Holly Davis, Pastor Vol 13, Num 9, Sept 2018 From the Pastor s Heart Buckets, Buckets, everywhere! Hopefully you are noticing more and more buckets appearing around the church building. Don t worry, it s not because we have a leaky roof! Instead, these buckets are illustrations to help challenge us to live into our mission of Loving God and Our Neighbor. Each week (for 8 weeks) we ll focus on Buckets of Joy, Encouragement, Mercy, Harmony, Hospitality, Gratitude, Hope and Love. Of course, we can t manufacture any of these things on our own. We can t decide; I m going to overflow with joy this week and by sheer determination make it happen. All these qualities are gifts from knowing and growing in Christ. Does your bucket seem to be full of holes? Instead of overflowing with God s love, do you find yourself being critical, complaining and self-centered? Why is it such a struggle to remember the gift of God s extravagant love? Are you asking the Lord to keep filling your bucket full? 2 Building and Grounds (continued) Budget Tracker Through July 31st Nancy Thompson, CPA New directional sign above stairwell Ron Morrow, Chair The Building & Grounds Team met Wednesday, August 1, with BJ opening the meeting with prayer. Attending were (recovering) Bo Prevost and Nink Swift, Larry Oakley, Lee Galloway, Paul Mann, newly returned Jim Day, and BJ Morrow. Lee gave an update on the manse disposal effort after Waynesville s Historic Commission Committee decision to allow removal. The subcommittee has erected a sign in front of the building, and it is being advertised. Lee has been working with Preservation NC for additional tools and resources to help with this effort, and the team has had all utilities disconnected and has been showing the house to interested parties. Dick and Lisa were on vacation but Dick had ordered a new directional sign for the stairwell at the Fellowship Building double door entry. Bo, Nink, Lisa, and Dick continue to monitor the landscaping watering needs, and they maintain the weed control and other grooming needs of these areas. We have received many compliments on the appearance of the church. The ramp stucco repair is progressing with Larry working on this as well as trimming and spraying for web worms. Our next meeting is scheduled for Sept 5 at 10 am. Larry Oakley doing stucco repair on the ramp wall. Thanks, Larry! Rick Croskery finishing up a wheel chair ramp for Howard and Ann Kline. Nice work, Rick and Ronny! Session Notes Ron Tingle, Clerk Of Session Your Session met on August 13th. The meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm in the church parlor. The meeting was opened by Pastor Holly with prayer. The devotional discussion focused on I AM the Vine. After reviewing prayer concerns for our congregation, elders prayed for healing of members of the flock. A quorum was declared; the minutes of the July 9th meeting were approved and the meeting agenda was approved as presented. Members of the Archive Team asked the Clerk to place any attachments mentioned in the minutes with the official copy of the minutes for historical purposes and to place these in the current-year archive, even before review by Presbytery. Clerk Ron Tingle agreed that these were excellent suggestions and will begin this practice retroactively with all 2018 Minutes.

3 Session Notes (continued) Treasurer Nancy Thompson delivered another positive financial report. July income slightly outpaced expenses and yearto-date income is $16,395 ahead of expenses. Year 2019 budget worksheets will come to committee chairs this coming week for submission by September 24. Drew Schrader moved for acceptance of the Treasurer s Report; the motion was seconded and carried. Nancy Thompson updated Session on the Endowment Committee s progress with formulating a comprehensive endowment policy. Because of several recent valuable inputs from those experienced in the field, there are modifications which will be included and a document presented to Session for approval at its September meeting. Denise Butler reminded Session of Usher-Greeter training to be conducted after worship on August 19. Leaders will be Dick Siegrist and Lee Galloway. Access to the church (and loaner keys, where appropriate) was approved for: Pathways Clergy meeting, September 8 th (Keith Morri son) Tuscola Band Yard Sale, September 15 th PEO December 11 and February 12 (Pat Briggs) Ron Tingle reminded elders of the upcoming need to form an Elder Nominating Committee, as the 2-year term of the current members has expired. We will repeat the process of using the middle year elders, with 3 others from the congregation, as elected in a congregational meeting to be held in early Fall. Pastor Holly continued our previous discussion of the Grow Forward Team to propose and plan actions to occur during the upcoming three years to correlate with and build upon our longer term Vision. Team member nominees are Stan Briggs, Linda Cox, Andrea Croskery, Lee Galloway, Lynn Kelley and Ron Morrow. Session approved the team membership as presented. Tom Owens from the Open Door ministry will conduct our Minute for Mission on October 14. Lynn Heinrichs will conduct our Minute for Mission on October 21, as the Operation Christmas Child kickoff. November 18 has been designated as Pledge Sunday. After elder review of other upcoming events in the church calendar, the meeting adjourned after prayer by the elders. Just a reminder that there is no smoking on the church campus. Thank you Christian Education Joan Schrenk, Chair To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven Ecclesiastes 3:1 Each thing in life has its proper time or cycle. The fall season is approaching with the trees full of beautiful colored leaves. This is assurance that another cycle comes to its appointed time. Seekers Sunday school class continues the study of the book Believing in Jesus Christ. This will be followed by a study in Proverbs led by Paul Koptak. This leads up to the Advent season. Isaiah class continues an in depth study of the book of Romans. Come join one of these classes. Do you want more understanding of the Word heard in the Sunday's worship service? Come to the lunch and Bible bunch at noon each Monday and have a full spiritual meal. Sept. 9, 2018 at 4:30 pm is movie night. This month is the film Different Drummers. This is a heartwarming yet unlikely friendship between two boys growing up in Washington in the 1960's. Come join us to meet the two boys David and Lyle and experience their story. Popcorn and drinks are served. The Christian Education committee will meet September 24 at 3:15 in the Church parlor. Anyone is welcome to join our team. Hospitality Judi Crane, Chairperson THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to everyone who helped last month with the annual picnic. That includes hauling stuff to the picnic grounds, setting up the picnic area, cleaning up the grounds afterwards and bringing stuff back to the church. The picnic was a huge success and it could not have happened without the help from all of you. And a very special and heartfelt thank you from me to the Hospitality team; Carolyn DeGrove, Melonie Gross, Marilyn and Trudy Rowe, and Janet Tingle. You guys are the greatest! An added bonus was the weather, which turned out to be beautiful. With all the rain we ve had this summer it was iffy right up the end, but I couldn t have asked for a better day. September s pot luck luncheon will be on Sunday the 9 th. No special theme this month so just bring any delicious dish you

