The year is drawing to a close and the next one promises to be a great one, so let s start the ball rolling now. On Monday, October 25th at 7PM, we ll hold a Fellowcraft degree for EA Chris Acheson. 2 Andrew Anderson, DDGM District #9 Fiat Lux From the Arizona Grand Lodge District #9 Deputy Grand Master For many lodges, the bylaws direct the lodge to hold elections and appointments of officers for the coming year in the month of November. With this in mind, I thought I would share some thoughts with you about white balls and black cubes based upon a book entitled Facts, Fables and Fantasies by WM Adrian Brown. Much has been written over the years about why cubes and balls are black and white, and the reason for the shapes. Black and white are extreme opposites and to some folks are not considered colors but shades. If a brother is vision impaired or blind, the ball verses the cube enables him to ballot without fear of making a mistake. In the early colonial days, lighting in lodges was, at best, minimum with usage of candles or light from a window or from the moon. Thus, those lodges that became full moon lodges. Why a secret ballot? In casting your ballot as a Freemason it s your duty to screen every candidate who presents an application for membership, and in this light, a Mason may have to cast a negative vote black cube for a relative, an employer, his own minister or as even a private for his general. Once the ballot is taken there is no further discussion; no member questions another s decision. Words to the wise. The Arizona Military Degree Team will perform the Fellowcraft Degree on October 16th at Huachuca Lodge #53 at 10AM. Coffee and vitamins before with lunch following the degree. The team is unique and performs in the military uniforms of the each individual s service. Make sure it s on your calendar as a must see. Have you ever noticed the symbol of the Stewards jewels? It s the horn of plenty or the cornucopia which is the symbol of plenty or abundance of brotherhood, good times and refreshments. Do you know the correct position of the Stewards symbols when placed in the stands next to the Senior and Junior Steward? Check it out or ask one of the Stewards. I am sure they are more than willing to talk about their places in the lodge. Brothers, it s inherent upon all of us to protect the integrity of the approved ritual that we use in lodge. It s important not to add to or take away from the actual wording that is used for every aspect of our work. It establishes what can be said and the way we can do things. This is what makes Masonry what it is. Ritual is one of the most important elements that we have and it separates us and makes us distinct from other organizations. Talking about following established rules; have you read your lodge s bylaws lately? Why? Because they are important and, more importantly, it s good to refresh your memory. The bylaws are the rules by which we operate as we manage the important business of the lodge. It s important for the lodge trustees, the lodge officers and every brother to know them. If you haven't read them lately, please do so and review them frequently. It s surprising how each time I review them I learn something new. You will too. Andrew Anderson DDGM, District #9 Fiat Lux
3 In the West Brethren, It certainly has been a pleasure serving as Senior Warden during my time in the West and I look forward to the continued friendship and brotherly love of the lodge, in whatever capacity is appropriate. My offices and training in Masonry have led me to this point and in the event you do me the honor of voting me into the East as Worshipful Master for the upcoming year of 2011, I d like to let you know whom I d propose to appoint as officers to join me in carrying out our Masonic duties. Those who ve agreed to serve thus far are as follows: Pete Criscuolo, Senior Warden Tyler Bill Toliver, PM, Marshall Dale Waldron (tentatively), Junior Steward Gene Bull, PM, Senior Steward Art Montgomery, Junior Deacon Frank Belulardo, Jr., Senior Deacon Paul Weishaupt, and Chaplain Johnny Wagener, PM. I ve also talked to following brothers for the elected officers and offer them to you for consideration in the following capacities: Senior Warden - Fred Sandlin, Junior Warden Kenn Barrett, PM, Treasurer Dave Santor, PM, and Secretary Andy Anderson, PM. I d like to invite the above named Brothers to serve in these positions during our October 4th Move Up Night which will feature a guest visit by several Masons from Britain and also a visit from William A. Garrard, our seated Arizona Junior Grand Deacon. We ll conduct business that night on the First Degree. My vision for the coming year is for us to continue to prosper as Masons and individuals within the context of a town known the world over for its rich history and continued vibrancy. I plan to continue along the path of the past distinguished Worshipful Masters who have promoted Masonry in the community within which we live. As your Worshipful Master, I plan to emphasize and develop a budget for the year that will be realistic in what to expect in terms of expenses; to promote our unique Masonic history in Tombstone via our History Committee which would be ably chaired by Frank Belluardo and to finalize and publish an update to our historical brochure; to enhance the fellowship opportunities of the lodge with family-friendly events; and to ensure our lodge room and furnishings are well-maintained within the approved budget. Most of all, I hope that we continue to improve ourselves in Masonry in unity with our Brethren, at peace with all mankind, sharing our abundance with those who have been less fortunate than ourselves. Pete Criscuolo Senior Warden

Above, English Brethren, their spouses and brothers of King Solomon #5 pose in front of the Schieffelin Hall.
