1 Route 66 Understanding Isaiah Dr. Stephen Rummage, Senior Pastor Bell Shoals Baptist Church May 18, 2016 Isaiah 6:1 (ESV) In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of His robe filled the temple. Structure of Isaiah I. Condemnation (Isaiah 1-39) A. Burdens (1-23) B. Songs (24-27) C. Woes (28-35) D. History (36-39) II. Consolation (Isaiah 40-66) A. God's Greatness (40-48) B. God's Grace (49-57) C. God's Glory (58-66) A Prophet s Portrait of Jesus Isaiah 53: 1-12 Isaiah 53:1 (ESV) Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? Isaiah 53:2 (ESV) For He grew up before Him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; He had no form or majesty that we should look at Him, and no beauty that we should desire Him. Isaiah 53:3 (ESV) He was despised and rejected by men; a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. Isaiah 53:4 (ESV) Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. Isaiah 53:5 (ESV) But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:6 (ESV) All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:7 (ESV) He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so He opened not his mouth. Isaiah 53:8 (ESV) By oppression and judgment He was taken away; and as for His generation, who considered that He was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of My people? Isaiah 53:9 (ESV) And they made His grave with the wicked and with a rich man in His death, although He had done no violence, and there was no deceit in His mouth. Isaiah 53:10 (ESV) Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush Him; He has put Him to grief; when His soul makes an offering for guilt, He shall see His offspring; He shall prolong His days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. Isaiah 53:11 (ESV) Out of the anguish of His soul He shall see and be satisfied; by His knowledge shall the righteous one, My Servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and He shall bear their iniquities. Isaiah 53:12 (ESV) Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the many, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong, because He poured out His soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet He bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors. 1. The Sorrows of Jesus Christ Isaiah 53:2 (ESV) For He grew up before Him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; He had no form or majesty that we should look at Him, and no beauty that we should desire Him. Isaiah 53:3 (ESV) He was despised and rejected by men; a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. John 1:10 (ESV) He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him. John 1:11 (ESV) He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him. 2. The Stripes of Jesus Christ 2
3. The Sheep of Jesus Christ Isaiah 53:6 (ESV) All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Matthew 15:24 (ESV) He answered, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. John 10:14 (ESV) I am the good shepherd. I know My own and My own know me, John 10:15 (ESV) just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. John 10:16 (ESV) And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to My voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 4. The Silence of Jesus Christ Isaiah 53:7 (ESV) He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so He opened not his mouth. 1 Peter 2:23 (ESV) When He was reviled, He did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but continued entrusting Himself to Him who judges justly. 5. The Sacrifice of Jesus Christ Isaiah 53:8 (ESV) By oppression and judgment He was taken away; and as for His generation, who considered that He was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of My people? Isaiah 53:9 (ESV) And they made His grave with the wicked and with a rich man in His death, although He had done no violence, and there was no deceit in His mouth. 6. The Satisfaction of Jesus Christ 3
4 Isaiah 53:10 (ESV) Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush Him; He has put Him to grief; when His soul makes an offering for guilt, He shall see His offspring; He shall prolong His days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. 2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV) For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.
5 Understanding Isaiah Meaning: Isaiah means the salvation of the Lord Author: Isaiah Audience: The Jewish Nation Date of writing: BC Theme: Two major themes exist. Chastening Judah because of their sins and encouraging the captives during their suffering. Key Verses: Isaiah 53:1-12 Structure of Isaiah III. Condemnation (Isaiah 1-39) E. Burdens (Isaiah 1-23) F. Songs (Isaiah 24-27) G. Woes (Isaiah 28-35) H. History (Isaiah 36-39) IV. Consolation (Isaiah 40-66) D. God's Greatness (Isaiah 40-48) E. God's Grace (Isaiah 49-57) F. God's Glory (Isaiah 58-66) What we know about Isaiah the prophet: He was apparently from a leading family of Israel, since he had access to several Jewish kings. He was married. (8:3) He was the father of at least two sons. (7:30 and 8:1-3) He began his ministry near the close of the reign of King Uzziah, about 758 BC. Tradition tells us he was sawn in two by wicked King Manasseh.
6 Great Prophetic Themes of Isaiah Still Unfulfilled The Day of the Lord Some 45 times Isaiah uses the term in the day to describe this period of apocalyptic judgment 2:10-22; 4:1; 13:9-13; 24:1-23; 32:1-20; 63:1-6 Blessing upon restored Israel 2:1-5; 4:2-6; 9:7; 11:4-16; 12:1-6; 14:1-3; 25:1-12; 32:15-20; 35:1-10; 52:1-12; 59:20-21; 60:1-12; 61:3-62; 65:17-66:24 Restoration of Israel to Palestine 11:10-12; 14:1-2; 27:12-13; 35:10; 43:5-6; 49:10-12; 66:20 Jerusalem as capital of the earth 1:26; 2:3; 4:2-6; 12:6; 24:23; 26:1; 40:2; 52:1-12; 60:1-22; 62:1-7 Blessing upon the remnant 12:1-6; 25:1-12; 26:1-19; 33:24; 35:10; 43:25; 44:22; 46:13; 54:6-10; 61:6; 62:12; 66:8 Blessing upon the nations 2:1-4; 11:3-4, 9-10; 25:6-9; 60:1-12 Restoration of Palestine itself 30:23-26; 35:1-10; 49:19; 60:13; 61:4; 62:4-5; 65:21-25 Blessing to entire creation Isaiah had a fleeting glimpse beyond the Kingdom Age to the new heaven and earth of the eternal state (65:17; 66:22). But like John in Revelation (Rev ) he saw a blended view of millennial and eternal conditions (compare 11:6-8 with 65:25; 66:22)
