FROM THE REV Greetings and Love to all. We are into November now and it s hard to believe I have been here for a year already. Time is flying by. We are transitioning into a time of Thanksgiving and starting Advent this month. As we contemplate the abundance and gratitude for all that we have been given, we could spend time in prayer for those who are not so fortunate. Our community has been praying constantly for comfort and healing for several people and we have seen amazing miracles. We are bonded by the love of God and we feel it every day. You are all in my prayers every single day. Blessings Marijke FROM THE CLEANING CREW With the holidays coming up the building will have more activities. Please be sure that no food or drink is left on the floor or around the building. This can cause bugs. On Sunday after coffee hour please check the floor in the fireside room and kitchen and sweep if needed. Please also take out the trash from the kitchen and fireside room. Also if there are any bathroom emergencies there are cleaning supplies in the cleaning closet in-between the two bathrooms downstairs. Also for those working in the nursery we ask that you empty the nursery bathroom garbage can and do a quick check to make sure everything looks ok. Sometimes the building does not get cleaned till later in the week and anything left causes odors. Thank You TIME CHANGE Remember to move your clocks back (FALL BACK) for Sunday, November 6. Next Month s Clarion Deadline November 16th

From the Deacons The Lord s Free People by Marilyn Felkner If you know much about Camp Fellowship, you probably know that the cabins at camp are named for their connection to Congregational history. Some of the names are pretty straightforward: Mayflower is the name of the ship that brought the Separatists (later referred to as pilgrims) across the Atlantic Ocean. Speedwell, another ship that was used by the Separatists for a time, was not seaworthy enough to make the Atlantic crossing. It was sold in England. (The Embarkation of the Pilgrims is an amazing painting that portrays a scene on board the Speedwell while it was still at anchor in Holland. In 1918 this painting was reproduced on the reverse side of the 10,000 dollar bill.) Leiden was a place in Holland where the Separatists lived for several years. Plymouth was the place founded in 1620 by the passengers from the Mayflower. William Brewster, who studied at Cambridge University and served as an assistant to Elizabeth I s secretary of state, was jailed for his involvement with the Separatists before they fled to Holland. In Leiden, he was an elder in the Separatist congregation and worked as a printer (and printed religious pamphlets to be sold, illegally, in England). In 1620 the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth and brought with them the idea that a congregation of believers ought to be able to rule themselves. That was the beginning of the "Congregational Way. Three core values that the pilgrims sought and that today s Congregationalists embrace are, Faith, Freedom, and Fellowship. Fellowship became the name of the camp, and Faith and Freedom, names for two of its cabins.

The earliest history of Congregationalism involved many obstacles and wrong turns. The Separatists who tried to find religious freedom in Holland realized that their situation was not entirely what they had hoped for. So, they headed for the New World, seeking a place where there would be no interference with their ideals. After two miserable months at sea, the Mayflower finally reached the New World. And, they realized that they were in the wrong place: Cape Cod was located at 42 degrees north latitude. They had no legitimate basis to establish a colony there. And so, the "Mayflower Compact" was drawn up by those onboard ship to serve as the basis of their future legal and social organization: An early example of a social contract. William Brewster continued his work as church elder throughout his life at Plymouth Colony, becoming a respected religious leader and advisor to Governor William Bradford, who wrote in his diary, and as the Lord s free people, [who] joined themselves by a covenant of the Lord... to walk in all his ways... according to their best endeavors, whatsoever it should cost them... SHARE THE HARVEST This year we are beginning our winter food drive; Share the Harvest it will run through the month of November. This will help in a couple of ways. First, and most importantly, we will get a jump on the winter food need at the Utah Food Bank. In addition you will have several Sundays to remember to bring your nonperishable items to church. We will collect donated food items each Sunday during November or you can drop items by during the week while the office is open. Thank you for supporting this worthy cause.

