Although we do not have much information, we did receive correspondence from Nancy Westling that her mother, Arlene Westling died on July 15, Arlene was the daughter of Rev. Bowering who served our church many years ago and passed away during his appointment here. His son. Jack, who was in Drew University studying for the ministry took over his position in our church on a temporary basis. Arlene married Ed Westling whom she met during the appointment of Rev. Bowering to our church. Ed was the son of Alice and Ed Westling, Sr. who were active and long-time members of our church. Ed, Jr. died a long time ago and I remember what a handsome young man he was. Ever since they moved to Pine Beach, N. J. they received the Messenger which Arlene continued to receive after Ed s death. That newsletter was something Arlene looked forward to each month, and now her daughter would like to continue receiving it. Her address is 2005 Doolittle Drive, Bridgewater, N. J I know there are still some members here that would remember the Westlings. For myself I remember, with love, Alice Westling kindness to me. My husband sang every Sunday in the choir and so I would bring our 4 children to church with me (they went to Sunday School as they got older) It was not easy for me to control 4 children alone and each week Alice would say give me one or two children and I did!! And I never forgot that help she gave me. We extend our deepest sympathy to Nancy and the Westling family on the loss of Arlene. THE TASK AHEAD OF US IS NEVER AS GREAT AS THE POWER BEHIND US.

5 SUNDAY SCHOOL Sunday School stared for the Fall season on September 13 th at 9:30 a.m. with the children rotating as Acolytes bringing the candles at the beginning of the service and to the world at the end of the service. They stayed for the worship service until the reading of the Gospel Lesson and then went downstairs to their classroom. The teachers hope that the children will begin to do some of the readings during the service. With some help from Rev. Yi, they hope to put together a smaller bulletin with the readings of the day, so the children can follow the service better. The children also will be helping with planting some flowers in the Memorial Garden. We are excited about the children and teachers, Megan Stamer, Jackie Valdez and Teesha Prezeau and their commitment and dedication to our Sunday School. STEWARDSHIP Gertrude Baldwin has announced the dates for the annual Stewardship program. The program reminds us of the commitment we made when we joined the church-the giving of our time, talents and treasures. We need them all time to serve God and our church, talents - to share our skills God has blessed us with, and treasures - which includes financial support for the church and its programs. A letter, with a pledge card, will be going out to our congregation from the Stewardship Committee in the near future and we urge all to read it carefully and consider your share of supporting the church that serves us all. DATES TO REMEMBER October 11 Kick-Off Sunday October 18 Speaker, Rich Henderson October 25 Dedication of Pledge Cards Coffee Hour to follow in Alders gate Hall ****************************************** FAITH IN ACTION The Faith in Action group which meets every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. for prayer, singing, discussion, Bible Study and light refreshments is going strong! They are pleased to have Rev. Yi join them when her schedule allows. If she cannot attend Andrea or Heleia leads them. Our church will have a table in front of our church during the September to Remember program sponsored by the City of Linden. We will be giving out bottles of water and fliers about our church, including the Faith in Action program. If you can help, please speak to Carolyn Franz. ****************************************** SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTED Sept. 13, 2015 The annual Dianne Long, Gregg Carhart and Bill Steiniger scholarship was presented to Chris Beyer On Sunday, September 13 th during our worship service. Caroline and Tom Long, Bob Carhart representing his brother, Norman who is not well, and Doris Stamer has been asked by Ethel Steiniger to represent the Steiniger family were all present. We all remember Dianne Long, Gregg Carhart and Bill Steiniger and the scholarship presented in memory of them will go on long after we are gone. Over the many past years, the scholarship has helped a large number of young adults from our church to further their education and we appreciate the Long, Carhart and Steiniger families for remembering their loved ones in a way that has encouraged young people to continue their education. We thank them and congratulate Chris Beyer for receiving the scholarship this year.
