1 1030 City Park Avenue Portsmouth, VA Tel: Office Phone Hours: M-TH A family of churches cooperating in the spirit of the Great Commandment to carry out the Great Commission. PORTSMOUTH BAPTIST ASSOCIATION March 2018 MISSIONARY GLEANINGS FANTASTIC MINISTRY OPENING-FACILITY COMMITTEE We have openings on the PBA Facility Committee. Persons on the committee oversee both the ministry of the Block Party Trailer and the equipment used by the Disaster Response Team, as well as the property used by the PBA Office. Here are some of the qualifications being sought: Able bodied will have to pull out equipment and inspect after each rental of the PBA Block Party Trailer Be willing to be available for questions or concerns when a church rents the trailer. Please let Leslie know of your interest in serving to revitalize this ministry. Lisa Kidd, our PBA Intern will be working with this committee. NEVER SEEN THIS HAPPEN BEFORE In Nearly 6 decades of involvement with benevolent causes, I have never experienced a single recipient who repaid the cost of goods provided by the churches to them---until now. Last fall a retired Christian School teacher on disability applied to have her window replaced through Operation Inasmuch The request was denied. However, a skilled craftsman from one of our PBA Churches agreed to rebuild it using about $200 in materials from the OIAM Budget. Recently, that individual, Miss Sandra Taylor informed me that Friends of Sandra Taylor were planning a gospel sing to raise money. After expenses are met she wants the first $200 to repay the OIAM 2017 Budget. Also, she wants to go beyond that. Of the next money to come in she wants to share dollar for dollar up to $200 more dollars to go to OIAM MY SUGGESTIONS TO OIAM LEADERSHIP Simplify fundraising by eliminating Chili s Buy $1500 worth of Auto Bell Cards ASAP Participate with Friends of Sandra Taylor to earn a potential of $400 Do Applebee s Pancake Breakfast in August. Purse about $1,000 -Dr. John Carpenter, Associational Missionary

3 From The Shores of Emily Green Dear Ladies and Gentlemen of the Portsmouth Baptist Association, Portsmouth Seafarers Center A Division of Tidewater Transportation Ministries Inc. From TTM Chaplain Mike Smith I climb the tall steep gang board with a bag of hats and scarves knitted by the ladies of the PBA. Behind me is Dr. Carpenter carrying bags of candy. As we reach the deck we are greeted by a smiling Philippine seaman, who checks our TWIC cards and then escorts us to the Captain s office. There we are greeted by the 1 st Officer, a Turkish gentleman with a warm smile. We meet Will Talley, who works for the Maritime Administration. He tells us how pleased he is that Christian men take the time to visit his ships and offer the seamen spiritual guidance and gifts without charge. The Captain (also Turkish) gives us a warm welcome and offers a glass of water. It is such a rewarding experience to speak to seamen of all nationalities and share gifts, smiles, and conversation with them in Jesus name. TTM would invite those interested to join us sometime and be an international missionary for a day. ODU Baptist Collegiate Ministry ODU Baptist Collegiate Ministry needs your help! They are looking for Churches in our Association to help bring home cooked meals (main dish, side, dessert and drinks) for Students on Wednesday evenings. The group size is about 30 and they serve dinner around 6:15pm (drop off time is usually around 5:45). If this is something your church can help with please contact: Nigel Anderson at or him at odubcm@gmail.com Our residents are enjoying a great deal of entertainment this month. St Valentine s Day was celebrated at The Olive Garden with a nice lunch out for several residents. The Day prior The Residents were blessed by The Grove Park Foot Ministry as well as a Birthday party sponsored by The Ladies of Fairview Heights. There will be musical entertainment from Martha and Dwayne Dunn as well as Singing with Lee Smith. We also have a Valentine s Day program with The St Andrews children. We are happy that we have had a brand new microphone donated by an anonymous donor, as well as a DVD player and discs donated from Sonja Gray of The WMU. Every Saturday Westhaven Outreach Bible Study will be held in The Parkview Room. And worship Services on Sunday s by Rivershore Baptist Church, Westhaven Baptist Church, Jackson Memorial Baptist Church and Port Norfolk Baptist Church. We are proud to announce That Emily Green Shores has been chosen to Pilot the first Virtual Dementia training program in Portsmouth. Experts agree that education and proper training are the best ways to help caregivers to provide better care. During training facilitators will guide our staff through common everyday tasks and exercise while outfitted with patented devices that alter their senses. This training enables our caregivers to experience for themselves the physical and cognitive challenges those with dementia face. During the course of marketing Emily Green Shores our Administrator will be sharing our Signature Bread Pudding and the great news about our loving and respected community and its affordability. In His Service, JoAnne Harrell LPN:
