3 The Good News Kilmarnock Baptist Church On Watch Our annual house building vacations By Lynnie McCrobie June 2013 In this Issue Back cover: Serving in June June Birthdays Thought for the Month Talent show House-building vacations P. 1 A Mouse in the Corner P. 3 WMU and Mission News P.5 VBS announcement P. 7 In 2002, Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity spoke at Grace Episcopal church. I came home from that day and told Winnie I had heard someone speak who really moved my soul. I didn t know where this was going to lead but I felt a real calling to follow him. So in June 2003 I found myself in Valdosta, GA one of many volunteers building 27 new houses as part of Habitat for Humanity. In 2004 I traveled to Veracruz, Mexico. My roommate from Georgia, a nice attorney from California was again my roommate. We were building 75 houses out of block that week. In January 2005 Millard Fuller was fired by the HFH Board. He started a new housing ministry based on original biblical principles and the Fuller Center for Housing was born. June 2005 Winnie was able to go with me for the first time. He and I traveled to Detroit to participate in the HFH Jimmy Carter Blitz build In September, by myself again because Winnie was back in school, I was in the Allendale community of Shreveport Louisiana. This time with the new Fuller Center for Housing. The group is smaller and so was the number of houses but the Lord s work was present in all we did. I met a great new friend that year, Linda Spofford. Linda had never been to a build before so it was all new to her and she took to it with great enthusiasm. Linda later became the Vice President of the Fuller Center taking the lead role in charge of communications. A revolutionary new concept was conceived by Millard called Greater Blessing Box. Based on Jesus s teaching that it is more blessed to give than to receive, he believed that a blessing should not be denied to those of extremely limited incomes. Homeowners critically needing basic renovations of $5,000 or less would not be legally required to repay. The Greater Blessing Box is filled with envelopes and given to each homeowner when the renovations are complete. They are asked to send whatever they can afford so that they can receive the greater blessing by helping finance renovations for another needy homeowner Winnie being newly retired was able to go with me and we traveled to Shreveport where more houses were built and renovated. Maybe people had relocated to Shreveport following Hurricane Katrina. We completed another 25 houses on that trip We traveled to El Salvador in November. I was there for two weeks prior to the build with several other volunteers making preparations. For the week of the build one hundred and eight volunteers, representing 28 states, Canada and Peru, and ranging in age from 17 to 75, built 16 houses in five days. (continued on next page)

4 (House Building Vacations, continued) In February 2009 our friend and leader Millard Fuller was called to home to heaven. Millard had planned that for his and Linda s 50 th Wedding Anniversary they were going to do something big. She told us later she thought maybe he was going to take her on a cruise. But his celebration idea was about housing and other people. What he had planned was a build in his birthplace Lanett Alabama. This became the site of the first annual Millard Fuller Legacy Build. It was a celebration of the life of a wonderful man who put the topic of poverty housing on the hearts and minds of anyone who would listen. Every breath he drew was utilized to improve the quality of life of those who are unfortunate enough to live in poverty housing we were in Indianapolis, Indiana for the Second Legacy Build We were in Minden Louisiana where we built 8 new houses and seven homes received Greater Blessings repairs The Fuller Center launched Save a House/Make a Home initiative to take foreclosed homes deemed toxic assets by banks and turn them into homes for families. It s an initiative that benefits families, banks, communities and the housing market itself. We missed the Legacy Build in It was the first one we have missed. This year we were in Atlantic City N.J. helping with repairs to homes damaged during Hurricane Sandy. We traveled up by way of the Eastern Shore of Virginia, into Maryland and then Delaware. In Delaware we stayed one night at Lewes DL before boarding the Ferry for the 85 minute ride to Cape May N.J. We spent some time touring around Cape May before traveling north to Atlantic City. The week long build kicked off with a gathering for dinner on Sunday evening and meeting up with our team members. Each house is assigned a team. Our team consisted of two friends from Blacksburg I first met in 2006, a friend from California we met two years ago, and two new member of our group were a teacher from Wyoming, Michigan and a retiree from Tyler, Texas. Yes that is right only seven