1 Connecting People with God, Each Other, and the World Trinity UMC Trinity United Methodist Church 838 North 25th Street Fort Dodge, IA facebook.com/trinityumcfortdodge July 2016 LORD'S CUPBOARD MISSION PROJECT The Lord's Cupboard is one of the Mission Projects that has been generously supported by our Trinity congregation. Its mission is to help meet hunger needs of our community. In the summer months the number served goes up and the donations often go down. As in previous years paper bags will be supplied for your convenience on July 9-10 and July A list of needed and possible contributions will be attached to each bag. Filled bags should be returned by July 31st. Monetary gifts may be placed in the offering--be sure to indicate on the memo "Lord's Cupboard". The Wednesday Night Live Crew will be getting together for coffee on Wednesday, July 13th at 10:00 am! They will be discussing the agenda for the upcoming fall year. If you are interested in helping, please join them!

2 TRINITY YOUTH ATTENDED A MISSION TRIP IN MINNEAPOLIS FROM SUNDAY, JUNE 26TH UNTIL FRIDAY, JULY 1ST! CHECK OUT THE PICTURES AND WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE! The mission trip was a week of rewards on many levels. We had the opportunities to help the poor, the needy & the disadvantaged working with crews comprised of people of all ages & backgrounds from different parts of the country. Our crew members started the week as strangers & left as friends. It was a time of energy and fatigue; but mainly focused on praise, service, patience and tolerance. - Dan Cassady I had such an awesome experience at Week of Hope this past week in Minneapolis. My crew went to a youth center called PCYC (Plymouth Christian Youth Center). Those little kids touched my heart so tremendously and made everything worth it. If there's one thing I took away from this week it is to be grateful for what you have and that you don't always need more. The kids that attended PCYC were so grateful for everything which for some wasn't very much. No matter what you did with them, they were just happy to have someone loving on them. God led me to some extraordinary people and I made some awesome memories. God is good. - Kiara Wilson

3 The mission trip in Minneapolis this week opened up my eyes to many new experiences. I was put into a group of people that I loved and connected with instantly and that was helpful regarding our work ethic at our project sites. I heard many touching stories of ways God has shown himself this week. I will bring the things i've learned and practiced back to Fort Dodge. Thank you to everybody who made this possible. - Mikayla Pringle I had an extraordinary week! I will not forget the experience, the memories, or the people I have met. I was scared to go onto this trip but I had felt God's love and his assurance that it would be okay. I learned many things from this trip, which then broaden my faith. I want to thank our church for helping us get there and to Megan for setting this trip up! - Hanna Marks This week was so fun! Everyone was so happy and it made me happy. I really loved getting to go help people. Every time me and my crew walked into the friendship center their faces would light up and it made my face light up. My second work site was at the food group and every person made over 1000 meals each. It makes me feel really good knowing that we are helping the people that really need it. I loved meeting the new people and making the best of friends. I would love to go on more mission trips as the years go on. - Makinna Johll

4 This was so fun I wanted to stay. I wish that that we all had fun and that we ask her grew in our faith. I now that I grew a lot in my faith and I plan to grow a lot more in my faith. - Skylar Edgerton I had a great time in Minneapolis for our mission trip. I saw the lord working in many ways this week. I am very thankful for my opportunity to go on this trip and am very thankful anyone who helped us fundraise. - Cassie Willer I had an amazing time this past week serving the lord. I had the opportunity to do different projects throughout the week. First my group went to Cleveland park to play with some kids from a local program called PCYC. They were so much fun to play with and be around I got really attached to some of them and didn't want to leave. The first half of the second day I got to go back and play but after lunch I went to Saviors Housing which is another local charity to get the homeless into housing. There we packaged cleaning supplies into kits so the counselors could give them the kits to help them keep their house clean. We were able to package all of the women's care boxes needed and were able to package about 80 of the men. Thursday and Friday I went to one of the local food banks and helped to package some of the boxes to send out to the places they distribute to. The first day we focused on dates and pasta. We were able to package over 6,000 pounds of pasta and about 200 pounds of dates. The second day we focused on packaging boxes of fruit and dried bananas. We were able to package about 7,000 pounds of fruit and 600 pounds of dried bananas. Over all this week was amazing and I was really able to grow in my faith. Thank you so much for supporting us and helping us to go on this mission trip this week. - Taylor Willer

6 There are two notions I have been thinking about lately. My belief in a Creator God gets renewed ever summer. I know I have spent my life in the northern part of North America, but I have acquired a deep appreciation for the profound difference of the seasons. This difference rings out like a bell in the words of the scripture: "For everything there is a season." There is a rhythm to life that is not accidental in my opinion. What is the Creator God directing your attention toward during this good season of growth? Then my brother and I have been talking about our farmer grandpa. He would be 127 years old this year. The changes that have come to agriculture since grandpa was born are so dramatic we are at a loss for words to describe them. In fact the changes my brother and I have seen in our life time defy our understanding! Some times I wonder if all the change in agriculture alone, is not evidence that God has a sense of humor! I can see the creator God in my imagination smiling and saying "It sure took you long enough to understand some of the mysteries of my creation." So summer is a great time for us to take a deep breath, look around at creation, and thank God for being a good and ordered creator! Then I am looking forward to our next chapter in common ministry at Trinity with the Reverend Dr. Michael Blackwell. Dr. B comes to us with so much experience in pastoral care and the quest for social justice. I am looking forward to working with him as together all of us will continue Trinity's faithful witness to God's grace as revealed in Jesus. 7 Meet Our New Pastor! Michael D. Blackwell is Director Emeritus for Multicultural Education at the University of Northern Iowa, where he coordinated the programs and activities of the Center for Multicultural Education. He was also an adjunct faculty member in the department of philosophy and world religions, where he most recently taught courses on Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Twenty-First Century. Blackwell was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in Bridgeport and Stratford, Connecticut. He earned a bachelor s degree in government from Wesleyan University, a master of divinity degree from Yale Divinity School, and a doctor of philosophy degree, with distinction, in social ethics from Boston University. In addition, he spent two summers as a fellow at the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard University. He was licensed to preach at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where he also attended the Morehouse School of Religion; after serving as Assistant-to-the- Pastor at Messiah Baptist Church in Bridgeport, he was ordained as a minister at Immanuel Baptist Church in New Haven, CT, while a seminary student at Yale. He has been a community activist throughout his adult life, with special emphasis on addressing the plight of the poor and oppressed. In addition to UNI, he has taught at Southern Connecticut State University, Boston University, Curry College, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and Missouri State. In addition, he has held pastoral positions at the following institutions: Ebenezer Baptist Church; Messiah Baptist Church; Immanuel Baptist Church; St. Paul Episcopal Church; St. John s Baptist Church; Pitts Chapel United Methodist Church; Peace Fellowship Church; Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church; Morrow Memorial United Methodist Church; Trinity United Methodist Church, Hazleton; and Linden United Methodist Church. In his leisure time, Dr. B. likes to read biographies and detective novels, write (short stories, poems, and nonfiction), watch NBA and WNBA, play Free Cell and chess, and enjoy the company of friends.
