For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners. Matthew 9:13 Sunday s Reflection The purpose of Sacred Scripture is in part to teach us about the faith, to provide to us what the Church calls divine revelation. Our Second Reading from the Book of Revelation provides insights of which we need to be aware. The name of this Book Revelation is derived from the very first words of the Book, which are The revelation of Jesus Christ Written in Greek, the word translated as revelation is apokalypsis, meaning unveiling or indeed revelation. As indicated in today s reading this book is written by John on the island called Patmos. Our Catholic tradition tells us that this is John the Apostle, although scholars sometimes disagree with that assessment and conclusion. We do nonetheless know what and where Patmos is. The Island of Patmos was the Roman Empire s version of Alcatraz Island, a place where some were exiled and forced to work in the marble quarries found there. Ten miles long and six miles wide, Patmos has been described as lonely and desolate. Yet for John, the writer of this Book, it does not separate him from God or from his fellow Christians. He describes in today s narrative the revelation, which came to him there, but to experience such a revelation he had to be aware and open to the Words of the Lord. We may at times feel just as exiled, just as lonely, but if we remain open and conscious of God s presence, we, too, may find solace and comfort and instructions. That is what being a steward is all about being attentive to what God is saying to us. Next Weekend s Celebrants (subject to change) Sat April 9 5:00 PM Fr. The monies collected in these second collections help the parish defray the operating costs which exceed the anticipated or budgeted operating costs. Our budgeted expenses include salaries, benefits, utilities, and scheduled maintenance items. In addition, we include additional deferred maintenance which we anticipate will need to be performed if our projected offertory income (based on the prior year average weekly offertory) exceeds our other projected costs. Unfortunately, unplanned costs occur which must be incurred, and these second collections help us to cover those costs. Special Operating Needs would also include items such as the cost of paying for items like enhancing the audio/visual capabilities of the parish, supplemental musicians for special liturgical celebrations, replacement of copier, replacement of outdated printers, etc. While we work very hard to maintain and reduce operating costs on an ongoing basis, costs increase over time. At the same time, our average offertory has steadily decreased over the last several years. These second collections are critical to our parish s financial health and well-being. Without your generosity, we simply could not keep up with upkeep! Religious Retirement Thank You The National Religious Retirement Collection extends deep gratitude for your generous response to their annual collection. Thank you for remembering the contributions of religious women and men who have given so much in the past. Your gift enables the religious institutes to provide for their care, and to continue their mission with vitality. Thank you for your continuing support!

9 SEH HOPES YOUR EASTER WAS FILLED WITH JOY! Thank you for your March donations. We received 62 bags and boxes containing 372 items. That should last about two weeks. SEH requests baby food for infants and toddlers (cereal, fruits, vegetables). They also need powdered milk. For someone who is poor, the cost of powdered milk is prohibitive. Suggestion: If you purchase tuna fish, could you purchase 2 cans (at least 4 ounces in size) as well as 1 box of Tuna Helper? This will enable folks to fix an easy meal along with the canned vegetables the food pantry gives them. Also, MARS grocery store in Essex has been donating to SEH each week. We primarily receive bakery products with Best By Sell Dates that are close to expiring and dented canned vegetables. There s nothing wrong with any of these products. The store just chooses not to sell these. MARS also donates fresh fruits, primarily bananas, and sometimes vegetables. All have reached peak freshness, and MARS would rather donate them than sell them. We pick these items up on Thursdays, and they are given away the very next day at SEH. The folks receiving these items are more than happy to get them. We encourage everyone to please read: Matthew, Chapter 25, Verses 31 through 40. We think you will be pleased about what God says about you. Once again, THANK YOU for opening your hearts (and your wallets) to helping others.
