22 General Information Format of Church Listings Parochial Statistics In accordance with Resolution A104 (amending Title I, Canon 6) adopted at the 73 rd General Convention meeting in Denver, Colorado, a summary of statistical information is printed with each church listing. This information was taken from the most recent Parochial Report submitted by each congregation. Clergy Staff Titles assigned to clergy reflect a wide range of usage in the Diocese and around the whole church. For purposes of this Journal the following titles are used in the manner listed below: Rector - full time member of the clergy in charge of a parish Vicar - full time member of the clergy in charge of a mission Assistant - full time member of the clergy serving under the authority and direction of the Rector Canon - Assistant clergy serving on a cathedral or diocesan staff, or an honorary title conferred by the Bishop Priest-in-Charge - member of the clergy serving part time, often in an interim capacity and responsible for sacerdotal ministry Associate - member of the clergy serving part time and under the authority and direction of the Rector or Vicar. 148 Minutes of 47 th Annual Convention The Forty Seventh Annual Convention of the Diocese of Central Florida began with the registration of delegates at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, January 22, 2016 in the Tiger Cafe at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, 5625 Holy Trinity Drive, Melbourne, Florida. The Celebration of the Holy Eucharist began at 4:3-15 p.m. in the Scott Center auditorium. The Right Reverend Gregory Orrin Brewer was the Celebrant and The Reverend Charles ( Chaz ) L. Howard, Ph.D., University Chaplain at the University of Pennsylvania, was the Preacher. TOWN HALL MEETING A Town Hall Meeting concerning 2015 General Convention Resolutions C001 and D013, setting a mandatory diocesan assessment of up to 15% effective in 2019, was held in the Scott Center auditorium beginning at 5:45 p.m. The Right Reverend Gregory O. Brewer, Bishop, The Reverend Canon Timothy Nunez, Canon to the Ordinary, and Mr. Earl Pickett, Diocesan Administrator, led the meeting. Canon Nunez presented the two Resolutions and then gave an overview of how the Diocese s current plan of giving to The Episcopal Church evolved. The floor was opened for questions from convention delegates. At the conclusion of the Question and Answer session, Bishop Brewer thanked the participants for their questions and comments, noting that today s Town Hall Meeting is the beginning of the conversation. He invited delegates to follow up as groups or as individuals, sharing their thoughts and suggestions with him. The Town Hall meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m. FIRST PLENARY SESSION The Forty-Seventh Annual Convention of the Diocese of Central Florida was called to order by The Right Reverend Gregory O Brewer, Chair, at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, January 23, 2016 in the Scott Center Auditorium. The Reverend Canon Josh Bales led the Opening Worship. The Chair announced the election by the Diocesan Board of Mrs. Sarah Caprani as Secretary of Convention, the appointment of the Honorable Council (Butch) Wooten as Chancellor and Parliamentarian of this Convention and the appointment of the Honorable William A. Grimm as Vice-Chancellor. Mr. James Landi, Interim Head of School, welcomed visitors and members of the Convention to Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy and thanked the many people who helped in the preparations and activities surrounding the meeting. Miss Taya Britten, member of the Senior class at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy and Chair of the Credentials Committee reported that of a possible 284 clergy entitled to vote in this convention, 165 had registered. 95 are needed for a quorum. There was a quorum in the clerical order. Of a possible 259 lay delegates, 218 had registered. 87 are needed for a quorum. There was a quorum in the lay order. 158 Appendix DIOCESE OF CENTRAL FLORIDA Rules of Order Adopted by the: Forty-Seventh Annual Diocesan Convention Date: January 22 & 23, 2016 RESOLVED, that this 47 th Annual Convention of the Diocese of Central Florida adopts the following rules: Delegates shall address their remarks to the Chair and state their name, in what capacity they are serving (i.e. lay delegate, clergy delegate) and the congregation or institution they represent. Debate on any motion/resolution shall be limited to 2 minutes for each speaker unless permission to extend debate is granted by the Chair or by a 2/3 vote of the Delegates without debate. Debate on any motion/resolution shall be limited to a total of 15 minutes unless permission to extend debate is granted by the Chair or by a 2/3 vote of the Delegates without debate No Delegate may speak more than twice on the same subject if any Delegate who has not spoken wishes to do so unless permission to speak is granted by the Chair or by a 2/3 vote of the Delegates without debate. Amendments to resolutions shall be in written form with a copy delivered to the Chair and the Secretary of Convention (and if possible amendments should be delivered in an electronic format). 