2 Robert Perrotta Robert is relatively new to our council, he transferred in a few months ago and promised to help out and become active. He has done so with great enthusiasm, showing up for events and orientations and has been working the beer booth at the crawfish festival. His excitement and genuine concern for being an active part in the council is contagious. He is now on our degree team and makes sure to include everyone in his genuine positive outlook on things. I just want to say thank you Robert, your efforts reflect highly upon this council and the Knights of Columbus. Keep up the good work C Rayford Rd. 3 I am burdened as a write this report. I know I should be upbeat and keep everyone excited about crawfish but I am really struggling. There is too much suffering going on right now. Over 7,500 people are dead from an earthquake. I cannot get my mind around it. Every disaster seems to outdo the previous disaster. More and more people are being slaughtered all over the world in huge unfathomable numbers. Thousands upon thousands of people are dying at the hands of ISIS and Boka Haram. And then there is America, erupting in violence, flaring hatred from wounds so deep, so unimaginably fresh that it seems insurmountable. Even though this country is not made up of all the same type of people, we act like we should all be the same. We are not all the same. That was what made us so powerful during the second world war. We understood something then that has gotten lost in translation, and now we sound just like ISIS and Boka Haram. There is just so much suffering going on in the world that we cannot even hear it anymore. I hear mothers and fathers speak about other people in front of their kids, with hate and such vitriol as if their words will have no repercussions whatsoever. Those children grow up to speak words filled with hate, but it is even harsher. They push the envelope, they strike out. They invent games like Sucker Punch where they walk up and punch someone in the face - even women in the face and knock them out. They invent video games where shooting a cop earns you points. They use words on the internet that they know will cause harm, even coming out and saying to other kids that they should kill themselves, and sadly many kids have listened. Those kids are having children of their own now, and their kids are listening too. Children now take guns to school to kill, not to show off. Some of our kids and sisters are teachers, and they re in the middle of it. Each one of us has been blessed in ways that we cannot even recognize anymore. We do not have to live the horrors that the rest of the world has to see, but that does not mean we can judge people because of that privilege. Do not inadvertently teach your grandkids how to hate. I wrote this prayer because I hear the hatred in every word even at church. People are failing, failing in their responsibility to their children in their responsibility to others, and more importantly their responsibility to their own souls. They hate democrats, gays, blacks, mexicans and the oppressed. When an entire city erupts in violence over a racially divisive shooting, you can t just brush it off. Your job is to pray for the oppressed. That is not the one with the gun. Pray with me: Holy Father, we thank you for the many blessings we have received today, please forgive us and our failures in recognizing the poor. We pray that you will help us to hear the voices that cry out in the dark who are hungry, and cold. Help us to see the outcasts of society as your son did, those in the shadows who may be lonely and burdened by sin. Help us to speak only words of healing and hope so that we may be better instruments of your glory. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen. II Timothy Chapter 3 But understand this: there will be terrifying times in the last days. People will be self-centered and lovers of money, proud, haughty, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, irreligious, callous, implacable, slanderous, licentious, brutal, hating what is good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, as they make a pretense of religion but deny its power.