6 is with her loved ones and in the arms of the Lord who was with her always. We are sure he is telling that he guided her throughout her life and now she can rest. OUR BUSY CHURCH MUSICIAN/CAREGIVER It is with sadness that we report the death of Leona Parker who died on September 7, 2015 at Genesis Eldercare Center in Westfield. Although she had not left her home in over a year, she was always cheerful and happy when we talked on the telephone or members visited her. Not too long ago, the United Methodist Women visited her for over an hour since she could not get out, we came to her. She had served for many years as the secretary and dedicated member of our organization. As of September, 2015, we will have two churches sharing our facilities. The 7 th Day s will meet every Saturday in Aldersgate Hall, a couple Saturdays from 9 to 12 and a couple from 9 to 6. If we need to use the Hall or if we have a rental, the church will meet in Epworth Hall for that day. We will notify them in advance so they can plan accordingly. On Sundays, at 12:30 p.m. after our church service, the Saints of God Ministries will use our sanctuary for their service. If you see them, please welcome them all to our church. MESSENGER INFORMATION Please give the following information to Doris Henel, the editor of the Messenger ( or Djhenel@aol.com) 1. If your birthday, or a member of your family, is not listed in the monthly Messenger, please see that she receives it. 2. If you have an address and are not receiving the Messenger that way, but it is being mailed to you, please give us the information. It will save us lots of time and money. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the funeral viewing on Friday, September 18 th at Werson Funeral Home from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and the Funeral Service in the United Methodist Church in Linden on Saturday September 19, 2015 at 10:00 p.m. Interment will be at Rosedale Memorial Park followed by a luncheon in Aldersgate Hall for all those attending the service. We will miss Leona so much. Her beautiful voice will echo through our sanctuary forever, never to be forgotten. And those people that she cared for so much, and took care of, will always remember her. Leona gave so much to everyone hers was certainly a life well lived and worthwhile. 7 PICTURES FROM THE SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATION BITS AND PIECES Since Ethel Steiniger s two daughters now live in Bayhead and Pt. Pleasant Beach, she is not too near them for help when it is needed although they take very good care of their mother. They worry, too, that they are a distance away if there was a real emergency. She knew she would have to make a change soon and Nancy and Carol have been helping her. She has tentative plans to move to Sunnyside Manor in Wall Township which will be a short distance from her girls. There is still a lot to do. A house she has lived in ever since she has been in Linden that has to be emptied and sold. Her family will take care of this Ethel just has to decide what to keep and what to get rid of, and that s not easy to do, when there are so many memories attached to everything. We will let you know how things are progressing as time goes on. What a wonderful surprise! On September 13 th, the day the scholarship was presented by Caroline & Tom Long, Bob Carhart for brother Norman, and Doris Stamer for the Steiniger family to Chris Beyer, I turned around and who do I see?? Joy Hinko and son Michael, daughter, Lisa and husband Carlos, who recently became a U.S citizen and graduated from college this summer with a B.S. in Environmental Sciences and their son, Christian. It was wonderful to see them and to know that they are all doing well. Someone else we have not seen in awhile Lois and Ed Burns. They both have some health problems, and Ed s have been very serious. They both look great now and we were so happy to see them and so were lots of other people who came over to greet them. It felt like old times with also Caroline and Tom Long with us for the presentation. Tom spoke about his years in our church and how much this church means to them both even though they can t get here too often. It was a great day and brought back so many memories from years long past. MaryJane Koslosky left on September 13 th for about a month s visit and will be touring Kentucky with friends. That s beautiful horse country and much to see and we know they will enjoy the visit. Bob Carhart, Tom & Caroline Long & Chris Beyer (and Doris Stamer for the Steinigers) enjoy the refreshments after the scholarship was presented By this time you will have received the letter from MaryJane Koslosky Finance Chairperson and the entire Finance Committee. Please read it carefully and contribute what you can to get us through this difficult period. We hope our new Building Blocks Day Care will help solve some of our financial problems along with our rentals.