159 Appendix Any amendment proposing an increase to the budget must include an equal decrease in one or more budget line items or indicate an appropriate increase in income. The following rules will apply for elections: When there are staggered terms for any office the person(s) receiving the highest number of votes shall be elected to the longest term in the earliest ballot in which any election takes place. The person(s) receiving the next highest number of votes in that ballot or subsequent ballots in which there is an election shall receive the next longest term. This process shall continue until all terms are filled. When there is only one nominee remaining on the ballot for an office, the Chair will declare that nominee elected to the appropriate term. On ballots subsequent to the first, the name of the nominee receiving the least votes for each office on the previous ballot shall be removed. Ballots which are marked in a manner which is unclear to the Chair of the Committee on Nominations and Elections or do not accord with the instructions given by the Chair of the Committee on Nominations and Elections (for example: voting for more candidates than instructed) will be invalidated. 160 Mark Twain Appendix C Bishop Brewer s Address It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. This phrase particularly hit home as I was trying to write a response to the recent meeting with the archbishops at Canterbury. I was hesitant. The reason I was hesitant was because my response is a mixture. A Far Reach May I make a brief confession? I still want to be liked. There's some part of that place inside me that, quite frankly, is sinful, but then there's another part of understanding its importance the fact that what we're doing now is actually history-making. I knew that what I wrote would be read by people from all over the Communion. In fact, Canon Nunez has reported to me that once my response was posted on the diocesan Facebook profile, it had over 1,000 hits in two hours. Within a couple of days, that went to 3,000. This is not to mention it being posted on Twitter and re-posted on other websites. I've had reports from other people in other countries as well as people in and around the U.S. Episcopal Café is now cataloging all of the responses by various dioceses and bishops here in the United States. I wanted to write a response because I knew I had a responsibility to do so. I hope, in fact you've read it. As one of the small group of bishops in The Episcopal Church who are committed to biblical orthodoxy, most of us known as Communion Partner bishops, we are in fact being watched, both nationally within The Episcopal Church and internationally. Our voices are heard. Most in The Episcopal Church do not agree with us, but they still want to know what we think. Communion Partner Bishops Just prior to Christmas, three of us Communion Partner bishops spoke directly with Archbishop Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and his assistant for Anglican Communion Affairs, Bishop Precious Omuku of Nigeria. Then one week later, Archbishop Josiah Fearon, the Secretary-General of the Anglican Communion, flew into Orlando on holiday with some Nigerian friends. Just after I got home for Christmas, I got an one week before he was to arrive announcing the fact that he was coming. Protocol dictates that at that point, you make room. He is an archbishop, after all. There's a place for him to serve. Ascension Orlando, because he was way down in that part of town, was kind enough to host the archbishop. Jim Sorvillo yielded the pulpit to him on Christmas Eve, twice, in two different services of 45-minute sermons each, to applause at the end each time. I don't know many rectors who would do that. Thank you very much, Father Jim and the people of Ascension, for your outstanding hospitality. 159

161 Appendix C Archbishop Fearon and I met the next day for an extended meal where we talked openly and frankly about our life together in this Communion. We related well personally, and I had a wonderful time. I've already invited Archbishop Fearon back to share with us about Anglicanism and its future, given the things that are occurring. Mending the Nets I tell you these things to describe what I believe is the pivotal role that Communion Partner bishops in The Episcopal Church are now playing in the wider Communion. It s behind the scenes. You don't hear about many of these things, nor should you. We're not trying to make publicity. We're instead committed to mending the nets, to seeing how God might want to use us and others in that process in the midst of all that is transpiring. While The Episcopal Church as a whole is presently bearing its "consequences, to quote the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Anglican climate statement, Communion Partner