2 P A G E HIBERNIAN CLASSIC SPLIT ROCK GOLF CLUB JUNE 10, 2017 PHOTOS COURTESY KAREN FAHY June 10th.What a beautiful day for the 2017 Hibernian Classic! 84 golfers, great sponsors and new chances for prizes! This year, everyone was out for a hole-in-one and a chance to win either a brand new Nissan Altima, courtesy of Buckeye Nissan, or $10,000.00, courtesy of Saint Gabriel Radio! There was even a Beat-The-Pro contest. Sadly, no one went home with the car or the cash. But lots of fun to try! Back at Tara Hall, dinner was served by Queen s Table, and everyone could order their choice from the menu. The Fahy Foursome shot the low score of 60, and won the tournament, followed by the McGinnis Team with a 61. From the funds raised, $1, will be donated to our designated charity, the Dead Theologians Society. The Society, under the guidance of our brother Eddie Cotter, Jr., is re-introducing the Catholic Faith to the young people of Northern Ireland, whose knowledge of the Church had been neglected. Also, an additional $1, will be donated in the cause for Homeless Military Veterans. A big thank-you goes out to Chris Konik, Rich and Karen Finn, Jessica Tilley, Danny Fitzgerald, Pat Fahy and all our Volunteers at the course and at Tara Hall. Lots of great work equaled a very successful day!

6 LATE HIBERNIAN JIMmy CLARK HONORED AT 2017 SHAMROCK CLUB FLAG DAY CEREMONY In an always-stirring ceremony, the Shamrock Club Flag Day Program was dedicated to Jimmy Clark. Jimmy was a decorated Vietnam Veteran and a loyal SCC member and Hibernian Brother. The Shamrock Club Pipes and Drums played for the ceremony, and the Ladies of Longford sang the Nation Anthem. Brother Tom Byrne emceed the program, with presentations from Shamrock Club President Mary Grady Strickland and Division 1 President Ed Norris. State Senator Jim Hughes was the keynote Speaker. An Honor Guard from American Legion Southway Post 104 performed the Flag Ceremony, and the Colors were presented to Jimmy s brother Bill Clark.

7 JAMES HERMAN CLARK James Herman Clark was born the oldest of eleven children on the 21st of March On March 19, 1984,shortly before his 37th birthday, James passed away due to an unrecoverable brain aneurism. A life cut way too short but one full of courage, determination, enthusiasm, conviction, adventure, generosity and an most of all unwavering faith in God. Jimmy, as he was affectionately known grew up like so many young boys in the neighborhood attending Immaculate Conception Elementary and Bishop Watterson High School. At 19 he was drafted into the United States Army along with many other young men of his generation. After competing Advance Infantry training, he joined The 1st Air Cavalry Division. He was deployed to South Vietnam in December 1966 and served valiantly until March 1967, when he stepped on a land mine while on a mission near the town of An Khe. The result was the complete loss of one eye and near total loss of his other. Jimmy also sustained injury to his leg, ankle and, even more damaging, were the shrapnel fragments which became permanently lodged in his brain. Jimmy spent a few months in a hospital in Japan prior to returning to the States. He spent 18 months at Walter Reed Army Hospital recovering from his injuries of which the Army physicians determined he would never walk again. He returned to His family and friends and against all odds thru his unfathomable determination, conviction and faith Jimmy went from a wheel chair to a cane to throwing the cane in the trash. There was still a slight limp, he was deemed legally blind, and he required daily medications. Despite these physical limitations and the sometimes emotional frustrations which bubbled occasionally to the surface, he never complained. He once told a good friend "I might as well not be alive if I'm going to be bitter". He enrolled in college, and while he never obtained a degree due to his severely limited eye sight, he filled his life with people and causes, particularly the cause for a United Ireland. He traveled more miles, skied more hills and made more friends than most of us will in our lifetime. Jimmy was a very active member of both the AOH and the Shamrock Club till the day he passed. His devotion to a free United Ireland was a great passion of his. He visited Ireland numerous times, making friends and promoting a free Ireland as Chairman of Irish Northern Aid Columbus. His family and friends continually marveled at the tenacity with which he approached all sports as a fan and a participant. Whether it was a game of touch football, golf, ice hockey (yes he was a goalie), or soccer where he played for the Shamrock Club he gave 110% of what his war torn body would allow. Jimmy's passion for life, sports and all things Ireland were fostered by his love for people and from that love came fierce loyalty and generous compassion. After his death, he was remembered by a dear friend, "We are all richer in love, spirit and knowledge for having known Jim. I will always remember him in the words he sighed to a letter he sent to his friend since childhood" 'So long for now and keep smiling, because I am. Sincerely, Yours in Christ, Jim'

11 On Thursday, July 6th, The Patrick Pearse Division hosted the last stop of a tour of Irish Pubs, sponsored by the Columbus Landmarks Foundation. The tour, which also paid us a visit last year, started at Claddagh Pub, followed by the Shamrock Club. LAOH Past President Lisa O Connell-Paccioretti and Doreen Uhas Sauer of Landmarks led the tour. After the group was welcomed at Tara Hall, our historian Mike Finn provided a history of the Irish in Central Ohio, as well as the Hibernians in Columbus, past and present. Our visitors asked a lot of great questions about the AOH, changes in the Central Ohio Irish community over the years, and the Hall itself. Members of the group toured our library and Pearse s Cottage, and Worthy President Ed Norris and Past President Jim Wade gave a mini-concert. The group enjoyed our portion of their evening, and they are welcome back any time. Thanks to everyone who helped make it a fun and informative evening.
