1 Welcoming Everyone, Serving in God s Love REFLECTIONS We often begin the New Year with a resolution or two; lose weight, eat healthier, get more exercise, spend more time with the family. You can fill in your resolution. At the beginning of a new year, John Wesley would lead his followers in a Covenant Service. It was a time when they would reaffirm their commitment to God. It has become my tradition to share Wesley s prayer with you as a reminder of what it means to be a follower of Christ. Let this be our prayer as be begin a new year together. I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed for thee or laid aside for thee, exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. Blessings to you and your family in Blessings, Doug

January 14 January 21 January 28 I m Calling You 1 Samuel 3:1-20 Samuel, the little boy working for Eli, the priest, is addressed by God one night. UMW Sunday Esther Fish Tales Mark 1:14-20 Jesus calls a group of people to be his disciples. Worship/Music Committee The committee very much thanks the following who helped to hang the greens in Dec. Liz & Pat Heacock, Brenda & Robert Roa,Kelly LaFee, Jack Grinstead, Rex Danford, Jay Johnson, Marilyn Nicolas, Mary Barrows, Joy McBee, Laura Daillak and Pastor Doug. We completed the task in 2 hours and some of us even enjoyed the snickerdoodles and hot chocolate in the Narthex. An added feature thanks to Liz and Pat a lighted tree for the Narthex. The next all church event will be the un-hanging of the greens on Sat. Jan. 6 at 10:00 am. Come and join in the fun. Volunteers welcome. We also wish to thank all of you who ordered poinsettias for the chancel steps. They really add great color to the sanctuary. GARRISON KEILLOR ON "METHODISTS" - We make fun of Methodists for their blandness, their excessive calm, their fear of giving offense, their lack of speed, and also for their secret fondness for macaroni and cheese. But nobody sings like them. If you were to ask an audience in New York City, a relatively Methodist-less place, to sing along on the chorus of "Michael Row the Boat Ashore," they will look daggers at you as if you had asked them to strip to their underwear. But if you do this among Methodists, they'd smile and row that boat ashore and up on the beach! And down the road! Many Methodists are bred from childhood to sing in four-part harmony, a talent that comes from sitting on the lap of someone singing alto or tenor or bass and hearing the harmonic intervals by putting your little head against that person's rib cage. It's natural for Methodists to sing in harmony. They are too modest to be soloists, too worldly to sing in unison. When you're singing in the key of C and you slide into the A7th and D7th chords, all two hundred of you, it's an emotionally fulfilling moment. By joining in harmony, they somehow promise that they will not forsake each other. I do believe this: People, these Methodists, who love to sing in four-part harmony are the sort of people you can call up when you're in deep distress. CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

We are also in the process of reorganizing our organization the meeting will be held on Jan. 11 in the Sun Room at 10:00 am. Come with ideas on how we should proceed as a circle of Shepherd of the Hills UMW. We will join them at their monthly meetings on the 4 th Thursday. First meeting will be Jan. 25 at 10:00 am. We will meet at our church at 9:30 to carpool to their church. We will all dedicate our pledges for the year. Joy O Connor will continue as our treasurer. Any questions or more info call Eloise at GARRISON KEILLOR ON "METHODISTS" continued from page 3 - *If you're dying, they will comfort you. *If you are lonely, they'll talk to you. *And if you are hungry, they'll give you tuna salad. *Methodists believe in prayer, but would practically die if asked to pray out loud. *Methodists like to sing, except when confronted with a new hymn or a hymn with more than four stanzas. *Methodists believe their pastors will visit them in the hospital, even if they don't notify them that they are there. *Methodists usually follow the official liturgy and will feel it is their way of suffering for their sins. *Methodists believe in miracles and even expect miracles, especially during their stewardship visitation programs or when passing the plate. *Methodists think that the Bible forbids them from crossing the aisle while passing the peace. *Methodists drink coffee as if it were the Third Sacrament. *Methodists feel guilty for not staying to clean up after their own wedding reception in the Fellowship Hall. *Methodists are willing to pay up to one dollar for a meal at the church. *Methodists still serve Jell-O in the proper liturgical color of the season and think that peas in a tuna casserole adds too much color. *Methodists believe that it is OK to poke fun at themselves and never take themselves too seriously. *Methodists hear something funny during the sermon and smile as loudly as they can. *Methodists take ten minutes to say good - bye! (or for LCUMC, to greet one another) *It's 100 degrees, with 90% humidity, and you still have coffee after the service. *Donuts are a line item in the church budget, just like coffee. And finally : When you watch a Star Wars movie and they say, "May the Force be with you," you respond, "and also with you."