bishops are in most places still given a very warm welcome. We are playing an active role in the very fabric of the Anglican Communion. It's not anything we would have thought, but the door has been opened. This is the time for our diocese to be more involved both in the life of The Episcopal Church and in the wider Anglican Communion, not less. That speaks to why I am going to the New Wineskins Conference on Global Missions this April, the largest missions conference within Anglicanism of its kind in the United States. I am looking forward to our being there. Why? Anglicans and leaders from around the world will attend. Father Loren Fox is organizing a team from this diocese to attend. If you're interested, I would urge you to get in contact with him. This is also why our deputation from the Diocese of Central Florida was so deeply involved in the General Convention of The Episcopal Church this past June. It was hot in Salt Lake City in more ways than one, but our team served us extraordinarily well, speaking clearly, compassionately, strategically building relationships and friendships across theological aisles. Worship was often inspiring and uplifting. I chaired the Committee on Evangelism and Communication for the entire Convention with representatives from around the church, including Michael Curry, then bishop of North Carolina. As a result of the work of that committee, more than $2 million was committed to evangelism, an historic record. Fully Engaged We biblically orthodox Episcopalians from various dioceses across the country continue to take our rightful place as full members. Not marginalized, not cranky, not isolationists, not afraid, but prayerful, winsome, and deeply involved. It was because of the witness of these dioceses that a resolution fully supporting those who could not support same-sex marriage rites was passed by 160

162 Appendix C large margins in both the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies. I am profoundly indebted to our team. I want to say publicly thank you, deputies, for your outstanding work this past summer. Convention, you were represented extraordinarily well. All of this history that is in front of us, the pivotal changes that are happening within the life of a global Communion, the role that we are being asked to play, all of this feeds into the passion that I have for obeying the new canon that calls for each diocese to give 15 percent of its income to the wider church by Besides, I must tell you it would be extraordinarily hypocritical for me as bishop to champion a $2 million commitment to evangelism in the national church budget, an historic record, and then say, "No. We really shouldn't be giving the money." All right? I'm not sure I could serve in those kinds of public positions if I felt that way. And I ve made a vow, as I made a point yesterday, to obey this canon. It was part of my ordination vows. That alone is reason enough to obey it. I also support it because of this pivotal moment that God has given us in the life of Anglicanism. Canterbury and others within the Communion respect us precisely because we are fully committed to full engagement both in the wider Episcopal Church and in the Communion. We have not walked away. We, as has been said before, are threatening to stay. In many ways, one of the points of our strategic plan, which is to take our place in the councils of the church, has been more deeply realized than ever before. God s Mission for You Our strategic plan also calls us to reach out to our neighbors. I see this happening in the life of our diocese. It's just such a joy. From Holy Cross, Winter Haven's Boy Scout troop, which is bringing in new members into their church; to St. Gabriel's, Titusville's commitment to feeding literally hundreds of families per week; to Trinity, Vero Beach's outreach to St. Edward's School by supporting a Chaplain, Tommy Matthews; to a beachside surfer's mass on the afternoon on Sundays sponsored by St. Peter the Fisherman, New Smyrna Beach; to the formation of a more contemporary service in the evening of Sunday at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke, led in large part by Father Josh Bales, whom you experienced and have gotten to know earlier, committed to reaching out this huge influx of primarily young adults who are moving into downtown Orlando. If you haven't been, it's changing by the day. I could be happy to go on and on, but more and more, our congregations are seeing themselves as missionary stations called by God to bring the gospel in word and deed to the communities where God has planted them. This is, in fact, Anglicanism's vision for the parish church. And it's one that I support without reservation. To quote David Bosh's exceptional book, Transforming Mission, "It is not the church which undertakes mission. It is the mission of God which constitutes the church." 161