of us and we were assigned to a duplex. The house sustained damage 32 inches up the wall. A prior team had removed the damaged plaster and flooring. Our job was to replace the plaster with drywall, prepare and paint the walls, and replace the flooring. We were held up a little when the plumber ran into a little difficulty and couldn t get the part he needed to finish so that held up the drywall, but we were able to get the one duplex finished and the floor finished in the second one. The group that followed us will finish painting the second duplex and install the new appliances in the kitchen. It was announced that next year the host city for the Legacy Build will be Louisville Kentucky. We love to talk about our experiences with housing. So please stop us and ask. We are not master builders, but we are always willing to learn. I think that is what God asks of each of us; that we make ourselves available. He will provide all our needs. 5 A MOUSE IN THE CORNER By Harriet Gearhart June 2013 Last month we discovered that there really was a little mouse living somewhere secure in a corner of the church! He had been holed up in a room on the first floor, keeping an eye on what went on in the church. I found him again later on in the month as he was getting bolder and spending more time roaming the halls listening in on conversations. When I caught up with him I asked him what was his purpose for being in Kilmarnock Baptist Church. His answer surprised me. I was told to find a place to stay out of sight, get comfortable and prepare to spend at least two months trying to find out why the people who meet there were so pleasant and what they were learning about that man kneeling by the rock. After our conversation last month when I explained who Jesus was, and then after the choir made that sound he had been listening to for weeks, he was hooked! He told me that he was fascinated by the choir and they invited him to stay and they would teach him how to make the pretty noise they called music. Several days later I found him sitting up on a counter in the kitchen having a cup of tea. He very graciously offered me a cup and after we were settled I introduced myself and asked his name. He looked puzzled and then explained that he wasn t sure what his name really was. He was told that he had been sent by his father who was called Sam Mascot. With no other information than that, he had borrowed his father s last name, added his own touch and now calls himself Scott Mascotson. So from then on our Mr. Mouse became Scott Mascotson, honorary member of the Sanctuary Choir. He assumed that this had to be Heaven until I explained that no, he was still on earth. I could see that it was going to be hard for me to explain Christianity to an uneducated mouse but he was such an eager student. So I took it on myself to be the best teacher I could be. He assumed that some day there would be a mouse heaven available, for didn t God need a mouse or two to keep the cats away!? I thought the first place to start his training was to show him the Bible. He was familiar with the book for he had spent hours scanning through the ones he had found in the sanctuary but all he could understand was that it had pretty pictures. So Scott and I set a time each day that we called school time. He desperately wanted to earn God s approval and perhaps earn a place in God s house as Head Cat Catcher. I could not convince him that earning God s approval was not the reason one wanted to learn about Jesus and the Bible. After all how could a mouse understand about love? So not expecting much success, I began to read to him from the book of Genesis. By the time we got into the begats his eyes slowly closed down and he was asleep. I was surprised to find him waiting for me the following day so I decided to try a simpler way to begin his lessons. We visited the Nursery where he sat and listened eagerly to all the Bible stories. After I had read and reread all the books we could find, for he loved to hear about the baby Jesus and how he grew up, we decided to take a day off so he could digest all that he had learned. Teaching a mouse to be a Christian is not an easy job! In a week his two month assignment had to be finished and one day I went to look for him. All I found was a short note which read: I had to leave to go back to report my findings. Thank you for introducing me to Jesus. I am going to find as many mice as I can who are willing to listen to the story I have to tell them so God will have enough to establish a Mouse Heaven. We will take care of all those cats in his house! After waiting for several weeks I had to admit that my career as a mouse teacher had reached an end. I haven t seen him in some time and I assume he has decided not to continue his studies or has moved to another corner. I miss our conversations so I will continue to wait and watch. I have the feeling that some day we will hear from him again.

