REFLECTIONS FROM THE REV. Rev. Marijke Rossi Blessings to all as we begin the autumn season. School has started and we kick off the Sunday School year with Rally Sunday and a BBQ at church. The change of seasons is always full of excitement and change. The summer has gone by in a flash with so much going on. It has been very exciting; with the best ever camp involving our whole community to pull it off, Joanna s ordination, Phil Thom s funeral, visioning/congregational meetings, vacations, new board members and everything else that comes with warm weather. Let us continue with the visioning process, looking to the future of what we want FCC to be. I want to give a special thank you to Marge Kimes for all of the hard work she has put in, in the two months since she has been our new moderator. Besides her duties as moderator Marge is busy as one of our parish nurses and on the visioning committee. With a busy family life and all that she does for us I know we are so grateful to have Marge in these very important roles. CLARION DEADLINE October Clarion Deadline will be September 19 th you can your articles or leave them in the church office. firstcongo@qwestoffice.net CALENDAR The Calendars in this issue give information about church activities as well as building use by external groups. While any building use should be co-coordinated through the office, this should help you make appropriate plans if you need to use the church.

RALLY DAY SEPTEMBER 9TH Rally Day Picnic for all church will be right after service on September 9 TH here at First Congregational Church. Bring a friend or two for food, friends and fun. Hot and cold drinks as well as hotdogs or burgers will be provided. Bring a side, salad or dessert item to share. Moderator s Moment Marge Kimes It is hard to believe summer is over and school is starting. We have been busy in the last months and we will continue to be busy during the fall. Camp Fellowship is over and everyone who attended had a great time. We recently held the first ordination at FCC in many years. These things brought our community of faith together in worthwhile activities. This fall we will continue Envisioning our future together. Trustees are working on their projects trying to get bids/estimates for our HVAC system which has turned out to be more difficult than originally thought. They are getting ideas of how we can fix the gutters so we won t get water in our lower level and working with the Vine to review their lease and to work on maintenance issues. We will have more informational discussions about our future, asking each of you to participate, giving us your ideas and possible solutions to our current situation. Remember we need to know: What do you think we can do? What human and financial resources are needed? What are the goals of the activity? Growth? Outreach? How do we determine if the plan is a success? There is work to do and involvement is asked of all of you. WE are a community of faith that loves each other and wish to remain in this place together, worshiping God, honoring Jesus s love and working together to further our place in this city.

COFFEE HOUR HOSTS NEEDED Remember it doesn t have to be fancy. Is there someone who would be interested in just making coffee and putting out water and juice if no one signs up to do coffee hour? Would someone be interested in overseeing Coffee Hour activities? Women's Coffee Saturday - September 22 nd We will have a women's coffee at Beans and Brews on 33 rd South at 9:30am. Everyone is welcome. FROM THE OUTREACH BOARD American Red Cross - The American Red Cross will be the financial recipient for Outreach donations for the month of September. The American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton in The American Red Cross helps those affected by disasters (flood, fire, earthquakes, tornadoes etc.) They help with temporary shelter as well as food and water. In addition to disaster relief efforts, the American Red Cross collects and distributes blood donations, teaches CPR, trains people for emergency preparedness, and has first aid kits for sale. They also provide training for babysitting, CNAs, EMTs, swimming and lifeguarding. Every 2 seconds, someone needs a blood transfusion. ( 2016) They respond to nearly 70,000 disasters annually within the US. BOOK GROUP - The book group began discussing Boundless Compassion: Creating a Way of Life by Joyce Rupp on August 23rd. After skipping August 30, the group will continue on Thursdays from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Come join the group to deepen your compassion and get to know others in the group in a new way. We ll read from the book during the group, so you can either get your own copy or not, as you prefer.

The New Year (Sort of) from your Board of Deacons Phil LeHoux September marks the beginning of a new church year, in that new boards are in place, new programs are considered, and new leadership is in place. Although this changeover officially occurred with our new church year on July 1 st, the real Church Year starts with Advent. Each Advent starts a new Lectionary, a three-year rotating series of readings. Each Sunday provides a suggested set of readings and themes, appropriate for the season (i.e. Advent, Lent, etc.). FCC uses the Lectionary system, which is common to Protestant churches. (Catholics have their own Lectionary). The structure of the Lectionary provides for the development and publication of supporting resources for Calls to Worship, various prayers, and probably, with today s internet, sermons. Why do we use the Lectionary? It does ensure that we are exposed to a broad swath of the bible verses and their associated messages. Could pastors find their own themes and verses every week? Yes, though this becomes a daunting task in itself, and off-lectionary themes are used when felt appropriate. When Michael Chittum was asked about this once, he humorously responded: without the lectionary, some pastors would preach 52 sermons on the same bible verse. I bring this up to promote the concept that, with these resources, the function of Worship Liturgist need not be daunting. We have in our library suggestions and outlines that can be used directly or modified, to produce a liturgy without a major research task. Your deacons are truly appreciative of those that have taken on the Liturgist function in the past, and we invite anyone who would like to try it out to sign up. If you are thinking about it but are not sure about finding or using the available resources, please ask a deacon. We will be glad to show you how stress less preparing a liturgy can be. If you would like to sign up, you will notice that there is a signup sheet on the bulletin board, with a column for Liturgist and Worship Prep. The liturgist spots are filled at the monthly deacons meeting, to ensure coverage, but these are all fallbacks. Feel free to scratch out a name and place your own. Believe me: no offense will be taken!