November s Outreach Project During the month of November, we will collect donations for a local project called Shalom, Salaam, Tikkun-Olam. (Shalom and Salaam mean peace. Tikkun Olam means helping to repair the world. This is sponsored by the Council of Jewish Women in coordination with members and friends of Utah s Jewish and Muslim communities as well as schools in Utah. They collect clothing and food to distribute on Christmas Day while Christians celebrate the holiday. The recipients of the food and clothing are refugees, homebound seniors, women & children in the domestic violence shelters, and single women headed households in poverty. In 2015, they helped 1500 people. This year (2016) will be their 23th anniversary of service, and they expect to help more lonely and frail seniors, those at-risk, and new and transitioning refugees. They hope to serve 600 homebound senior citizens, 150 individuals among the working poor or in transition, single women head of households, and 115 refugee families representing 600+ children/adults from countries as diverse as Bosnia, Congo, Iraq, Liberia, Sudan, Myanmar, Somalia and Bhutan. Financial contributions will help them to purchase needed items like clothing, diapers, and food that will be prepared as a meal. Volunteers then deliver the items and the meal on Christmas Day. A few years ago, a few of us helped on Christmas Day to make deliveries to the recipients. One of our members made deliveries to the homes of some refugees. She found people sitting in cold homes without socks or adequate warm clothing who had not a stick of furniture. It was a real eye opening experience. Women's Fellowship Lunch Please join us for a pot luck lunch on Friday Nov. 18 at 12pm for good conversation, great food, and a wonderful way to get to know the women in the church. We will meet in the Fireside Room by the kitchen.

Health Tip From Your Parish Nurse What to say when Grandma returns from the kitchen without her cup of coffee and then proceeds to tell you the same story... Again. Oh, wait, that s me! Activities that work your memory a crossword puzzle, playing bridge won t hurt, but there s no good proof they help with the memory skills needed most in daily life. Charles A. Weaver, PhD, Neuroscience, Baylor University SO, HOW DO WE GET TOTAL RECALL? We all want a world where we can find our reading glasses and remember everyone s name and find our car once we leave Costco. But memory affects more than just keeping track of facts and experiences. It also helps make everyday actions feel seamless, from organizing our kitchen to typing or creating a spreadsheet. Sometimes, we need to give our memory a boost! Help Boost Your Brain Power In 6 Key Ways Strengthening memory is all about making sure your brain is working at full capacity and that s actually pretty simple. Research shows that little lifestyle habits can make a huge difference in your memory now and keep it from going downhill in the future. 1. Get Your Heart Rate Up: Aerobic exercise stimulates the creation of neurons in the hippocampus, a key area for long-term memory. The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise (brisk walking, jogging, biking) or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise. Did you know, just one hour of cardio, improves your mind for up to two hours afterwards? How do you think I can write such amazing articles? Cut and Paste? Oh, yeah. Never mind. 2. Have A Drink, Coffee, That Is: Caffeine goes beyond giving you a wake-up call. It can also enable you to store memories better. The theory is that caffeine blocks a receptor in the brain that could impair memory. The limit is 200 milligrams per day, i.e. 2 cups. 3. Keep Stress In Check: Yes, a small amount of stress gets stuff done. But, you very well know, during high stress times, you become more forgetful. Why? High levels of a hormone cortisol are produced during stressful times. Chronic stress shrinks the hippocampus, a main memory center, making remembering difficult. Exercise, have a cup of coffee, spend time with friends and loved ones. Chill. Laugh. 4. Become A Chatterbox: Turn yourself into a social butterfly. People who are more social throughout the day, tend to have better executive functions skills, which includes working memory. Even 10 minutes a day of purposeful chatter with a loved one or your local barista helps. Sometimes it takes that long for them to get your name spelled correctly.

5. Food For Thought: What you eat matters. Try working these foods into your rotation to help strengthen your memory. Salmon and walnuts for Omege-3 Fatty Acids for healthier brain tissue. Dark leafy greens, spinach, chard, kale and collards for that Vitamin K. Add berries, red wine and dark chocolate. Your brain requires a huge amount of blood flow to operate properly. These foods will help circulation. Need help in this area? Talk to Wendy. She has recipes and her own cookbook! 6. Get Your ZZZZZZ s: You need sleep and at least 7 to 9 hours every night including the weekends. Get on a schedule and stay on that sleep schedule. Go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time, even on the weekends and holidays. Your body heals and repairs itself during sleep. 1- MINUTE CHECK Look at this list for 20 seconds, then look away and write down as many words as you can remember. Thread Pin Sewing Sharp Thimble Haystack Hurt Infection Eye Pricked Don t read the following for results until you have completed the exercise above. Results: Only half of people taking the test remembered all 10 items and a great majority of people wrote down the word needle, which is not even on the list.
