2 An Introduction from Pastor Mike Fillmore.. Isaiah 43:19 (NRSV) 19 I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Grace and Peace to you all, in the name of Jesus Christ, our risen Lord! My name is Mike Fillmore and I am pleased and excited to be your new pastor. As I write this article, we still do not have a date for the move to your area but we expect the date to be announced soon, and we think it will happen towards the end of June. I am a second career pastor, and I am coming from the United Methodist Church in Montezuma, Iowa. I have been there for three years, and during that time we have enjoyed tremendous blessings both personally, and as a church family. Prior to that I was one-half time associate pastor at Oakwood UMC in Pleasant Hill, a large suburban church on the east side of Des Moines, and one-half time pastor of Des Moines Wesley, an inner city church across from Des Moines East High School. While I was there both churches enjoyed many blessings and we enjoyed some incredible relationships with many, many outstanding people. I am a graduate of Saint Paul School of Theology with a specialty in Wesleyan Studies, and an elder in the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. My wife and I met at Central College and in June, we will have been married for thirty six years, (she has incredible patience with me!). We have three grown children. Our son Luke is just beginning his first full-time pastoral appointment in the United Methodist Church, and he is being sent to Shenandoah, Iowa. Luke and his wife Sarah have one child, eighteen month old Eleanor, whom I cannot say no to for any reason. We also have twin daughters Katie who lives in Iowa City and works for Ameri-Corp, reading to under privilege students in the elementary schools. Katie is a Luther College graduate with a double major in East Asian Studies and Music. She has traveled abroad quite extensively and speaks multiple languages, and plays multiple musical instruments. Our other daughter Ally, is also a Luther College graduate, and she also had double majors, but in Art and Communications. Ally is currently going back to school at UNI to get her teaching component so that she might be an art teacher and coach. She is a very talented photographer and videographer. (Continued on next page)
3 (Continued from previous page) My wife Kathy has her Master s Degree in Early Childhood Special Education and for many years worked as an early childhood teacher/consultant for the Area Education Agency. While we were in Montezuma she taught second grade, and she just accepted a position with the Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency, needless to say we are excited about that! Well, that s just a little about us. We are so anxious to meet each and every one of you, and to hear your stories. I cannot wait to hear about the history of each of the churches, and about your hopes and dreams for each of them. As you begin to pray about the next step for your churches, let me share this God is most definitely NOT Dead! Kathy and I have witnessed each church we have been at come alive again! We have witnessed God do incredible things, making church exciting and fun again. God is alive and active in our world today, and if we are faithful to the call from God, incredible things will happen in Hartley and St. Andrews United Methodist Churches, I am sure of that. Until we arrive, I am asking each one of you to do something-- BE IN PRAY ER. Ask God what the Holy, Divine plan is for each of the two churches. What is God calling us to? When we arrive we will try and discern that call, and decide as a church family how we might best live into that call. That journey is so much fun, we can t wait to get there! Be in prayer, and fear not, God is alive and active in our world. Peace to All, Mike mikefillmore09@gmail.com Follow me on Facebook
