3 As I sit down to write for the September Telstar thought, I am amazed that it is almost the end of summer. The summer seemed like it started just a few weeks ago and now it is almost fall. I wonder where did all that time go? What did I do all summer? You might be asking yourself these same questions. In today s world time seems like it moves faster than ever before. We are constantly moving trying to pack as much as we can into every minute of every day. I was recently reading an article titled Be Still and Know that I am God. The article ended up not having anything to do with the title, But that phrase stuck with me. How many times over the summer have you been able to slow down, be still and focus on God? I realized that I have do it very few times. We need time to shut down our minds and focus on God our creator. Time to witness nature, animals, stars and all the other simple things that God created all around us. As we begin new schedules, new tasks and new seasons, take time to notice all the beautiful creations that God made for all of us to enjoy. As we get ready for fall, know that God loves each of you and God created this marvelous world for all of us. Take some time and enjoy it! God Bless! Pastor Joey 3
4 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF SAVANNA ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL Sunday July 16, :45am The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Burt Dauphin with 11 members and 1 guest present. Pastor Joey Garcea opened the meeting with prayer. Kris Yingling moved and Paul Mayer seconded a motion to accept the minutes from the previous meeting as presented and the motion passed. Vivian Eaton presented the financial reports. Paul moved and Peg Dauphin seconded a motion to accept the reports and the motion carried. TRUSTEES: Paul reported there is a dead tree in front of the parsonage that will be removed. The committee will ask for volunteers to maintain the flower box in the church yard. If no one volunteers, the box will be removed. Someone has built a shed on our triangler property across Oakton Rd. Rather than have the church get involved the Savanna Police will handle the situation and the shed will be removed. The fence around the church s air-conditioner will be replaced. The committee recommends the hiring of Dave Smith and Dave Milsap to install a handicap-accessible bathroom in the church, at a cost of $25 per hour each and the recommendation passed. Work will begin soon. The playground committee estimates the retaining wall will cost around $10,000. The committee recommends moving ahead with this project and the recommendation passed. The playground committee will meet this week. EDUCATION: VBS is this week. FINANCE: Randy Bonjour handed our copies of the guideline book from the United Methodist Church, Finance, Handling God s Money in the Church. The committee recommends Vivian Eaton be authorized to co-sign checks, which is allowed according to the guideline book, and the recommendation passed. WORSHIP: Peg reported the committee had a busy June. The Blessing of the Bikes service and luncheon was well-received. Blessing of the Backpacks will be held in September. UMW: LaVona Grissinger hosted a picnic at her home on July 11, 2017 and a business meeting will be held on July 25th to discuss the fall salad supper and bazaar and luncheon. PASTOR S REPORT: Pastor Joey is back from vacation and didn t lose any of his 4 boys! He and LaVona are going to a conference workshop on August 5, Part of the annual conference will focus on human sexuality, and will be part of our charge conference agenda. 4
5 The United Methodist Church will deal with questions of membership, same-sex marriages, and ordination of homosexuals. There will be a special church conference in February, 2019, to deal with these topics. Joey would like to hold a church picnic soon. INTERCHURCH COUNCIL: Pam Darrow reported they are meeting on Tuesday night. The meeting was adjourned at 11:53am. Respectfully submitted, Molly Andersen 5
