PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Guess who is coming to town (if you re good) best part of Christmas Season is when it is over, winter is half over. (That s my theory anyway) Certificates of Recognition from the Minister of Veteran s Affairs and the Minister of National Defense were presented, by one of our prestigious members, Brian Vernon M Gen. (Ret d). He personalized each and every presentation to all Veterans of the Korean War in attendance at our annual Veteran s Dinner. The dinner was very well attended and very well received. Lest We Forget! Again this year the Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary s) Army Cadet Corp stood guard on our Cenotaph from 1900 hrs on the 10 th of November in support of our Candle Light Vigil and maintained the guard through out the night until first light on the 11 th of November. As the Cadets must prepare to parade with Branch 17 Courtenay for Remembrance Day it was thought fitting that we prepare and serve breakfast prior to their departure, Your Entertainment Chair headed that up and all left with full stomach. Please note, we are extremely proud of these young people. Also on the 10 th with only a couple of days notice we entertained a War Songs concert to entertain seniors or anybody that wanted to come, this was proposed and performed by a local couple who named it Thank You For The Memories. At least 85 attendees showed up and expressed delight for the performance. We are planning to make this an annual concert. Did we ever have a successful Remembrance Day, long time members stated that it was the largest crowd ever; it wasn t very quiet in the Branch following either. This year was the first year we ceremoniously raised the Poppy Flag, in attendance were Veterans of the Korean War, Reps from 19 Wing, Sea, Army & Air Cadets, RCMP, the Mayor of Comox and us. We got very good PR in the local papers. Raylec Power Ltd. of Cumberland again installed the banner on Comox Hill during Poppy Week for no charge. Also new for this year is we attached a 60 cm (24 ) in diameter Poppy on the exterior wall c/w a placard below to read Lest We 3
Forget on completion of the Remembrance Day services the placard was reversed to read Thank You Following the parade as per our annual tradition a group of volunteers headed up by our 1 st Vice made their way to the Views Seniors Centre to perform a Remembrance Day Ceremony for the residents, which is always well received and appreciated. This being my last message as the President please except my well wishes to all and Legionnaires; may you all have a very Merry Christmas and the Greatest New Year Ever. Happy December Legionnaires; John Paulin, President L.A.MUSINGS By Judi Davis The meeting on Nov. 14 th had 28 members in attendance. Madam President, Eileen Paulin chaired the meeting. Two new members Kathy Short and Marion Phillips were initiated into membership. Welcome to the L.A. ladies. Reports were given, and the ladies were all busy in the past month. Remembrance Day preparations went well, and the ladies manned the tables in the Mall as well as canvassing the base. Sandwiches were made for the 11 th and hot dogs and hot chocolate for the kids after the parade. Our Treasurers computer has bitten the dust, so a new one will be purchased. And after 17 years at hard labour the dishwasher has also gone by the boards, and the Branch is looking into acquiring a new one. It doesn't owe us anything for sure, it has been very dependable over the years. Edythe Erickson was presented with her Life Membership. Edie is a very hard working and dependable member; our heartiest Congratulations go out to her. The L.A. Banquet will be held on Dec. 14 th Tickets are free to L.A. members and $10.00 for any guests. Please contact Stella to get your There will be a box for donations to the food bank that evening if you wish to bring a donation. The Bake Sale will be on Sat. Nov. 30 th at the Comox Mall from 9:00am till sold out. Any baked goods can be dropped off at the Legion hall on Friday the 29 th at 1:00pm. 4
If you can't do it that day, please take them to the mall on Sat. morning. Jean Schriener is in charge of the bake sale, so you can contact her with any The meeting was adjourned for Election of Officers, which went very well. We have someone for every position but Catering. So if anyone out there is so inclined, and loves to cook, please consider running for the position. Its not as busy as it used to be, but is still one of main sources of income and we need a chairperson for it. Our Dec. Meeting is our Christmas baking goodies night, so anyone attending, please bring a few pieces of your specialties or a few you don't bake. Flags will be posted and no uniforms. Just a more casual meeting. Next Exec. Meeting: Dec. 5 7:00pm Next Gen. Meeting: Dec. 11 7:00 pm CURATOR S CORNER By Dave Kelly Additions to our list of memorabilia etc follows: A glass framed photo of HMCS Algonquin was donated by comrade John Dyson of the Qualicum Beach Legion. An RCL ribbon from Ottawa branch #351, donated by comrade J.C. Bedard, brings our grand total to 360 different. Comrade Nils Ling donated a book to add to our library; titled The Rest of the Story According to Boyle ex CWO. About sexual harassment in the CAF, mostly by officers. The large framed exhibit of 50 different squadron plaques was donated to the branch by the Comox Air Force Museum through the efforts of comrade Irv Fraser. My thanks to Irv for helping me placing it in the Air Force room. Thanks also goes to comrade Rick Tillitson for his level headed advise. I removed all plaques that were duplicates. The next two donations are exceptional in their contents. Donated by the Wheeler family is a collection of family WW1 and WW2 memorabilia. It consists of WW1 medals (3), photos, letters, postcards etc. Of interest it also contained a box of German 5
