1 Methodist Children s Home Offers Hope Although the name has changed through the years and the program of care has adapted to the needs of those it serves, Methodist Children s Home remains true to its mission to offer hope to children, youth, and families through a nurturing Christian community. Please prayerfully consider giving to MCH through our May 7 Communion Offering and support the work MCH has done in Christ s name for 127 years. MCH is a nationally accredited, nonprofit childcare ministry affiliated with the six United Methodist Annual Conferences of Texas and New Mexico. It provides services to children and youth through residential care at the Waco campus and Boys Ranch near Axtell and offers foster care and services throughout Texas and New Mexico. More than 1,000 children benefit - continued - May 2017 Island in the Son UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS monthly from services provided to families through Outreach offices in Abilene; Bryan/ College Station; Corpus Christi; Dallas; El Paso; Houston; Killeen; Lubbock; San Antonio; Tyler; Waco; and Albuquerque and Las Cruces, New Mexico. MCH facilitates spiritual development, education, recreation, sports, leadership, service, and work opportunities, as well as transition, independent living, and aftercare. It also assists grand-parents who serve as primary caregivers for their grandchildren. President and CEO Tim Brown said, We are proud of the success we are having with children, youth and families, as they work hard and make tremendous sacrifices to reclaim hope in their lives and seize the opportunities for health, progress and optimistic futures. We hope that you, too, are comforted by our improving outcomes. Thank you for your continued investment of support and prayers. Betty Thomas, Worship Team Chair
2 Beach Treasures Page 2 Next Meeting: UMW Spring Luncheon UMW would like to give a big thank you to our members and guests for their support this winter and spring. Wasn't that a great strawberry social? Not only did Dave Satterwhite cook all the meat, he also provided entertainment. An enormous thanks to Dave for all his hard work and to the ladies who made side dishes and served our guests. Your generosity will help our mission projects for the year. We have made a contribution to the Westside Helping Hands, Feed the Kids for FBISD, blankets for Wooldridge Nursing home residents and additional banners for our worship center. To close out the year, we will meet on Thursday 11 May at the American Bank parking lot at 10 AM to take the blankets to the Wooldridge Nursing home. Afterwards we are having lunch at the new Chuy's Restaurant at 11 AM. Again, thanks for the support! Our sympathy and condolences go to: Family and friends of Aurora Thorsen, who passed away on March 25, May 2017 Third Sunday Potluck Luncheon Immediately following worship on May 21, All are invited bring a dish to share! The Original Mother s Day Proclamation Julia Ward Howe While countries around the world celebrate their own Mother s Day at different times throughout the year, several countries, including the United States, Italy, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, and Turkey celebrate it on the second Sunday of May. Arise, all women who have hearts! In the United States, the origins of the official holiday go back to 1870, when Julia Ward Howe an abolitionist best remembered as the poet who wrote Battle Hymn of the Republic worked to establish a Mother s Peace Day. Howe dedicated the celebration to the eradication of war, and organized festivities in Boston for years. In 1907, Anna Jarvis, of Philadelphia, began the campaign to have Mother s Day officially recognized, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson did this, proclaiming it a national holiday and a public expression of our love and reverence for all mothers. Today s commercialized celebration of candy, flowers, gift certificates, and lavish meals at restaurants bears little resemblance to Howe s original idea. There is nothing wrong with that. But here, for the record s sake, is the proclamation she wrote in 1870, which explains, in her own impassioned words, the goals of the original holiday. Arise, all women who have hearts, whether your baptism be that of water or of tears! Say firmly: We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies, our husbands shall not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience. We women of one country will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own. It says, Disarm, disarm! The sword is not the balance of justice. Blood does not wipe out dishonor nor violence indicate possession. As men have often forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel. Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead. Let them then solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means whereby the great human family can live in peace, each learning after his own time, the sacred impress, not of Caesar, but of God. In the name of womanhood and of humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limit of nationality may be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace. HAPPY MOTHER S DAY!!!