4 Hospitality (continued) want. Don t know how it works out so well but we always seem to have such a wonderful variety of food and plenty of it! The Hospitality team will meet on Friday September 7 at 10:00 to set up for Sunday s luncheon. Mission Pat Briggs, Chairperson We will be cooking for Haywood Community Learning Center on Sept. 12 and each month thereafter on the 2nd Wednesday. This is a trial and will only work if I am able to get 5-6 cooks each month. I want to thank Charlotte Casey, Melonie Gross, Beth Johnson Janice Campbell, Judy Covin for joining me in cooking for September. If you would like to be part of this wonderful mission project, please contact Pat Briggs at Presbyterian Women Laura Janson, Moderator Ruth Circle is meeting on September 11th at 1 pm in the Parlor. We will be discussing lesson 3 Abigail and collecting laundry soap for Barium Springs home for youth. See you there! This is a temporary time change because of the Labor Day Holiday. Library Beth Johnson, Librarian Help for Teachers and Scholars Do you teach a Sunday School class? Would you be will to but feel you don't know enough? Have you always wondered why the 12 Apostles seem to miss the point of Jesus' parables? Do you want to know more about a particular book, person or prophet in the Bible? Our library has 5 shelves full of Bibles, Biblical commentaries, Biblical dictionaries and study books for each book of the Bible. Go to our Library and Learn! Thank you to all those who participated in the socks and underwear drive. These were much needed and provide underwear to those in the county in need. Church member Bo Prevost is pictured on the left, and volunteers at Clothes for Kids and helps distribute clothes to those kids in need.

5 The Rite-Air (now Walgreens) in Canton will once again be conducting a flu shot clinic at the church. Following worship on Sunday, October 7 th from 12 to 2:00 in the Fellowship Hall. As with past years, the clinic will offer both types of vaccines. The shot is free with most insurances. [bring your insurance card to the clinic that day.] There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board. Signing up will let the pharmacy know how to plan. Mark your calendars and take advantage of this convenient way to stay healthy this fall. Git-Tar Git-Down Or Jamm in With Joel Are you sad because you have no one to play with? Is your guitar, fiddle or voice getting dusty from lack of use, just waiting for other lonely players to play with? Does your family complain when you play the washboard or jug or spoons with the radio? Does your dog run and hide when you croon with your favorite band? Well there is a place for you. Come join us on Mondays, 4 pm to 5 pm in fellowship hall to jam with any and all players and singers who show up.. This is purely for fun and fellowship and we welcome all levels. We will supply the music but you are encouraged to bring any songs you would like to do with the group. See you Monday!!! The Year is 1918 The average life expectancy for men was 47 years. Fuel for cars was sold in drug stores only. Fourteen percent of the homes had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2,000 per year. A dentist earned $2,500 per year. A veterinarian between $1,500 and 4,000 per year. And, a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births took place at home. Ninety percent of all doctors had no college education. Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month and, used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason. The Five leading causes of death were:1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4 Heart disease 5. Stroke The American flag had 45 stars...the population of Las Vegas, Nevada was only 30. Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet. There was neither a Mother's Day nor a Father's Day. Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write And, only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind,regulates the stomach, bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health!" (Shocking?) Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help... There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A.!