shrapnel that was collected in their yard during WW2. Their home was about 10 miles south of London, England. I gave some of this shrapnel to the Comox Air force Museum. Comrade Rob Nortin donated the other collection. It consists of his father and uncle s memorabilia during and right after WW2. It consists of many interesting items, which are too numerous to list here, but notable items include the following: o Two original Cease Fire messages, o A copy of Personal Message From the C-IN-C, to be read to all troops on the day of victory in Europe, signed by Field Marshal B.L. Montgomery. o A dinner menu and Christmas card for Dec for the Canadian Army Overseas and held in Hoenderlo, Holland. o Various discharge and repatriation instructions for the troops o A copy of a comedy inspired letter. Very funny. I will try to put in a future log for your enjoyment. o A copy written in German titled Heil Himmler! und Hitler?. I don t know if this is an example of Allied propaganda leaflet dropped in Germany or what. I will try to get it translated and let you know. If anyone would like to see all this memorabilia, give me a call. Fairwinds...Dave. COMPUTER CORNER By Jacques Belanger I had two readers asking me to explain the difference between TO, CC and BCC when sending messages. I have covered this topic before but it does not hurt to do it again. In composition, the CC: section, short for Carbon Copy, is a method of sending an to additional addressees without inserting them into the primary To: section. While this might seem counter intuitive as it s just as easy to put an address in the To: section as the CC:, the practice is a holdover from the days of paper letters and memos where a document within an organization would be intended for a specific recipient but additional carbon copies could be sent to people 6
who needed to stay abreast of the material. That same functionality remains in the primary recipient(s) go in the To: section and anyone else who needs to be aware of the communication but is not the primary recipient goes in the CC: section. Some of you who worked in communication may remember that anyone in the TO addressee should take action and the ones in the CC addressee should take the message as information only. In composition, the BCC: section, short for Blind Carbon Copy, is a method of sending an to additional addressees without alerting the primary addressees (and the potential secondary addresses in the CC: section) that the has been shared beyond those listed on the . The practice is a holdover from the days of paper letters and memos where a document within an organization would be intended for a specific recipient but could also have additional recipients (including those whose identity, for whatever purpose, needed to remain hidden from the other recipients). In modern practices, the BCC: is seldom used as it is considered poor business etiquette to not disclose who else is participating in a conversation. The only exception to this near blanket ban on the use of the blind carbon copy is when the goal is to protect and conceal the recipient list. For example, if you wished to send an to twenty of your clients reminding them of something but did not want to give all twenty clients access to the other nineteen clients address out of respect for their privacy, using the BCC: slot would be the right choice. This is my last article of So, in closing, I would like to wish you all a safe Holiday season and good health in Send your comments &/or questions to Jacques at bccomox@gmail.com DEAR SANTA I have been good this year. OK, most of the time. Once in a while. Never mind, I ll buy my own presents. 7

STORIES FROM THE KNOWLEDGE TABLE AKA THE BS TABLE Well it is almost Christmas time again and we are looking for recipients for our gift donations for food, that we give out at this time of the year. For some people that don t know about our small donations that we give out. We have about 3 little coin banks that we have on our table. We collect coins from our members who feed our little banks all year. We also have members that give us cash donations, to help us give a little extra at this time of the year. We have been doing this for the past 4 or 5 years. We have cash and coupons on hand that amounts to $2, today the 12 th November We do have some small rules, that if you smoke or drink, that you would probably not be eligible. (None available at this table.) we have these rules because our funds would soon be depleted. We are a small little charity, who are looking for mostly a single person with a child or two. We do not turn down families that are within our rules and that are in need. If you know of anyone who fits within our rules and are really in need, please let us know. We also need to thank Quality Foods in Comox, for their support. They have been giving us $ in coupons for every $ in cash to help our charity. Thank you to all the members who have donated this year and in years past. The word went out to the membership and a drop box was set up for donations at the Branch. 10
I could not have imagined the overwhelming generosity of the members of the Branch. I cannot thank them enough for their donations, which have been distributed not just to the clients of the shelter but also to the Care-a Van to distribute to those in need. For those members who are not aware; the Care-a-Van is a mobile health unit that serves the homeless population and extremely low-income citizens (many of whom are disabled either physically or mentally) of the Comox Valley who would not otherwise have access to medical, dental and optometry services. I am very proud to be a 'new' member of Branch 160 and once again thank everyone for their continued support.