5 Wyatt s Walk-down Kenn Barrett (Professional Actor) Tombstone is preparing for Helldorado, our biggest affair of the year held annually since 1929; the weekend festival takes place on the third weekend in October. A parade, gunfight re-enactments, costume contests, and a historic (or notso-historic) comedy melodrama play about Tombstone s early days are just some of the features of this grand event. People from all over the world come to Cowboy Mecca to wear their 1880 s period attire, walk the boardwalks and dusty streets, and to step back in time to those thrilling days of yester-year. When you come to Tombstone to walk or ride in the Helldorado parade on Sunday, October 17 th, why not make a day of it? Stay for lunch or dinner, walk around town, visit the Old Courthouse and Western Heritage Museums, catch the gun show at the old high school gym on 6 th and Allen Streets where you can also buy guns, antiques and jewelry. Kenn Wyatt Earp Barrett Best of all, come watch me perform at the O.K. Corral at 2 P.M., or just hang out in your period or Western attire and add to the ambience of the whole affair. 6 Wyatt s Walk-down (continued from page 5) Historic Schieffelin Hall, our lodge s home since 1881, will be the site of the Tombstone Repertory Company s Fall 2010 performance season. It opens on Saturday, October 9 th with the presentation of Dr. Clantonstein and the Boothill Body Shop, by Robert Hoskin. Each Spring and Fall, the company presents a month-long season of weekend performances of comedy melodramas or musicals. The current original production follows the familiar Frankenstein theme, and is just in time for Halloween, when the final performance will be presented at an October 31 st matinee at 3PM. This comedy melodrama chronicles the events following the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Most Old West historians and Western movie buffs know about this most-famous of Western gunfights, where Wyatt Earp, his brothers Virgil and Morgan, and Doc Holliday faced Ike Clanton and his outlaw gang. Many know about the bloody aftermath when Ike Clanton hired gunmen to attempt to assassinate Wyatt Earp and his brothers. But few historians know that Ike Clanton sent for a distant relative from the Old Country- Transylvania. His cousin, Dr. Clantonstein, arrives and offers to build Ike a gunfighter from spare parts harvested from Boothill. But the monster he creates may be more trouble than it s worth. Hilarity ensues as historic, and not-sohistoric, characters interact with each other in the West s most famous graveyard, Tombstone s Boothill, and the Lucky Cuss Saloon. The play is directed by yours truly, who also plays Wyatt Earp. Another easy role-choice was the casting Lilla DeLuca Barrett, my wife, as Wyatt s ladyfriend and future wife, Josie. Wyatt Earp (Kenn Barrett) holds the Monster (Bruce Bluemel) at gunpoint as Ike Clanton (Bruce Hamilton) tries to reason with him. Bar Girl (Claudia Bluemel) and Fritz (Ty King) look on in shock and awe. Robert Hoskin s plays have been performed for years in Tombstone and elsewhere. His recent plays include The Tombstone Heiress, Strangecoach, The Mediocre Seven, True Wimps, and The Orps of Tombstone. Dr. Clantonstein and the Boothill Body Shop is Robert Hoskin s last play. He recently passed away in Tombstone on September 7 th. All the performances are lovingly dedicated to his memory. The play is performed at Schieffelin Hall, located at Fremont and 4 th Streets in Tombstone. Performance dates are Saturday and Sunday, October 9th and 10th, Saturday, October 16th (Helldorado), Saturday, October 23rd, Saturday and Sunday, October 30th and 31st. Saturday evening performances are at 7 pm. Sunday afternoon matinees are at 3 pm. Tickets are $8, and are available at the door one-half hour before show time. Come out and support this Tombstone community event. The following Masons saw my Masonic watch fob during the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, and identified themselves to me. I then gave them a tour of or lodge room: Gwyn Joseph of Lodge Padstow #799 in Bankstown, NSW Australia; Claus Holm of Absalow Lodge in Copenhagen, Denmark; and Peter Lippert, PM, of Nelson C. Bledsoe Lodge #74, in Tucson.