163 Appendix C In other words, reaching out with the gospel is the heart of why the church exists. The key question for each of us to pray and ponder is (and if there isn't anything else you hear in this sermon, write this down) what is God's mission for you both at a personal as well as a congregational level? What is God's mission for you? To put it another way, why aren't you in heaven right now? There's a purpose for this. We're not here by chance. We are living in a divine appointment that God has determined for us. It is not aimlessness. It is not meaninglessness. It is not random. What is God's mission for you? Our Diocesan Staff It is to that end that our diocesan staff serves you, our congregations. Maybe it s Earl Pickett s fine work in finance, health care, and building inspection. He does so with just the best dry sense of humor. Just a couple of days ago, my head was spinning with everything that needed to be done to get ready for this weekend. I was writing some things up, and I couldn t remember someone's name. It was driving me nuts. Finally, I walked in to Earl and Beverly's office and said, Beverly, please tell me the name. Of course, she knew it right away. Earl, quick on the draw, walked up right then, extended his hand, and said, Bond. James Bond, just like that. That s just the kind of guy he is. Or maybe it s Kristi Alday's work as Archdeacon extraordinaire and the fine work of the Institute for Christian Studies, or Canon Tim Nunez's diligent work with vestries, clergy, and especially in search processes, or Canon Justin Holcomb s recruiting and raising up of new leaders, or our excellent support staff Erick Perez and Marilyn Lang, who make sure that when you call, you find the right person and get the right information. We, as a diocese and staff, are committed to serving you in the calling God has given you. In fact, at this point, I'd like to briefly introduce our two newest staff members for those of you who have not met them. Here s my new executive assistant, Sarah Caprani. Sarah, are you here? She's hiding behind the curtain, and I can say without hesitation that she s a delight and a godsend. As well as Caroline Miller, who is Justin Holcomb's executive assistant, right over there. I know Justin is very pleased to be working with Caroline. She always has great contributions when we have our times of Bible study and prayer, which we do on a weekly basis. In fact, again, staffs of congregations, do you take time to pray? To read the Bible? To share your life together? Your congregation is the poorer if that's not true. My vision and understanding of what a church staff ought to be is a Christian community that shares life together, prays together, and studies together. It becomes the community into which the larger community of the parish and then the larger community at large is invited to share. They're not the gossipy insiders. They're actually the chief servants. I can say without hesitancy that that's certainly true for the staff of the Diocese of Central Florida. Our 162

164 Appendix C commitment to serve our neighbors means serving our churches with the best clergy possible, not only for our present congregations but also for future church plants. Strategic Growth Both endeavors, raising up new clergy and future church plants, have been given serious effort in I've ordained 12 people to the diaconate in 2015 and 10 to the priesthood. That's twice the number to the priesthood as in the previous year. We presently have 42 in our ICS program either studying in the classroom or online. We have 12 presently studying for the priesthood. We have 11 recipients of the Timothy Fund, which this past year totaled $40,783, and the diocese also gave out promissory notes for theological education totaling $28,500. We have seminarians at Trinity School for Ministry, Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, Virginia Theological Seminary, Nashotah House, Seminary of the Southwest, Sewanee School of Theology, and the Anglican House of Studies at Duke, as well as a number who are doing local work at Reformed Theological Seminary and Asbury Seminary before completing an Anglican studies program at one of our Episcopal schools. We have so far 32 people signed up to attend our spring seminar on exploring ministry called BACAM. Just this past Thursday at the Diocesan House Eucharist, I confirmed three young adults who will be pursuing ordination in The Episcopal Church. They were coming from other church traditions. Their presence, along with numerous other young adults who have recently been ordained, tells me that God has a future for The Episcopal Church in Central Florida. I want you to know that I am delighted to be a part of it. There are clergy who, when they hit my age range, feel like all they ought to do is just hold on and coast until they hit 72, which is the age of mandatory retirement. That sounds awful to me. You might as well tell me, Just go spend the rest of your time playing golf. It's not that I'm against golf. It's just that there's so much ahead of us. I'm really excited. I have not slowed down, and I have no intention to. And here in Central Florida, we