Worship Prep is a bit more involved, but it really isn t that hard either (we have checklists for our worship to-do items), although it does require arriving earlier on Sunday to do the prep work. We are making this appeal, because the deacons badly need the help. The board is small, and it seems that at any time one or two members are unavailable for extended times, due to travel or other situations. Therefore, we are looking for help with the functions that still need to be filled for every Sunday s worship, regardless of the availability or size of the board of deacons. So, past deacons or occasional deacon wannabees, we hope you will find the time to help us out FALL REPLENISH THE GARDEN of GRACE DAY Saturday, September 22, 9am to Noon Meet in the Garden on the north side of our church. Our Xeriscape (dry vista) Garden needs some TLC for fall. GOALS: Clip back some plants & bushes Garden maintenance Plant some new items Add some mulch Tools and gloves are provided. Come for any amount of time you can. Refreshments with coffee and water served. Come and enjoy the sunshine and friendship. Hope to see you there! 8 Parish Nurse Health Tip New Guidelines For Colorectal Cancer Screenings And Helpful Hints For the Dreaded Colonoscopy Prep While you can t control your genes, you can take care of your body. And if you re a millennial, it will be important for you get screened for colon cancer starting when you turn 45, not 50. A recent study by the American Cancer Society found that mortality rates for colon cancer among young and middle-aged adults has been increasing since the mid- 2000s. Here are the most common types of colon cancer screenings: High-Sensitivity Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT): The stool is tested for blood. Was the gold standard used at all yearly physical exams. Has been replaced with the FIT. FIT: Fecal Immunochemical Test: This test also screens for human blood in the stool. This test can easily be done at home. It is relatively cheap and is covered by most insurance companies. This test does not give false-positive results due to food or medication. It detects only blood originating in the colon or rectum. The American Cancer Society, American College of Physicians, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable, and American Medical Association have recommended this test be administered yearly. But the FIT should not preclude one from have a Colonoscopy every 10 years. Here s Why: The kits can miss polyps, including precancerous growths that a doctor can spot and remove at the time of the colonoscopy. Or, a person may have a cancer that isn t bleeding at the time of the test, but that same tumor may bleed and be detected when the person is retested the following year. Multitarget Stool DNA Test: This test goes by the brand name Cologuard. It requires shipping an entire bowel movement to the lab. In addition to testing for blood, Cologuard looks for DNA from cancer cells scraped from the intestinal wall by feces as it passes through. Studies have shown that this type of test detects cancer with 92 percent accuracy. However, 14 percent of tests deliver false positive results far higher than the FIT test. Another concern with this test is its sheer newness. Because Cologuard only received Food and Drug Administration approval in 2014, there are no studies showing that people who choose this screening method avoid dying of colon cancer in the long-term. Studies also have not yet established the appropriate interval between testing, though the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), an independent panel of health experts that advises the government, recommends repeating the test every one to three years. Flexible Sigmoidoscopy: A flexible tube is inserted to check the rectum and last part of the colon. Should be done every five years. Colonoscopy: A flexible tube is inserted into the colon and rectum to check for anything out of the ordinary. If polyps are found, they are removed for testing. Should be done every 10 years. Helpful Hints for the Colonoscopy Prep: Think about having a Colonoscopy Party like Tom Hanks, Steve Martin, and Martin Short do. They meet at the home of which ever of them has the most bathrooms, the most candles, and the

most comfortable sofas, pillows, and duvets. Get two of your friends together, schedule your Colonoscopy and do the prep together the night before! Please don t let this test or the prep worry you. You won t feel a thing. The physician will gently give you medication so you will not have any pain during or after the exam. You want the prep to go easy-peasy? Do the following: 3-4 Days before the prep, eat only white bread, rice, pasta, well-cooked veggies without skin, fruit without skin or seeds, lean chicken, and eggs. 3-4 Days before the prep, cut back on fiber, no beans, nuts, seeds, whole grains, raw fruits and vegetables, no popcorn, no corn, broccoli, beans, or peas. Do not eat any red meat. Remember, the less you put in, the less has to come out! The day before your procedure, NO SOLID FOOD. Liquids only: Sports drinks, apple juice, white grape juice, broth, popsicles, Italian ice, Jell-O, coffee and tea. No milk or orange juice; they are not clear liquids. Nothing colored red, blue, or purple. You know what is yummy? Chicken noodle soup? You know what is not yummy? Chicken broth. Take a can of chicken noodle soup, strain out the noodles and the chunks of chicken, and add water and voilà, Bon appétit! The Prep: If you have legitimate aversion to the prep medication, don t be afraid to ask for an alternative. The one the physician uses for me is off label, but it allows me to complete the prep with out vomiting. There are several different preps that can be prescribed. Make sure the prep is really cold. If it is unflavored add Crystal Light or Kool-Aid. No carbonation. No red, blue, or purple. Use a straw. When finished drinking, suck on a lemon (no seeds) or hard candy. Have lots of reading materials, games, puzzles and movies at the ready on the couch and in the bathroom. Wear loose fitting clothes. More than a huge supple of toilet paper on hand, stock up on a supply of gentle baby wipes and a trashcan with lid. Don t flush them down the toilet, even if they say they are flushable! Use toilet paper as little as possible. Wet the baby wipes with warm water as needed. At the beginning of the process use diaper rash cream or Aquaphor to your bum anticipatorily and then after every trip to the bathroom. This will save your life. Finally, if you have a bidet in your bathroom, this will be the time to use it. If not, go to Amazon and order a hand-held squeeze bottle bidet. This too will save your bum. After a while, even the baby wipes seem to be of the devil. There are several to choose from. All of them are $10.00 and under. Don t bother with the ones you have to hook up to the water supply on your toilet. Expensive and complicated. The squeeze bottles go by many names, i.e., Brondell Go Spa Travel Bidet GS-70. Even though they are only ten dollars, read the questions answered and the reviews before choosing one. Don t forget, no drinking 2 hours before the procedure. No Butts About It.