6 This June the WMU will begin its year long celebration, 125 years of carrying out the Great Commission. The members of WMU have been handing out personal invitations to the women of KBC. We hoped to reach each one of you. Just in case we missed someone, please know that all of you are invited to a special program and luncheon June 11 at 11 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Our program will outline a few of our projects, provide music and fellowship. KBC & WMU History The following excerpts are from an old article found in some WMU files. The author does not identify herself. The Woman s Missionary Union of KBC was organized in 1914 by Mrs. W. B. Bagby, a missionary on furlough from her post in Brazil. It was organized as the Woman s Missionary Society the year before the chartering of the church in Rev. and Mrs. Bagby, pioneer missionaries in Brazil, were visiting their son, Rev. T. C. Bagby, who was the pastor of Morattico Baptist Church, the mother church of Kilmarnock. While serving as pastor of Morattico, Rev. Bagby also preached at Kilmarnock. He eventually resigned and he and his wife followed the footsteps of his parents and went to Brazil, serving together for more than 40 years. The members of the newly organized Woman s Missionary Society were not new to the idea of supporting missions for they had been contributing to missions through Morattico Baptist Church. In its beginning the W. M. Society seems to have coexisted with the Ladies Aid Society. In 1918 the Woman s Missionary Society began organizations for both young men and young ladies. Also in 1918 the W. M. Society joined the Claybrook/Dunaway Group of churches, and helped raise $500 which was sent to the Church Building and Loan Fund of the Home Mission Board. In 1962 an active and dedicated member of the Woman s Missionary Union of KBC, Mrs. T. W. Bonner, Sr. was elected Superintendent (Director) of the Woman s Missionary Union Auxiliary to the Rappahannock Baptist Association and served with distinction for fifteen years. Judy Beane, a young woman nurtured in Sunbeams, Girl s in Action and Young Woman s Auxiliary, answered the call to missions while attending Campbell College and served under the Home Mission Board as a summer missionary. After graduation, she continued her commitment to missions as a US-2. Judy continued her call to missions by working for Open Door Ministry for street people in Sausalito, California. In 1985, a really meaningful experience of the WMU and all members of the church was the celebration of the 150 th year of the sailing J. Lewis Shuck and Henrietta Hall Shuck for China. Henrietta was the daughter of Addison Hall, a prominent Baptist minister of Lancaster County. At the time of her birth the family was living just a short distance from the present church house. She was the first American evangelical woman missionary to go to China and the second to open a school in Macao for Chinese children. She was a member of Morattico Baptist Church. Congratulations to Elizabeth and Dan Sanders. Elizabeth was named teacher of the year at St. Clare Walker Middle School by her colleagues at Middlesex County where she teaches Language Arts and history. The honor recognizes exemplary teaching in the classroom and school community and embodies teacher leadership and instructional innovation. Dan graduated May 9th from the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy in law enforcement.

7 MISSION UPDATE FROM VICTOR VULA Greetings from Myanmar! Hope this letter finds you and your love ones well. How are you? Thank you always for your prayer and support for our educational ministry in Myanmar. By God s grace we are doing great. May 16 last Thursday was our farewell program for the Summer English School. This English special class will continue throughout the year on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday As our summer program is over, we are now starting preparation for regular school year which will be reopened on June 5, As we are going to start Grade 1 this year and add 1 grade each year, we need your continue support and prayer. Our mission churches are growing; we will have 4 people who are ready to be baptized within the next few days. As the raining season in Myanmar is starting, we are also preparing to provide clean water for people in disadvantaged communities (starting from where we built churches) with Bio-sand water filter program (I went for the training in India in April). Please continue to pray for us and support us for: * Materials still needed in and outside the classroom for VCA. * English speaking people to teach and train native teachers. * As rental cost is increasing every year, and need of bigger house is required as classes are being added; we really need our own place. * For the Lord to add new believers and churches to His church through our church planting program. * Provide more clean water solution. "The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace." Yours in Christ, Victor Vula Yangon
