2 (Cont. from pg. 1) Pray with your sisters around the synod each Monday at noon. Just stop for a few minutes to pray for all of the many projects in which we are all involved and remember those who might need a special prayer on that particular Monday or throughout that week. If you wish to receive our list of individuals wanting prayer, let me know by sending me your address. Grace and peace, Sharon Johnson NC Women of the ELCA President ALLOWING OTHERS TO MINISTER By Denise White We, Christians, understand serving others. We, women, understand serving others. It is apparent in our purpose statement: As a community of women created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world. Women of the ELCA Purpose Statement Promote the IN YOUR CONGREGATION, COMMITTEE, OR CONFERENCE Subscribe to the free Online Carolina Vine with a TEXT message. Simply text the letters NCWELCA to to get started. Or, you may choose to subscribe to the colorful newsletter of the NC Women of the ELCA from the website: The subscriber's link is in the right column of the homepage. If you are currently a subscriber, simply forward your Vine to friends and they can subscribe right from the newsletter--again from the link in the right column. Please encourage every member and your church staff to subscribe and get the online newsletter ed directly to his or her inbox. Let's communicate and get our story out to everyone! We ve got the wonderful verbs of empowering, growing, affirming, supporting, engaging, promoting and calling. Those are powerful ways of serving. We are pretty good at it. We are NOT good at allowing others to serve us. When we are in distress or crisis and a sister or brother in Christ asks, what can I do? how do we answer? I don t know ; I m fine, really ; I don t need anything right now. I don t know why we are not able to say out loud, YES, I NEED YOU! Do we not want to imposition them? Do we really not want their help? Are we embarrassed that we need help? The reality is, when we say no or nothing to the inquiries of help, we are denying that person their opportunity for ministry. Do you want to be the stopping block for the work of the Holy Spirit? God calls us to serve and to minister.he is also calling us to allow it to happen. pg. 2

3 The International Day of Prayer for Peace What are you doing on September 21 st? It is my hope that you will become a part of the global observance of the International Day of Prayer for Peace. This initiative was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981 and the date, September 21 st, was adopted in 2001 as an annual day of non-violence and cease-fire. The United Nations invites all nations and people to honor a cessation of hostilities during the Day, and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace. As you read this, we are in the 100-day countdown to the observance. Right now, we have the chance to reflect on the moral, physical, and material toll wrought by war. Those costs are borne not only by us today, but by future generations as well. As we draw nearer to September 21 st, you will probably see interviews from celebrities designated by the United Nations as Messengers of Peace. They hope to inspire the public and make them more aware of this observance. Committee members are accepting positions, and things are already looking good for the 2014 North Carolina Synodical Women s Organization Gathering. Many ideas are afloat, and some work has already begun. What a wonderful theme we have to work with for 2014 Sisters Rejoicing Together. That is what we will be planning for all of you this year, a true time to rejoice and praise the Lord with all your Sisters in Christ. Remember to mark your calendars now for June 20-22, 2014 for another exciting North Carolina Gathering at Lenoir-Rhyne University!