still need more clergy, especially Latin Americans, African-Americans, and people who are bilingual in English and Spanish. Presently, Canon Holcomb is working on the possibility of theological education courses being offered in Spanish at our own Canterbury Center, both for continuing education for our Spanish-speaking clergy as well as easy access to theological education for people in our Spanish-speaking congregations. I'm also in touch both locally and online recruiting people of color who are interested in coming to the Diocese of Central Florida. I want to tell you; we have clergy really interested in coming to our diocese. In a very good way, the word is out. It is positive. You see, if we're going to reach the world that is moving to Central Florida, our clergy team must reflect the diversity of those who are coming. If not, we look more like a club and less like 163

165 Appendix C the Kingdom of God. The diocese has also employed as a consultant the Rev. Dr. Winfield Bevins, who is a specialist in church planting on the faculty of Asbury Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. Dr. Bevins is assisting a small team of people in the diocese to work at a strategy for church planting that we will be able to deploy very soon. Planting new churches is not easy work. I've done it. It requires diligence, much prayer, sacrifice, and strong leaders, but I am confident that God is using Dr. Bevins to help us think about this challenging and important task. We are counting the cost and trying to think about it strategically. There's nothing more disheartening than seeing a church plant fail, because people work so hard. That means we need to do the things we need to do to make sure our churches have every opportunity to succeed. Personally, I've made 40 visits to local congregations in this diocese. I have baptized four people. I have confirmed 184 people. I received 83. And 41 have reaffirmed their baptismal vows. Intentional Relationships I've traveled quite a lot this year; to be honest, more than I would like. To General Convention, to the installation of the presiding bishop at Washington National Cathedral, to meetings of the Province IV bishops, the province being Southeastern U.S. I participated in the Sewanee Board of Trustees meeting and the consecration of the New Virginia Theological Seminary chapel, where the Archbishop of Canterbury both preached and presided as well as hosting at our Canterbury Center. I also attended a meeting of the Communion Partner bishops, which included special guests Archbishop Mouneer Anis of Egypt and North Africa and Archbishop Datuk Bolly anak Lapok of Southeast Asia. On most visits, Laura Lee travels with me, both to my joy and to the joy of the congregations, who are always glad to see her and whatever hat she chooses to wear for the occasion. I want to publicly acknowledge to you what I have said to her on more than one occasion: it would be difficult, if not impossible, to do this job without her. I am profoundly grateful. Laura Lee and I continue to use the home that God has given us on a regular basis for all kinds of hospitality, including the ongoing joy of hosting clergy-spouse dinners that are always good times for building fellowship, friendship, and having conversations on something other than Well, how many people are coming to your church? That's fostering friendship and playing down the competition. From clergy dinners to Cursillo to serving together both in our congregations and across the diocese, in mission and support, we are in fact finding ways and other strategic points of our plan to strengthen our relationships with one another. A Church for Our Future For the final part of this address, I'm going to hone in a little bit about what's 164

166 Appendix C happening with youth. I would like to talk to you about what I'm hearing from them about what they want in terms of a church for our future. Over this past year at youth events around the diocese, our young people were asked about what is important to them about church. Numbers of young people were willing to sit in front of a camera and just talk. I am grateful for their candor, and what they said can be a way of helping us to think about what kinds of churches we need to build for this future generation. As many have said, young adults are different. That means we need to think of new cultural ways about what it means to be church together. If we're going to make room for people who were different from us, whether we're talking about race or whether we're talking about age, it is critically important that we build volunteer teams that look like the people we're trying to reach. If a young person walks in and all they see are people who look like me, what they will think is There s not room for me here. It's incredibly important. The same is true if you're trying to reach out more multi-culturally into your neighborhood. I was very curious to hear what these young people would have to say. I'm very thankful to Steve Schneeberger, who