1 1 Stude U Wasatch Mountain Chapter, SDC Volume XXIV Number 09 September 2017 Studebakerdrivers.net President s Letter Even though the heat isn t an indicator, fall is approaching. How do I know? All those school buses, school zone speed limits and flashing lights, and the hordes of young people of all ages dashing here and there as they return to school. Please be watchful as you are out and about. Well, I survived the knee surgery, although I don t remember most of what happened during my 2-day hospital stay. I ve passed Home Health Physical Therapy and have graduated to out-of-house Physical Therapy. I hate the pain, but, boy does this knee move smoothly. Our IDYSD event is next weekend, the 9 th. We would suggest that those of you coming from Salt Lake north follow the plan you used for the visit to the bowling ball factory. I will meet you at the northbound Rest Stop, and we will go on to Maddox s from there. The parking situation is not going to be good. More about that at tomorrow s meeting. Bruce Linger is busy planning our October Autumn Leaf Viewing and more information will be available in next month s newsletter. In the meantime, come to the breakfast meeting tomorrow and plan on going on to a car show straight after the meeting. 2 2 August 5, 2017 Breakfast Meeting Golden Corral The day was beautiful and hot. Those in attendance were: David & Alice Fisher; Wayne and Barbara Fullmer; Candido and Frances Gallegos, 50 Starlite Coupe; Darius and Leslee Gray; Eddy & Babette Julius, 50 Champ; John & Dianne Levanger; and Henry Scott; and Harvey and Gloria Simons. President, David Fisher, welcomed everyone. He hoped everyone had a happy holiday. David encouraged members to attend the club picnic to be held on August 26, 2017 at Prospector Park, S 2200 W. There was a food list for the potluck portion circulated. The decision on the Studebaker Museum brick inscription was postponed until the September meeting. Candido reported that the donation to our Zone Meet had been sent. The 50/50 drawing was won by Henry Scott. Since there were only two Studebakers there, the pot was split between Eddy Julius and Candido Gallegos. In this Newsletter: President s Message 1 SW Zone Meet Info 5-6 Upcoming Events 1 Calendar 7 NC Zone Meet 2-3 Flyers 8 Legacy Picnic 3 Sponsors 9 Announcements 4 Officers/Membership 10 Club Picnic 4 International Drive Your Studebaker Day September 9, 2017 Our IDYSD outing is planned for September 9, We are to be at Maddox s Restaurant in Willard by 11:00 a.m. We do have reservations, but because we have some who can t get up and down stairs easily, we will be downstairs in the regular restaurant. Our parking there is not desirable, but if we get there by 11:00, we might be able to park close to each other. The only other together parking is on a downstairs level by the hotel. We expect to leave for Golden Spike by 1:30 at the latest. It is approximately 26 miles there, on paved road. At the current time, neither the re-enactment nor the driving of the trains is taking place due to track repair. All the other sites are open including the garage where we are welcome to go look at the trains. Please plan on joining us next Saturday. North Central Zone Meet August 3-6, 2017 By Marjeen Nation The North Central Zone Meet was held August 3 rd through the 6 th in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The weather was great for a beautiful drive to Colorado. Club members who attended were Fred Ball; Raymond and Diana Compton, 74 Avanti; Bruce Linger & Doris Gabbitas, 62 GT Hawk; Cecil & Marlaine Metcalf, daughter Melissa and her kids Maybel and Degan, 50 Commander; Gale & Linda Nation, 61 Lark & 55 President; Marjeen Nation and nieces Chelsey and Katelynn Sears; Terry & Janell Overturf, 65 Daytona; and Barbara Varner. The first night there was an outing to Rudy s County Store and Bar-B-Q. The next day consisted of a tour of Glen Eyrie Castle. We watched a brief video of the history of the castle and then were separated into groups to take a tour. We were able to tour several rooms in the castle. We got to see the music room, study, one of the bedrooms, dining hall, and solarium. There were several fireplaces that we got to see which all have a story behind them. After the castle, we drove to the visitor center for the Garden of the Gods. We watched a video which explained how the rock formations were formed. We then had a box lunch and then everyone gathered together in the parking lot where a group picture was taken. By the time the picture was done, the storm that had been threatening all day started to arrive. Several cars decided to drive through the Garden of the Gods. We saw a rock formation that looked like two camels kissing each other and another called Balanced Rock. The next day was the car show, where there were 53 cars that were judged. That night was the banquet. The banquet started off with a nice dinner and a silent auction. We were then entertained by the medicine man. There were several different chapters represented and over 100 people attended the zone meet. It was announced that there will be changes coming to Turning Wheels in January. They are working on updating the roster and it should be available digitally after the 1 st of the year. Cecil and Marlaine Metcalf won the award for Ladies choice with their 50 Commander. Bruce and Tammy Burst won the award for Men s choice with their 58 Packard Hawk. Malcom won the award for oldest car with his 28 President Convertible. Bruce Linger won the award for longest drive, coming from Ogden, Utah in his

3 3 62 GT Hawk. The Painter Family won the award for Best of Show with their 53 Custom. The last day consisted of everyone enjoying breakfast and then heading out on their journey home. Everyone who attended had a great time. Legacy Retirement Residence Car Show By Marjeen Nation Several club members attended the Legacy Retirement Residence Car Show. Those in attendance were Fred Ball, Candido & Francis Gallegos, John & Dianne Levanger, Cecil & Marlaine Metcalf, daughter Melissa and her kids Maybel and Degan, Gale & Linda Nation, Marjeen Nation and nieces Aspen Clarke, Victoria Clarke and Katelynn Sears, and Barbara Varner. There were 105 registered cars. They had free face painting, balloons, clowns, snow cones and popcorn available. There was a live band who entertained the crowd. Lunch was also free and consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and bottled water. Soda pop was available for purchase. Everyone enjoyed viewing the cars. Club members set up canopies and set out chairs. We enjoyed spending some time in the shade talking. The event ended with an awards ceremony. No one in the club won an award. I heard through the grapevine that Barbara had an adventure on her way home from the event. I will leave that story for her to tell us.
