Paladin Lucas Teeter...Disciples House Resident Advisor Christa Schmeder...Director of Youth Ministry Toxic Charity Discussion Group Join us this Sunday, May 7, after service to discuss the book Toxic Charity by Robert Lupton. This Sunday s theme is The Oath. Lupton s book outlines an oath for compassionate service. Our conversation begins at 11:15 and light refreshments are served. We will finish promptly at 12:30 p.m. The hope is that this conversation serves as an opportunity to think more critically about how we serve our community Disciples Virtual 5K Results! A big high five to all those who signed up for the Disciples Virtual 5K, especially those that woke up early on Easter morning to walk or run. (Carol you rock!) A total of 460 participants raised $9,650 for Disciples Mission Fund. We will let you know when you can pick up your medal and t-shirt! Moments from Last Sunday T-shirt and medal given to participants in the Disciples Virtual 5K/10K. Top left: It s great to see Stephen, who is back home from college! Am I getting shorter or did he get a lot taller? Yes. Above: Matt pointed out the city of Emmaus in the background of the painting. Left: The walk to Emmaus happens right now. We are always walking in the presence of Jesus.
2 Matt s Minute Mother s Day is around the corner. I hope you will join us on May 14 as we celebrate ALL the women of the church on this day. Mother s Day, in many ways, is a Hallmark holiday. That is, we remember our moms with cards and flowers. I think this is important. Motherhood is a thankless and never-ceasing job for so many women. We should appreciate our moms on Mother s Day. I believe that we should honor our moms by recalling that Mother s Day, for many years, was a day to promote peace. I am reminded of Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Howe was an abolitionist, a women s suffrage advocate and an activist for peace. In 1870, Howe penned the Mother s Day Proclamation for Peace. Her motivation came from having witnessed the horrors of the Civil War. Her proclamation seems so appropriate for our time. Could we make the same proclamation? Arise, then, women of this day! Arise, all women who have hearts, Whether our baptism be of water or of tears! Say firmly: We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies, Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience. We, the women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. From the bosom of the devastated Earth a voice goes up with our own. It says: Disarm! Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice. Blood does not wipe out dishonor, nor violence indicate possession. As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil at the summons of war, Let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel. In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask That a general congress of women without limit of nationality may be appointed and held at Rev. Matt Gordon Senior Minister Church phone: matt@heartofcorvallis.org Open Office Hours: Mondays: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Tuesdays: 1:00 p.m. - -4:00 p.m. someplace deemed most convenient And at the earliest period consistent with its objects, To promote the alliance of the different nationalities, The amicable settlement of international questions, The great and general interests of peace. Peace, Pastor Matt From Kevin Weaver: Dear First Christian Church of Corvallis Congregation, As some of you may have heard I stepped down from my position as Coordinator of Homeless Employment Launching Project (HELP). It is with a very heavy heart that I do so. Through the more than six years that I have been responsible for its operation, I made some great friends and helped many of those whom we are here to serve realize a more positive future with greater possibilities. That reward of watching individuals and families move along in their lives has been the singularly most rewarding experience of my life. HELP is moving in a different direction; one that I cannot endorse or follow. I feel the weight of responsibility to those I served and those who are still enrolled in HELP. It is because of my responsibility to do the best for these people and the increasing inability for me to do so as my reason for stepping aside. I fully endorse the HELP employees and their efforts to move forward in their lives. I hope to discover new paths to help the poor realize a better future. I do not know what the future holds or what is next. I hope that you, as congregants, are as interested and excited to find a project with which we can help people with integrity and care as I am. I would like to reassure everyone that I am not stepping down from my security and outreach position provided by the church. My first and primary duty is to the continued integrity and safety of this church. With gratitude, R. Kevin Weaver, Outreach