continues to be our diocesan consultant for youth ministry, for helping organize this over the course of the past year. Safe Zone What I want to do is just show you a clip and then make a comment on it. The first is from Sarah of St. James, Ormond Beach. [Sarah speaking] For me, church is a place where it's almost my safe zone. No matter what's going on throughout the week, where I've been, who I've been dealing with, I know that I can just come to church and everything kind of stops for me. It s a place where I really get to connect with God, and I get to be around people who care for me and want me to live up to be the best that I can be every day. It's almost like having a second family. It's really great. Safe zone This is distinct because quite honestly, the last thing most people think about when it comes to church is a place that is called a safe zone or a safe space. In today's PC climate, safe zone can mean everything from protecting sensitive students from disturbing ideas to a prejudice-free zone where all are welcome. Could we ask God to help us find ways to be not only a loving family for people like us but also a loving family for our sisters and brothers who do not look like us? Can our common commitment to Christ bind us together so deeply that people are free to reveal their true selves in a congregation, going a little bit better or deeper than, How are you? Well, I m fine. Can we discover, in even more powerful ways, the love of Christ that brings forgiveness and mercy to our deepest wounds, calms our most persistent fears, and creates an atmosphere where people can tackle even the most difficult ideas with the wisdom of the gospel? What does it mean? What would it mean for your parish to be a safe zone not only for people but also for difficult ideas? 165

167 Appendix C Full of Joy The second video is from Bradley of Nativity, Port St. Lucie: [Bradley speaking] Hi, Bishop Brewer. My name is Bradley from the Church of the Nativity. I feel like church has done a lot for me over the years of my life. I feel my church has made me grow closer to people that I never knew before, that I wouldn't normally talk to on the streets but in church, I talk to them no problem because the community here is just friendly and happy and everybody's enjoying it. It's full of joy. And also, I'm happy that it brings my family together, too, because not every time people take time to go out with their family and go to church and everything. So I feel like it just brings people together in general. To be the home that Bradley describes requires a level of relationship that feels more like family and less like a civic organization. Most of our churches excel at caring for one another. In fact, if there's anything that mark the churches of our diocese, it s that we do our best to take the command to love one another seriously, and we do so with joy. The testimony of many is that they have come into our congregations and felt welcomed and loved. Let us continue to grow together in our love for Christ and especially look at what we're doing to ask, in a very pragmatic way, When a visitor walks into our building, what do they experience? How do you, in other words, make the transition, which is culturally enormous for a non-church person, to walk into our highly literate, liturgically-based singing of stuff that is typically no younger than the nineteenth century? You allow that to happen through a prayer-soaked environment, a place where they encounter the living and risen Jesus Christ. Now, I say that not because I am heartily for contemporary worship. Yeah. I've lived praise-ness. I know what that's about. It has a lot more to do with relating to people and creating a welcoming environment where they belong than almost anything else. A Church That Welcomes Off-script, I just want to tell a story. When I was on the faculty in Pittsburgh, I was invited to be considered for a church in Philadelphia: Church of the Good Samaritan, Paoli. Laura Lee and I wanted to find out what kind of church it was, so we sent a friend of ours (now deceased), to go and check it out. Her name was Beverly Dodge, and Beverly Dodge was obese. She was our spy. An Episcopalian, Beverly knew her way around the church. We wanted to see how she would be welcomed. She had been to a number of different churches in her area where no one actually ever talked to her. Even at the passing of the peace, it was simply passed around her. More than once, someone got upset when she unknowingly sat in the wrong pew. That's happened to Laura Lee and me as well, by the way. Contrary to all of that, when she visited Church of the Good Samaritan, she 166

