Our council did achieve some events that showed we were capable of being on the correct path. Thank you to our brother knights for helping to achieve a record amount of money being donated to the Indiana Special Olympics at the Tootsie Roll Drive on May 10 at Farmers Market. Thank you Brother K. C. and Lady Pocius for heading up the Lourdes Dinner this year. Thank you brother officers for your help and guidance. I will see you at our June council meetings. Vivat Jesus! PREBYS, J. FRANK MILES SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE MAY 31st The Santa Maria Council # 553 of the Knights of Columbus makes available each year one scholarship to St. Joseph's High School, South Bend, or Marian High School, Mishawaka, to a son or a daughter of a living or deceased member of the Council. The recipient shall be a graduate of an elementary school. 1. The scholarship may be held for a maximum of four years, and, except in special circumstances, must be completed within four academic years. 2. The scholarship holder shall be a person of good character, moral worth and good Intellectual ability, who has given evidence of a capacity to profit from a Catholic high school education. 3. The scholarship holder shall be a person who has a proven need for financial assistance in SOUTH BEND 150TH CELEBRATION Memorial Day weekend is also the South Bend 150th birthday celebration, and Santa Maria Council 553 is celebrating 114 of those years of serving our community by offering pierogis and Polish sausage (as a part of SB150 Taste of South Bend) - as well as information about our council and order. There are many ways you can help with this, and many time slots to cover. We will have one tent for food and pop, with the Columbus Club selling beer in an adjacent tent. Tents will be on Jefferson Blvd across from the Century Center and Crow Horvath. Help will Be needed beginning Wednesday, May 20 as we precook food and pick up supplies (5:30-9:30 pm). Thursday, May 21 is set aside for tents and other set-up activities (5:30-9:30 pm). Friday, May 22 is remaining hardware and kegarator to the tent sites. (8 hours during the day). Saturday and Sunday are staffing the tents and running for supplies. Steve anticipates 4-hour shifts. Saturday hours are 10am - 11 pm. Sunday hours are 11 am to 6 pm and tear down immediately afterwards. The awarding of this scholarship is contingent upon the holder s ability to meet all requirements and regulations of the high school. The Council shall have the right to require the scholarship holder to give, at any time, satisfactory evidence of accomplishments at the high school; and the Council may declare the scholarship forfeited if such evidence is not conclusive indication of the holders' progress. 6. A group of five prominent citizens of St. Joseph County, Indiana will select the winner of the scholarship after conducting interviews with the candidates at a time and place to be announced. The Chairman of the Council Scholarship may make a preliminary selection of candidates for the scholarship. 7. The Council reserves the right to reject any or all applicants for the scholarship who do not meet the requirements as to character, Fr. This is a Catholic organization that builds character and develops leadership. The Squires program was established August 4, 1925 by Christian Brother Barnabas McDonald in Duluth, Minnesota. Today there are more than 1,100 Squires Circles with nearly 25,000 members in the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, the Virgin Island and Guam. The Columbian Squires goal is to help young men to develop into the leaders of the Church and community of tomorrow. Their motto is Esto Dignus, Latin for "Be Worthy." Membership is open to young men between the ages of 10 and 18 years of age. Santa Maria Council 553 of the Knights of Columbus was the former home of Fr. Sorin Circle 2, and we are looking to reactivate. We need some young men to be a part of history as check to Corvilla Home. the 2nd oldest Squire Circle in the WORLD comes back on line!