4 Brother Knights: The month of May is upon us and council election of officers is just around the corner. This month our councils will be setting up their nominating committees to put things in order for the elections. Who can hold an officer s position? Any knight in good standing with his council and has completed the first three degrees of the Order is eligible to serve. All officer positions fall into the election process except for the Financial Secretary, Chaplin and the Lecturer. These three positions are appointed positions. The annual elections keep our councils moving forward in their work. They keep our councils in check as to its workings and it gives new a knight, who has achieved third degree, a chance to participate in the leadership of the council. For our existing officers, they should be reaching back to help bring other officers of the council through the different positions. Our existing officers should also be seeking out men in the council they feel will work to make a difference for the betterment of the council. New knights to the council, those men who have never held an officer s position or any knight that may have been an officer in the past, your leadership is needed. You will find your officers more than willing to help you as you begin your leadership process. Your willingness to serve will not go unnoticed and your dedication to the principles that help make our order great are the cornerstones on which we all serve. I hope each of your will prayerfully consider becoming an officer and taking on active role in your council and the election process. Our councils need your support. 5 From the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston We in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston rejoice that Pope Francis has chosen to honor this local Church by selecting one of her priests to serve as the third bishop of the Diocese of Victoria in Texas. Bishop-Elect Brendan Cahill has been a faithful priest of this Archdiocese for close to 25 years and brings a wealth of gifts and experiences with him in this new ministry. His appointment is a sign of the Holy Father s care for the needs of the people of Southeast Texas, whose deep Catholic roots continue to be a vital presence in the region. While we celebrate the news of this episcopal appointment with joy, we nevertheless recognize the great loss that comes with Bishop- Elect Cahill s departure. He has served the faithful of this diocese as a parish priest, seminary formator and Rector, and most recently as Vicar for Clergy and Chaplaincy Services. His warm and pastoral heart has been a wonderful asset to the people of Galveston- Houston and we are confident that he will serve the Diocese of Victoria well. As we look forward to his ordination in June, I want to assure Bishop-Elect Cahill of my own prayers and fraternal support during this time of transition. Our respect and love will certainly go with him to Victoria. I ask all the faithful of this Archdiocese to pray that through the intercession of the Mother of God, Our Lady of Victory, he may be a wise and faithful shepherd of God s holy people in Southeast Texas. 7 Loaves and Fishes We are now taking volunteers down to loaves and fishes once a month for a few hours on Saturday. (10:00 to 1:00 PM) They are more in need of food than anything else. When we were there last they ran out of food, maybe at 60% of the line outside. They had two women with little kids left who did not get to eat so the guys in the kitchen scrounged up some ravioli. One immigrant from Nigeria walked all the way across downtown only to find out he was too late. There was nothing for him. We will need no. 10 cans of food. Those are the big cans. If you find a big can of ravioli or something get it. Otherwise just a big can of green beans or fruit cocktail. Get one big can when you get groceries, they re not expensive. I will take them down there when I get them. Also there is only one bathroom in that facility, so any construction guys or contractors who may want to help build out a bathroom for the men and women would be great. Even if you just want to help. Our next visit will be Saturday May 23, 10:00 AM at Loaves and Fishes Downtown Congress Ave, Houston, TX If you want to help, trust me your presence there will help even if they have enough volunteers, just Bob Castro at: bob@marloe.com Scholarship The Herman Konczewski Memorial Educational Scholarship Committee is chaired by Worthy District President Bill Moeller. The scholarship program is responsible for getting scholarship funds to worthy recipients. They establish the rules, the requirements and the amounts that the council gives. 8 NEWSLETTER The newsletter committee is pretty simple. You just carry a camera or a cell phone with you and snap a few pictures of our events. Then just send them with a small blurb of what you saw to Bob Castro bob@marloe.com and we will get it in the newsletter. GOLF The Knights of Columbus Golf League began our Spring 2015 Session on March 5 at Wedgewood Golf Club in Conroe, just off of Highway 105 west of the 336 Loop. All are welcome and the ability to play golf is only a marginal requirement! Come on out and enjoy the company of fellow Knights and friends. At the same time, you will be helping a local charity, as the winner of each session picks a worthy organization of his choice for which to donate the prize fund. Our first week featured 9 hearty golfers, who enjoyed a nice, warm afternoon and finished before the cold and rain set in once again. We meet on Wednesdays around 3:00 pm (you can usually tee off a little earlier if desired) and stay for food and refreshments, good cheer and conversation. It s a great way to meet not only Knights from our Council, but other Knights in the area. Daylight Savings Time is now in effect, so we have plenty of time to finish our 9 hole rounds. Come and join us!!