168 Appendix C parked in a parking space that was some distance (this is a very large church) from the entrance. Several people said hello to her before she ever got to the front door. She was handed all of the information about the church, including welcome information. Beverly took her place in the pew and in the opening liturgy, someone automatically handed her a prayer book that was open to the page where that service was starting. And it just kept going from there. She called us back, elated. Laura Lee and I knew right then that this would be a church that would be welcoming, because that is so incredibly important to us. Hospitality is in our genes, whether you're talking about a local church or having people over for dinner. As it worked out, they called us. Beverly, in fact, wound up making the drive (which was almost an hour) to come to that church because of the warm welcome she continued to receive in the life of that congregation. I want to tell you, when your church is accessible, the word gets out. People know if you're a congregation of people who genuinely demonstrate hospitality. Please make time. The Treasure in the Scriptures The third message is from Shah, also of Nativity: [Shah speaking] Hi, Bishop Brewer. My name is Shah, and I just wanted to say that the church basically helps me by giving me knowledge about Jesus Christ, and this book [holding up a Bible] has really helped me along with my life. It s helped me with several things and it gave me a lot of knowledge about Jesus and what s to come. [It] tells me how to live my life and how to get to heaven and have eternal life with Jesus Christ. We have a priceless treasure in the scriptures. They are God-breathed. They are the guide that points us to the complete sufficiency of Christ. They are the reliable promises that offer us assurance that we receive forgiveness and the promise of eternal life. They contain the pathway that leads us to heaven in a way that is true for no other book. However, very few of us Episcopalians use our Bibles so that we, to quote the Prayer Book, Read, mark, and inwardly digest, and we are the poorer for it. Some people think it's bad form to underline in the Bible. But the Prayer Book supports it. Sadly, it can be true that we don t use our Bibles in this way, just as true, in fact, for clergy as it is for lay people. Congregations, ask your clergy to preach the scriptures. Our churches can be places where people discover the treasure in the scriptures. There is a direct relationship between spiritual maturity and knowledge that will allow us both to know and apply the words of the Bible to our lives. Biblical knowledge and application must be at the center of our efforts in Christian education as well as our preaching if we are going to raise and produce mentor Christians. 167

169 Appendix C Prayer: No Idle Exercise The fourth video clip is from Grace from St. Paul's, Winter Haven: [Grace speaking] Hi, my name is Grace and I go to St. Paul s Church. I think the church means a lot to me because it means I can come here every Sunday and I can pray to Jesus, and I can pray for my friends and family, and I can pray for forgiveness for any of the sins I ve committed, and I can pray to Jesus, and I can pray for help. There is a rhythm of public prayer that carries us. That is, in fact, one of its key functions. It invites us into a place of prayer that is bigger than our own concerns. It is precious. It's a call to prayer that has as this agenda the very breath of the world. Look at the liturgy that we pray in ordinations. It's still happening. It's not a drawn document. This prayer, like this liturgy, brings us, along with our sister and brother parishioners, to the throne of grace. We pray for all sorts and conditions because, as we know, God loves all sorts and conditions, and we are all sorts and conditions. We are the ones who need the love of God in our lives as well as the people for whom we pray. Prayer is no idle exercise. Sometimes, we carry others in our prayers and sometimes, the community carries us by their prayers. But prayer is not just wishful thinking. It's God's avenue for accessing and applying the life-changing power of his presence to those for whom we pray. The next clip is from a movie called The War Room. The movie is not high art, but it is a powerful teaching lesson on an important aspect of intercessory prayer. This clip shows a woman by the name of Elizabeth Jordan, a wife who feels abandoned by her husband and whose daughter is being neglected. She turns to an older woman, Miss Clara, who begins to teach her that the answer is not found in retribution and anger but in intercession: [Miss Clara narrating] There s no magic in the location you pray, but Scripture does say to go into your inner room and pray in secret, and your heavenly Father, who sees what s done in secret, will reward you. Now get rid of any distractions, and focus your heart and mind on him. Acknowledge that he is God and that you desperately need him. Now, be grateful for your blessings, but lift your needs and requests to him. If you ve got something to confess, then confess it. Ask him for forgiveness, then choose to believe him when he says that he loves you and will take care of you. Then pray for the heart of your husband, your daughter, and anyone else that the Lord brings to your mind. And don t rush it. You take your time. And then you listen. As I said earlier, prayer is no idle exercise. God has chosen you and me by planting within our hearts the power of the Holy Spirit so that when we speak things in prayer, God chooses to begin to move in a way that reflects what he is 168

