitting lessons at the Boys and Girls Club in Kings Beach. The 3rd and 5th graders are very enthusiastic. Soon, older children will be offered classes too. Our membership continues to grow, and if you are interested in finding out more about the guild, please call Peggy Harrison at

St. Patrick s Shamrock Page 9 OUR NEWEST SERVICE SATURDAY EVENING WORSHIP!!! Our Saturday evening worship service started in September. It provides a unique alternative to our usual Sunday morning services. It is an informal service, which includes Holy Eucharist, and a homily which is geared for younger church members. The service begins at 5:30 p. m. on Saturday evening, and finishes by 6:30 p.m., making it an ideal service for families to attend along with anyone who has conflicting obligations on Sunday morning. Please invite your friends to this service, and help to make it a success. We have a number of lost and found items in the office and hall. If you lost a Bible, a shirt, or some kids clothes, please check with the office to see if they belong to you.
