1 Turbotville News & Happenings October 2011 CHURCH NEWS Holy Spirit Lutheran Rt. 44 Sunday Worship at 9:15am Pastor Dan May Greetings from your friends at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church! Guessing that this isn t out by October 8, we hope you enjoyed the Tractor Ride through our area and our Fall Festival. If this is in your hands by Oct 7, come on out to the Fall Festival at Holy Spirit! Food, fun, tractors, and more, 10 am- 4pm. We ve started a new group on Wednesday evenings called OWLs (Over Weight Lutherans). All that good food catches up with you, so this group is helping to help folks lose some pounds. Last week collectively the group lost 24 ½ pounds! Join us on Wednesdays at 6:30pm (weigh-in optional) and 7pm for the meeting where we share recipes, encouragement, and some laughs. Men and women can come! As usual, our Afternoon Communion Service is offered on the third Sunday of the month (10/16) at 1:30pm. All are welcome for this quiet service of Holy Communion. Speaking of worship, Reformation Day is coming up October 30. At our 9:15am service that day, nine of our young people will be confirmed! Come celebrate with them and us! On November 6 we ll remember All Saints Day, with Bishop Robert Driesen to preach that morning. Join us for worship each week at 9:15am with a learning hour afterwards and as the holiday season approaches, remember: Avoid the Christmas rush come to worship this Sunday! CHRISTMAS BAZAAR Mark your calendars for the CHRISTMAS BAZAAR at Holly Spirit Lutheran Church! Nov. 5 from 9 am to 4 pm. Chinese auction, food stand, bake sale and Christmas and gift items for sale! Join us for worship at 9:15am, and for the learning hour that follows. We are located on Route 44 on the way to McEwensville. 2 Reformation Sunday on October 30 th will celebrate with six of Zion s youth participating in the rite of Affirmation of Baptism after two years of instruction. The Jolly Bunch will meet October 12, 2011 and invites any area senior citizens to join them at 10:30 for a guitar sing-along and story telling with Pastor Roux followed by lunch at a local restaurant. LAST CHANCE FOR APPLE DUMPLINGS! Disaster Relief Team will once again be making their delicious desserts on Thursday and Friday, November 3 rd and 4 th. You can buy them baked or unbaked to eat now or put in the freezer for later. What a nice treat to get them out of the freezer in those cold winter months, long after apples are out of season. Dumplings are still $2.50, the same price as last year. Read Across the Valley author visit - Thursday, October 7:00 Susquehanna University Weber Chapel. Dr. Donald B. Kraybill, PhD will be talking about the recent novel he coauthored Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy. Dr. Kraybill s presentation will explore the demonstration of grace and forgiveness in the Amish community after the Nickel Mines School massacre on October 2, 2006, in Lancaster County, PA.This event is part of Read Across the Valley s Living Simple, Living Plain series. Drawing for the Churn Dash Quilt will be held prior to the presentation. Quilt tickets are available at local libraries for $3.00 each or 2 for $5.00. 4 Train Station Flooding and Construction Update: Construction of the new foundation for the train station has started on the Turbotville Community Grounds. Over the course of the past several weeks, local contractor Frank Cotner, along with several of his crew have excavated the location on the Community Grounds where the station is to be placed. Footers have been poured, drains installed, and laying the donated blocks for the foundation has begun. Recent flooding in the Bloomsburg area has pushed back the date for moving the train station because a portion of the roadway, next to the Route 42 bridge and near the entrance to the train station, has been washed away. Columbia County PennDOT has been in contact with us and will notify us as to when the road is scheduled to be repaired and reopened for traffic. Without Route 42 being opened, we have no way to get the train station back to Turbotville. Website Updates: NEW additions to the website at include a picture postcard history of the life of the Turbotville Train Station during it s years at the Magee Transportation Museum from 1964 to There is also a picture book of recent flooding at the Train Station in Bloomsburg. Both of these are under the HISTORY tab on the website. If you would like to be on our update list and receive updated s about the progress of the train station project, when the train station will be dismantled and moved, and other events, please send an to msechler@turbotville.org asking to be added to the list with Add Me in the subject line. Please include your full name, address, and phone number (if desired). Volunteers: We are actively seeking volunteers to assist with the train station relocation project. If you would like to be a part of this historic event and you have carpentry, masonry, or electrical skills to construct the new foundation or for the dismantling and reassembly of the station, or if you would like to help serve or donate food to the work crew on the day the train station is dismantled, please let us know? You can provide your time and skills, or donate funds or food for the work crew by contacting TBHS President Michael Sechler at Turbotville Commemorative Items: I know most people don t want to hear it, but Christmas IS coming once again. Just the thought of fighting store crowds makes most people cringe. Keeping that in mind, we have Turbotville commemorative items in stock and available for purchase. The items include the Turbotville Afghan for $35.00, Turbotville Yardsticks for $2.00 each are available at the Dollar Barn and Great Valu, a limited edition nickel plated locomotive bank commemorating the 125 th Anniversary of the train station for $25.00 each, and a limited edition print of the Turbotville Train Station by local artist Raymond Weaver from Millville, PA for $ each. Currently, 1/3 of the prints have already been sold. All these items are IN STOCK for immediate delivery and can be seen at our website Remember, Christmas is only a few short months away!!!! Meeting Time/Contact Info: Meetings are held the 2 nd Tuesday of each month at 7 pm in the basement of the Community Hall. This is a completely volunteer organization and to become a member, all you need to do is show up! If you are interested in local history or would like to be involved with the move of our historic train station, come to our next meeting and see what s happening, or contact Michael Sechler at or msechler@turbotville.org TURBOTVILLE AREA LOINS CLUB BIXLER BENEFIT RAFFLE The Lions are selling raffle tickets for a beautiful, solid cherry gun cabinet made by Paul LaForme. It can be viewed at the Turbotville National Bank during regular business hours. The proceeds from the raffle will benefit Todd and Jesse Bixler and family. The cost of each ticket is $5.00 and can be purchased from a Turbotville Lions Club Member. Drawing will be held Nov. 22nd. If you haven't already purchased your ticket(s) you may want to contact a member a.s.a.p. as they are selling fast!

Please be cautious if driving thru our borough that night remember the children are excited to be out there and sometimes forget to watch for traffic before crossing the streets. To our trick-or-treaters please remember safety first and have fun but be careful!