170 Appendix C doing in us. I want to tell you; it is the joy of my life to be a vessel of intercession. Even when I end up in a nursing home and I can no longer speak or travel, I will still be there with my Bible, my prayer book, and my care list. Because that is the work to which I have been called as a Christian. Not as a bishop or a priest but as a Christian, demonstrating through those intercessory prayers the very priesthood of Christ, which is God's call for all of us as believers. Prayer is not just meant to be an exercise for the more spiritually athletic. Prayer is meant to be the call that he has chosen to give us to make a difference in our world. I cannot tell you how important it is. Growing churches teach. They teach church members how to live in a way that reflects the power of the gospel. God has provided a way, through prayer, to be a channel of God s supply into the lives of other people, our communities, and our world. Changed Lives that Others Notice The next video clip is from Ben of St. Paul's, Winter Haven: My name is Ben; I go to St. Paul's. The church has affected me in, I guess, my appearance. Going to church every Sunday and every Wednesday has just when people look at me, they say they see God around me. They see the power and the love. And I guess the way I impact the people around me, my friends, my family, my church, people that come to church with me, I affect them. I guess I've gotten a greater love for the church, for God, for my youth group, for my bishop, meeting the bishop on a couple occasions. It's just changed me. What does this wonderful combination of family relationships, formative worship and sacraments, biblical teaching and life-upholding prayer produce? It produces changed lives: changed lives that other people notice. What do people notice? They notice compassion. They notice servanthood. They notice joy. Those whose lives have been changed are the people who are quick to pick up the chair when it's falling. The ones who are more than willing to help out in the kitchen even if they're not assigned to it. They re the ones who are willing to make a difference in their communities. Even if they never breathe the name of Jesus, there is something about them that reflects the compassion and the servanthood of Christ. That's what people see in them. And when I met him at St. Paul s, that's what I saw in Ben, too. The last video clip is from Zach from Good Shepherd, Lake Wales. As a Christian, I know that I can, I will, consult [the church] and ask them and listen to what they have to say. [I will] understand and absorb that knowledge because certain readings say things like, Love the children like Jesus loved the children. I now love the children in both the community and the church. 169

171 Appendix C Like, [serving as] part of the Lake Wales Care Center, I do that and I take that [as] more valuable because of what Father Tom has taught me and what I ve seen as being an acolyte. All this stuff that the church has offered me has now brought insight that I could never find anywhere else and I couldn't ever be more proud of. So, the church, it gives so much to the community and unfortunately, sometimes, these communities don t understand that. But we know as Christians that our church is invaluable and nothing could ever replace it. A Family with a Future God is actively at work in the Diocese of Central Florida. These are our kids. God is doing something. God is using us to have an impact in central Florida, in our communities, and in the wider church. God is using our congregations to touch the places where we live. New people are being raised up into ministry. And a new generation is receiving what we have been so blessed to inherit. People's lives are being changed by the power of the gospel. Why would you want to be anywhere else? Are there warts and challenges? Sure there are. You see, that's a part of what it means to be a global as well as a diocesan family. I haven't found the perfect church. I've given up trying. But we, the Diocese of Central Florida, are a family with a future. A future that God has planned for us. We know because of God's mercy that there are divine appointments ahead of us yet to be revealed. And I, for one do not want to miss out on what God is doing. I bet most of you want to be there, too. Would you open yourselves up to God's future? Will you begin to think in fresh ways about what it means to be the church? Will you think again about what is God's mission for you and for your community? Will you say yes to this adventure? Let us continue to do this together. I thank God for what God is doing in and through us, especially right now. I thank you for the privilege of serving you as your bishop. Thank you. 170