9 Youth Our Boy Scout Troop just had 7 new Scouts join and they had their new Scout Camp Out at the end of February. The new scouts did great and we only had one case of homesickness, which after some encouragement from the boys I was OK. The Troop has grown to 27 Scouts, considering we had six scouts age out this past year, this is phenominal. We are in the fifth year of our Troop and all the original founders earned the Rank of Eagle Scout. This should make the Council proud as this achievement will follow them for the rest of their life. Six of the original founders are also graduating from high school this year and have all made commitments to college and are going into fields from engineering, pre-law and aviation. I m looking forward to our next camp out in April which is Camporee, which is a Scouting competition of skills. It is one of the most exciting camp outs of the year. We are going to summer camp at El Rancho Cima in the Hill Country at the end of June, and we currently have 19 boys slated to go. Brother Jose Ruvalcaba has started the ball rolling to restart our Squire Circle and I m happy about that. I would encourage anyone who has the time to assist him to do so. Thank you for all of your support to our Youth and our future. FAMILY COMMITTEE We are looking for a knight to be the Chairman of the Family Committee. Responsibilities include gathering info on all the young families and getting info to them about family nights and programs. If you have a family or know a family, let this be your big start. Keep track of events so you can get our families together and grow our council family. Kids love doing stuff where other kids are doing stuff. Vivat Jesus!! John Tatman, PGK The sinking of the APEX. Friday the first night of the crawfish festival the APEX garbage truck drove into the back of the preservation lot to make a U-Turn and sank down to the axles. The poor guys were digging that truck out from 7PM to 2:30 AM. The ground was soft on Friday, but completely unuseable on Saturday. After the rains we had to take the unprecedented steps of shutting down the entire lot.

11 Respect Life My Brother Knights, The overwhelming support of the Pro-Life Movement by individuals and varied organizations in the United States continues to have an impact on achieving the goal of winning the fight to end abortion and restoring protection to children in the womb. According to Fr. Frank Pavone, M.E.V,. here are a few reasons why the Pro-Life movement is winning. The most obvious, there is an ever growing involvement of young people in all aspects of the fight to end abortion. Some other are an ever increasing number of doctors, nurses, technicians, security guards, and others with roles in operating abortion mills having repented and becoming Pro-Life. Over half of America s freestanding abortion clinics have closed since 1993, from over 2,000 to approximately 740 today. Voters favoring Pro-Life candidates. The last several years have seen unprecedented legislative progress on behalf of the unborn childd, both at the federal and state level. And a wave if women and men across the country who are speaking out about how they regret having their child killed by abortion. Council 6557 is one of the organizations contributing toward winning the fight to end abortions by the visible support of The Helpers of God s Pecious Infants monthly Pro-Life Masses and Rosary Processions to local abortions clinics and other Dignity of Life events. Our next Rosary Procession will be on Saturday, May 16, with Mass at 8:10 am at Holy Ghost Church located at 6921 Chetwood Dr., Houston, Tx, 77081, Rosary procession to follow to Planned Parenthhood located at 5800 Bellaire Blvd. As Knights of Columbus it is our right and duty to stand up and be the Voice of the Voiceless and give Life to Possible. Remember, together much can be accomplished. Your Brother in Christ Paul(Yogi)Ybarra Jr. Pro-Life Director Contact Kirk Raines I-45 Suite 340 Conroe, TX Office: Fax: Cell: Toll Free:

I hope you and your family had a great finish to Now, the first quarter of 2015 is flying by. Hopefully, you ve established a few goals for this year. I ve learned a great tip regarding resolutions. First, write them down. It s not too late if you haven t already done this. Commit your goals to paper and post it someplace you will see it often. Writing down a goal is the first step towards achieving it. It may not make sense at first, but I m sure you have heard stories of the success this simple task can bring. Whether your goal is to exercise more, give more to charity, read more or watch less television, you re more likely to accomplish it if you write it down. Second, resolve to have an expert look at your finances. I recommend that you have a team of experts help you, and I would love to be the first you sit with. Let s schedule some time to meet together, and I, your professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent, will provide an insurance check-up (at no cost!) that will evaluate any gaps in your family s life insurance protection. Now might be the perfect time to fill those gaps, not later. Keep in mind that unlike many other products, you don t just need money to obtain life insurance; you also need good health, and no one knows when your health could change. Did I mention my check-up is free of charge? When was the last time you received something for free that could provide value to you and your family for generations? Call me today. Jose R.