8 The Streets of Tombstone Walk-down to Oblivion The streets of this old mining town are filled with people. Most of them living, but a lot of them are dead. I have been walking these streets now for over a century and a quarter. When I got into town, it had over 4,000 people in it and it was growing fast. It was the largest town in the territory and the only ones bigger in the west were St Louis and San Francisco. The streets sprouted saloons, brothels and all manner of businesses both legal and illegal faster than the desert grows cactus and rattlers. Anything could be had, provided by ladies of the night, gamblers, thieves, rustlers, rogues and other rejects from hell. At any time of the day, someone was carousing with the soiled doves, getting drunk, being swindled, bamboozled, robbed, shot or killed. My kind of town. Like many immigrants looking for a new life and to strike it rich I headed for Tombstone in the winter of 1882 to work the mines. In 86, a cave-in crushed the life out me. That s when things got interesting. My name is Colm Heally and I eternally walk the streets of Tombstone with others just like me, and there are more than you can imagine. I meet them all on my strolls; somewhere, some when. There s a miner like me George Buford who hangs about at his old house on Stafford Street, now a B&B. George fell in love with an 18-yr-old by the name of Cleopatra Evan. Everyone called her Petra. Trouble was, she was sweet on some cowboy. George didn t take it too well. He lost his mind; then he lost control. He got his six-shooter and used up five before he was done. He put four into Petra and one in himself. Petra survived. George didn t. Now he roams around the house ringing doorbells, knocking things about, turning on the lights, touching the guests hair and hoping Petra will forgive him. Fat chance. But, I was smarter than George. I focused my attention, not on one, but on all the sweet things at the Bird Cage Theatre on Allen Street. They held some famous plays at that Theatre, but the best performances I attended was upstairs in the cribs. It was certainly a great place to go for all-around entertainment. In 1882, the New York Times said it, is the wildest, wickedest night spot between Basin Street and the Barbary Coast". You could drink, gamble and visit one of the ladies in any of the 14 cribs at the top of the stairs, all in one evening. Things could get rowdy and even deadly. 26 people were killed there and if you look close you can see 120-plus bullet holes in the place. There are many spirits in the place. Some died there and others stay because they love it and don t want to leave. They laugh and frolic about making the rafters ring with song and laughter. One of the owner s makes
9 his rounds, ensuring business is still going well. When you leave, you ll see a familiar spirit; Marshal Fred White. He died at the hands of a no-count cowboy, Curly Bill Brocius, the year before I arrived. The cowboys were drunk and shootin up the town. Marshal tried to calm them down and got one in the groin for his reward. Now, he patrols the streets, continually keeping the peace. Another place my kind gather is the Crystal Palace Saloon. Big Nose Kate swishes through now and then. She likes the place, and she isn t alone. It is crowded with cowboys, miners and saloon-rats talking, laughing, drinking and playing cards. Some of the drunkin sots even knock over the beer cases in the cellar now and then; like they haven t had enough already. After that, they head to Kate s place across the street to do the same. There s a woman, in a white dress, walking Allen Street, not saying much at all. To tell the truth, I have difficulty telling myself who or what she is. Some of the living believe she s a madam who was hanged and now stalks her executioners, but from my point of view she s just another one of the unfortunate ones. A young mother whose baby died of the fever and she was so devastated that she took her life. She traded her living body for a dead one, but continues to pine away for her lost child on the streets. There are many more like her. Ones who died, not of violence or in the act of wasting a good life, but of the desperate and dangerous times in which they lived. Twice, in June 81 and in May 82, the town and its people felt the searing tongues of flame. From one end of town to the other, dozens of people were burned to death. The poor souls stumble through streets reeking of smoke, burnt flesh and moaning in their perpetual agony. Of course, for all of Tombstone s glorious past and bright future, the fight at the O.K. Corral between the Earps and the cowboys in October 81 dominates the scene. The Earps and Doc Holliday were standing as the smoke cleared. Billy Clanton along with Frank and Tom McLaury weren t. Ike Clanton, Billy Claiborne and Wes Fuller lived to see another day, but, in the end, they are still here. Billy rises amid an eerie mist out of his grave and heads to join the others at the corral. Seething in anger and with guns drawn, they wait for the Earps. Their hate, at times, turns the air cold in the corral. The only Earp brother who came back is Virgil. Wyatt and Morgan moved on. Doc we don t know where he is, but Virgil for whatever reason, dons his black frock coat and hat, and heads up 5th Street to Allen. Many have seen him but he doesn t seem to care. He just keeps walking. The last place I enjoy walking is Boot Hill. Maybe it s because I never got a plot with a name on it or a decent burial. Sometimes, I go just to watch the 250 spirits there. Most of the them died violently, but they still enjoy a rare sense of humor. They like to pop-up as tourists take their photos, make weird noises they think are eerie and produce flickering lights. All the stuff of immature ghosts. As for me, I ll keep visiting the haunts of Tombstone; I still got things to work out. Until I do, you can find me; like the town too tough to die. Afterword: Colm Heally never existed on any level of being and does not represent any person; living or dead. As for the others, you can decide when you come to Tombstone and find out for yourself.
