Contact Tony Milazzo for reservations. Welcome to 2013, Cellini s 45 th Anniversary. Generally a 45 th Anniversary is called a sapphire anniversary. Cellini Lodge has had a wonderful history over the past 45 years and I can only wish many more years of greatness for our lodge and the Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA). January starts the much colder weather as we settle into winter. I know it may be difficult for some members to come to meetings this time of year. I ask each of you to try your best to attend meetings, ask other members to pick you up, maybe go for coffee afterwards. Enjoy being a member and hearing all that Cellini is doing in the community and within OSIA. As we look back to the month of December we had two successful events. The Adult Christmas Party on Dec 8 th and Children s Christmas Party on Dec 16 th. The respective chair people and their committees did an outstanding job and I want to thank Alfonso Squillante, Joann Grossman and Anna & Amanda Mulea specifically. I know they had help from their committees and I want to thank them all as well. This year we elect a new President for Cellini Lodge. I have truly enjoyed my two years as President of Cellini and I will never forget them. Let s all come together to elect our new slate of officers who will continue to lead Cellini forward. A new year is unfolding like a blossom with petals curled tightly concealing the beauty within. Author Unknown Unità nella Fraternità! Fraternally, Luigi Squillante Luigi Squillante President Cellini Lodge # 2206 Order Sons of Italy in America In early January we have our Pasta Night chaired by Tony Milazzo. This year the event should be full of fun as we will be entertained by The Rat Pack. The th Anniversary Year 2013

5 SANTA PAYS A VISIT TO CELLINI LODGE By Anna Mulea Befana and/or the Epiphany By John Misso Santa (Mark Ventimiglia) and Mrs. Santa (Denise Alfarone) arrived on Sunday, December 16 at Clinton Martin Park and joined the Cellini Lodge Childrens Christmas party which was in full swing. The 75 children and 112 adults were served a pancake and sausage breakfast and assorted pastries, cookies and cupcakes. The party was co-chaired by Anna Mulea, Amanda Mulea and Alfonso Squillante. It was a fun filled afternoon for the children, with tattoos handled by Cathy Kilfoyle, a holiday foam craft run by Mrs. Claus and what seemed to be the most popular event of the afternoon, Spin Art, which was run by Massimo Squillante, (Alfonso s eldest son). The highlight of the afternoon was when Santa (dressed in his new suit) and Mrs. Claus took their seats in front of the Christmas tree and gave out gifts to all the children. Each child waited patiently for his name to be called and each received a gift. Again this year the cost of the gifts was underwritten by a donation from Estee Lauder. We thank Estee Lauder for their generous donation. Thanks to Alfonso Squillante for being instrumental in getting this donation for us. Many thanks to all who donated a prize for the raffle table. The party ran smoothly and was successful because of the amazing elves who came and helped out. Head kitchen elf Alfonso Squillante did a great job with the pancakes and sausages, our very own President Luigi Squillante, Gina Ferrara, and Salvatore Squillante helped in the kitchen. Elf Marie Stefan checked the guests in at the door. Elf sold the raffle tickets. Thanks to the many other elves who helped set up the room and serve the breakfast: Elsie Giacamora, Teresa Sciciliano, Juliette Milazzo and Tom Giacamora. Our head sanitation engineering elf, Pat Ferrara and Pat Ferrara Jr. did a great job and kept us all neat and orderly. Each and every elf helped out in more than one capacity. An event like this cannot be a success without a great committee behind it. It looked like a great time was had by all. I have to give a special thanks to my co-chair and daughter Amanda for all her hard work. She shopped for most of the gifts and did the organizing and wrapping, and to Gina Ferrara who went with Amanda and did all the shopping for the food. The Feast of the Epiphany, celebrated January 6 with a national holiday in Italy, and the tradition of La Befana are a big part of Italian Christmas celebrations. Epiphany commemorates the 12th day of Christmas when the three Wise Men arrived at the manger bearing gifts for Baby Jesus. The traditional Christmas holiday season in Italy lasts through Epiphany. La Befana Italy's traditional celebration includes the tale of a witch known as La Befana who arrives on her broomstick during the night of January 5 and fills the stockings with toys and sweets for the good children and lumps of coal for the bad ones. According to the legend, the night before the Wise Men arrived at the manger they stopped at the shack of an old woman to ask directions. They invited her to come along but she replied that she was too busy. Then a shepherd asked her to join him but again she refused. Later that night, she saw a great light in the sky and decided to join the Wise Men and the shepherd bearing gifts that had belonged to her child who had died. She got lost and never found the manger. Now La Befana flies around on her broomstick each year on the 11th night, bringing gifts to children in hopes that she might find the Baby Jesus. Children hang their stockings on the evening of January 5 awaiting the visit of La Befana. The origins of La Befana may actually go back farther, to the Roman's pagan festival of Saturnalia, a one or two week festival starting just before the winter solstice. At the end of Saturnalia, Romans would go to the Temple of Juno on the Capitoline Hill to have their augers read by an old crone. Many pagan traditions were incorporated into Christmas celebrations when Christianity became main stream. La Befana was a good substitute for the old woman who read the augers. The saying augur originated with this practice, too, as it was common to wish someone good augers.
6 National Spaghetti Day By John Misso Today is National Spaghetti Day! Did you know that in the year 2000, 1.3 million pounds of spaghetti were sold in American grocery stores? If all of those packages were lined up, they would circle the Earth nine times! The first historical reference to boiled noodles (found in the Jerusalem Talmud) suggests that the Arabs invented the dish thousands of years ago. What s remarkable about this record is that it actually refers to dried noodles purchased from a vendor, which means that pasta has been sold in stores since at least the 5th century! Today we associate pasta with the Italians, who have revolutionized the dish and invented a wide variety of pasta shapes. These include farfalle, conchiglie, rotini, penne, tortellini, and, of course, spaghetti. Spaghetti is the most common round-rod type of pasta and in Italian, spaghetti means little lines. Spaghetti is traditionally served with tomato sauce and Parmesan cheese, but you can also add meat, garlic, oil, and pepper for extra flavor. To celebrate National Spaghetti Day, make spaghetti and meatballs for dinner or head to your favorite Italian restaurant. Enjoy!
