1 SEPTEMBER 2015 CARMEL CHRISTIAN CHURCH 463 EAST MAIN STREET, CARMEL, IN HERE TO ZEHR During my sermon series The Games of Life I have spoken about how important reframing our reality to help us create the reality we desire. So often we get caught up in the negative thoughts or disturbing issues around us that hold us back from soaring into the richness of life that God has for us. This poem, written by a 14 year old, captures my perspective in a great way. Read poem top to bottom and then read it from the bottom to the top. It is the same words, but what a different perspective about life the same words give us with a different positioning. Today was the absolute worst day ever And don t try to convince me that There s something good in every day Because, when you take a closer look, This world is pretty evil place. Even if Some goodness does shine through once in awhile Satisfaction and happiness don t last. And it s not true that It s all in the mind and heart Because True happiness can be obtained Only if one s surroundings are good It s note true that good exists I m sure you can agree that The reality Creates My attitude It s all beyond my control And you ll never in a million years hear me say that Today was a good day Be a Miracle, Pastor Jerry

3 Coming Up in September I am really looking forward to our upcoming fall programs. Starting September 13, we will have a new Church school hour set up from 9:15-10:15. We will be having a class for our children using drama, music, puppetry in which the children will learn the teachings of Jesus. We will also have an adult class at the same time with some special speakers each week. September 13 th - Discovery Class - This will be a session learning about the beliefs and history of the Disciples of Christ and our church. This will be especially good for new members and new friends who are attending. September 20 th - Joel Cooper had a been one of our missionaries in Lebanon this past year. He will share some of his experiences working with The Forum for Development, Culture, and Dialogue (FDCD) which is engaged in a wide variety of activities in Lebanon, Syria, and the surrounding region. Through the fostering of interfaith dialogue, the FDCD serves to build bridges across historic sectarian divisions both within Lebanon and throughout the region. September 27 th - Science and Spirituality: Mystery as Common Ground. A presentation by Dr. George Wolfe, author of Meditations on Mystery: Science, Paradox and Contemplative Spirituality. The concepts of paradox and mystery lie at the heart of both modern scientific thought and contemplative spirituality. George Wolfe brings together believers and nonbelievers around the concept of mystery in an effort to end the hostile rhetoric that has been exchanged between these two groups over the past several years. It is also Professor Wolfe s attempt to reach anyone who fails to appreciate the rich mythology and wisdom that is found in the ancient religious texts that continue to impact our world. Sept Sept. 20 Help End Hunger in Hamilton County The Hamilton County Crop Hunger Walk Team is partnering with the Good Samaritan Network and others to leverage the capabilities of our network of faith communities to impact a community-wide effort to end hunger. Part of this effort involves county-wide food drives to FILL THE SHELVES of local food pantries in Hamilton County. During this time churches are asked to collect food and take the food to a pantry of their choice, or they may drop off food directly at GSN which delivers food to local pantries in need. 5 Wedding bells will be ringing soon (September 26) for our own Mandy Berninger and her fiancé, Jeremy. To share in and celebrate their happiness, we will be hosting a reception for the couple in Fellowship Hall following services on Sunday, September 13 th. At this time we would like to present them with a Fill the Pantry Basket full of kitchen basics. Please help us by bringing items such as flour, sugar, spices, oils, vinegar, condiments, rice, pasta, etc and deposit them in the designated box found in fellowship hall. Thanks for making this a special day for Mandy and Jeremy! Inviting All Men The Miracle of Prayer Starting September 8 Tuesday 7:00-8:30 pm Prayer is miraculous communication, communion and community with God, alone and also with others. Prayer is about intimate contact with God's love that makes a practical difference in how you feel and how you make decisions in your life in accord with your highest and the highest good of all concerned. Our lives are a prayer, whether we know it or not. Whether you are a beginner at prayer and/or Bible study, or you have been fascinated for a long time, you are invited to enter into a covenant with God and other participants for 10 weeks to explore what happens when you pray and especially with Biblical resources and insight. This is a practical, hands-on approach, and includes a simple journal, and daily devotional. Prayer is an exquisite spiritual gift. Let's learn from God, the Bible and each other what God can and will do when we pray with the Bible and the Holy Spirit. This will be led by Dr. Rev. Mary Rudy who has had extensive training and experience in teaching the power of prayer. I will be keynoting our Regional Men s Retreats this fall. There will be one September at Camp Barbee in North Webster Indiana and September at Camp Bedford in Bedford Indiana. There is an optional Golf outing Friday morning before the event begins in the evening. My theme is Soul Shaping. Deception, Betrayal, Jealousy, Redemption, Forgiveness and Reconciliation are experiences that many of us men experience as we strive to let God shape our souls. I will use the story of Esau and Jacob, two of the most famous brothers in the bible, as my biblical foundation to explore this theme. There will be great fellowship, excellent food, meaningful discussions and time to get away. The camps are set up with cabins that have inside restrooms and bunk beds. 6 Do you like to sing? We will have our first choir rehearsal on Thursday, September 10 at 6:30. If you want to sing with us but can t make Thursday night Rehearsals, let Jerry know, he can work something out. The church is open for prayer from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday - Thursday.
