2 Religious Issues in England King Henry the 8 th The Supremacy Act of The King creates the Church of England as the Official Church of England 2. He makes himself the Head of the Church so he can write the rules that will allow him to live the way he wants to

3 Protesting the King and His Corrupt Church By 1600, England was involved in a religious civil war and the people were arguing over the proper way to be a Christian Church of England vs. Protestors Protestors were divided into 2 groups Those who wanted to LEAVE the Church Separatists(Pilgrims) Those who wanted to FIX the Church Puritans Religious Discrimination was practiced against the Protestors Jobs, Housing, Attitudes

7 The Pilgrims were Religious Separatists seeking a new land where they could practice their faith on their terms and be free of discrimination The Pilgrims sought to leave behind (literally) the corruption of the Church of England and the authority of the King Settled first in the Netherlands Decided to go to America and start a colony on their terms

13 Modern Version of the Mayflower Compact We, whose names are underwritten, the loyal subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James Having undertaken, for the Glory of God, and advancements of the Christian faith and honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the Northern parts of Virginia do solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God and one another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic; for our better ordering, and preservation and shall hereby constitute such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most convenient for the general good of the colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience. In witness whereof we have subscribed our names at Cape Cod the 11th of November, in the year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King James, of England, France, and Ireland, 1620.

16 Puritans: a whole other kind of Protestant Like the Pilgrims, the Puritans left England to seek religious freedom and to create a community where their form of Christianity was the foundation for ALL aspects of communal life. Biblically Fundamental, Strict, Rigid, Serious, Uncompromising, Rulesoriented, Punitive and Intolerant of Dissent Strict Gender Roles and Class Structure Work is an obligation and extension of a person s religion
