1 A Country Church with an Open Door February 2011 Newsletter February is the month when we remember those closest to our hearts on Valentine s Day. While St. Valentine s Day is not an official observance within the church, the legend of the saint is a good one to remember. Valentine was a Christian priest in Rome who taught the dogma of the church during the third century, when Christianity was still considered by Rome as an outlaw religion. One of the teachings stressed by Valentine was the importance of marriage for those men and women who desired to live together. Marriage, however, had been forbidden by Claudius II, who believed that family ties made soldiers less willing to fight. As a result of Valentine s persistent teaching, he was jailed, tried, and convicted of promoting dogma contrary to government law --- a capital offense. He was executed on February 14 for his direct violation of an edict by Emperor Claudius. On the eve of his execution, Valentine sent a note to the jailer s daughter who had befriended him. In it he thanked her for her care and kindness, and signed it: Your Valentine. Thus was born modern practice of exchanging notes to our special valentines on February 14. Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians, chapter 13 says, Love is patient and kind; it is not jealous or conceited or proud; love is not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable; love does not keep a record of wrongs; love is not happy with evil, but is happy with the truth. Love never gives up; and its faith, hope, and patience never fail. Love is eternal. These words speak to us about our relationships to others and about God s relationship to us. Try substituting God every time the word love should be used in that scripture and see what happens. God is love and His love for us is eternal. Richard Bach is credited with saying, Real love stories never have endings. This is true in our love story with God. We have been promised an eternal life with God in His heavenly kingdom. And God has given us a special valentine His Son, Jesus. For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that all who believe in Him will not die but have eternal life. Sunday School Classes are split into three age groups: Nursery thru 1 st grade, 2 nd thru 6 th grade, and the Youth Class, 7 th thru 12 th grade. We have some great teachers and some awesome new lessons planned! This month, the younger children will be studying Matthew and John and learning about Jesus choosing his helpers and loving the children. The 2 nd thru 6 th grader s lessons will be about the book of Exodus, studying about Moses, the Burning Bush, Crossing the Red Sea. We would love to see you there as we study God s word together! First Sunday Fellowship: On the first Sunday of each month, the congregation is invited to meet in the Fellowship Hall for refreshments before the worship service. Please join us! The host are: February Sunday School March UCC Women April Council May Women s Fellowship Sunday School starts at 9:00 am. The children will sing the last Sunday of each month. The last Sunday of each month we will be collecting food/monetary donations for the Food Pantry. Bring your food to the church anytime.

Friedens Church Continues its Mission: "Adopt a Soldier" We are still collecting donations to send to the soldiers abroad. We sent out seven boxes to Afghanistan for the holidays, and we are preparing to send out the next shipment. We urge you to help us continue this mission for as long as we can, as they need our constant support and encouragement. A list of needed items can be found in the foyer at the church, or if you have any questions, or would like to make a monetary donation, please see or call Kim Bosse at the church office, Blood Drive Dates May 29 July 24 November 20 Newsletter Deadline! 4 Annual Chili/Chicken Stew Supper Friday - February 4, 2011 The Women s Fellowship and Sunday School will be hosting their annual supper on February 4, 2011 at the Friedens Activities Center Serving 5:00 pm-7:30 pm Tickets are available at the door $7.00 for adults and children 6-12 years $3.00 This will include drink and dessert. Please remember to look back at your last newsletter for the work list. Thanks! Take out dinner February 6 The UCC Women will have their annual take out dinner on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 6 th. The chicken BBQ dinner will be following worship 11:15 am 12:00 pm The meal will consist of ½ BBQ chicken, twice-baked potatoes, green beans, and homemade dessert. Tickets are $8.00 from any member of the UCC Women by January 31 st. Thanks!!
