Matt s Minute I spent several years where my primary job description was ministry with middle and high school youth.

My hope is that youth ministry will always be a part of what I do in ministry, even if it is at sometimes secondary or tertiary in my job description.

One of the exercises I did in almost every youth ministry context was to ask youth to describe the perfect church. The picture they painted was virtually the same every time.

2 Matt s Minute I spent several years where my primary job description was ministry with middle and high school youth. I was a youth pastor and served a regional minister for youth and young adults in the Washington and North Idaho region of the Disciples church. My hope is that youth ministry will always be a part of what I do in ministry, even if it is at sometimes secondary or tertiary in my job description. In my experience, youth ministry is always a roller coaster. The highs are really high, the lows are really low and at the end of the day, you are just glad you did not throw up all over yourself. One of the exercises I did in almost every youth ministry context was to ask youth to describe the perfect church. The picture they painted was virtually the same every time. Take out the pews and put in couches. Good snacks and beverages are a must in the perfect church. There is an opportunity to talk back to the minister and many voices are heard, especially the voice of the young people. More instruments and a drum beat are necessary and so are more candles. While you might get a laugh at some of these statements, I hope you can read between the lines and hear the desires of our young people. What these statements say to me is so much more than cultural or generational trends. These are vision statements for what the church should be. Here is my interpretation and vision for the church. Church must be accessible. Lose the formalities and the rules that stand in the way of everyone being involved and I mean everyone. Lose the special rules for leadership in the church as to open wide the opportunity for young people to be engaged and involved. Church must listen, not just speak. We need to stop pretending we know how everything should be done and make room for new ideas and new concepts in the church. Everyone needs a voice and church is an opportunity to lift up the voices of those not heard outside the church. Church must be alive. We must believe in what we are saying, what we are singing and be passionate about what we are doing. Church must be sanctuary (more candles). Church must be a safe and welcoming place to reflect and consider bigger issues. The church will never be perfect. The church will never meet everyone s needs. Not everyone will be happy all the time. Let us press on towards the goal of making this place a great place for all. Peace, Matt Rev. This will be an opportunity to see the house, meet some of the students and connect with other people on an informal level. There will be coffee and snacks provided by the students and Irami, our resident director. Relying on the spirit and story of the gospels, First Christian Church is supported primarily by donations. In Sunday School from Emily, Vicki, and Leah Last week in Sunday School the younger class studied the stories of Moses.

The middle class also started learning about Moses this week. They discussed part of the Old Testament this week by studying the story of Cain and Abel.

The older kids experienced a little unfairness as their teacher dolled out M&M s throughout class based on the roll of the dice. In Our Prayers Don Zobel s mother passed away.

3 In Sunday School from Emily, Vicki, and Leah Last week in Sunday School the younger class studied the stories of Moses. The children listened to the story of the baby Moses and then made boat baskets for baby Moses and wrapped him in flannel. Then they attempted to float their boats down the Nile River. The middle class also started learning about Moses this week. They discussed part of the Old Testament this week by studying the story of Cain and Abel. This story allowed them to discuss the ideas of jealousy, anger, defensiveness, and regret, as well as the classic truth that life is not fair, and how one deals with that. The cost to you is only $20 ($25 for XXL). Dia de Los Muertos Party Our annual Dia de Los Muertos party will be held this year on Thursday, October 29, from 12:00-2:30 p.m. at the Evans-Herb house on Buchanan St. Add this fun event to your calendar. Lunch will be provided along with decorating sugar skulls and playing with Lego in the basement! Please RSVP to Emily if you plan on coming and if you need directions to the house! Order one today and order one for a friend tomorrow. Sweatshirts will be delivered by October 25, just in time to show off our sweatshirts at our Community Service Sunday. Everyone is welcome! This ecumenical service, led by the Corvallis Taizé Ensemble, includes meditative singing, short readings, and a quiet time for prayer. The 10th Annual Make A Joyful Noise choral extravaganza is scheduled for 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 8, in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church in Corvallis. The past nine years have provided us a wonderful opportunity for the gathering of church musicians and members of our congregations from the mid-valley area for this celebration offered in support of our shared campus ministry through United Campus Ministry at Westminster House and Oregon State University. Share in a Unique Christmas Play Experience We are looking for friends to assist in the production of the Annual Christmas Play presented by the ecumenical intellectually and developmentally disabled community and friends.
