2 Bishop s Page Preston Mathena GOD IS ON THE MOVE AT HILLSVILLE P.H.C. Three years ago, an ongoing miracle of the Lord began at Hillsville Pentecostal Holiness Church. Little did Pastor Jeff and the congregation know the leaps and bounds at which God was going to move. Since April 2008, the church has grown from 11 to 140-plus in attendance on Sunday mornings, and our night services are anywhere from We give all the glory to God. In the beginning, Pastor Jeff and Tammy and the deacons hoped to fill the sanctuary. Now praise God we need a larger sanctuary! We are so humbled by God s blessings and we are ready to elevate to the next level God has for us. Pastor Jeff and several members have been asked, What are you doing to make that church grow? The answer to this question can be summed up in just a few words visitation and love! Hillsville P.H.C. is blessed with a pastor who visits! He visits those who call and those who don t call. He visits those he knows, as well as those he doesn t know. It s all about Jesus, and Pastor Jeff is obeying the call on his life, as a true servant of the Lord. It all goes to show that if you obey God, He will use you in a mighty way! Pastor Jeff is backed by a board of dedicated and faithful deacons, who share the vision that God has Front Row: Philip Lundy, Pastor Jeff Pickett Middle Row: Ray Fralick, Bruce Quesinberry, Richard Forrester Back Row: Mickey Surratt, E.G. Bolen given him. We are a team at Hillsville, and there is no I in team. Together, everyone achieves more than one person can alone. That s what teamwork is all about. The church has purchased 14 acres on Virginia Street, which borders the VDOT station. On Thursday, April 7, Pastor Jeff, the deacons and several members of the church family had a groundbreaking ceremony and celebration to place a sign on the property. During our building venture, we will hold onto this scripture, And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Matthew 16:18). Although the church on Main Street has had a total facelift and is beautiful, we need a larger church to meet the needs of the people both adults and children of all age groups. We believe our God is big and He has given a mighty vision for what lies ahead. Pastor Jeff and Tammy, along with all the members at Hillsville, would like to thank all the other churches and everyone who comes out in support of our fundraisers, church services and singings. And a special thanks for all the prayers. Voice of the Appalachian Conference of the IPHC

3 MESSENGER (USPS ) with Amy Lambert July 9 BLUEFIELD, WEST VIRGINIA Vol. 72 June 2011 No. 10 Executive Editor Preston Mathena STAFF Phone Oak Grove Avenue Dublin, VA EVANGELISM & WORLD MISSIONS ministries Larry Meadors 5847 Oak Grove Avenue Dublin, VA DISCIPLESHIP MINISTRIES Ron Fredericks 5847 Oak Grove Avenue Dublin, VA When God gave Amy Lambert a vision for Invasion in early 2010, it was bigger than anything she could have dreamed on her own. With faith and courage, Amy rented a stadium that seated 15,000 before any funds had even been raised. God gave Amy Lambert a vision of an outdoor concert to reach the lost and dying in her community of southwestern Virginia. The concert would reach out to the untouchables, those most would be afraid to approach, a group of which Amy used to be a part. From an early age, she lived a life of drugs, alcohol and deep sin. At the age of 19, Amy found herself lying in a hospital bed, close to death, completely hopeless, broken and addicted. It was during this dark hour that Jesus Christ became real to her, as He extended His hand of love and mercy. She made a decision, which would forever change her life, as she finally surrendered her will and life to Christ. Because of this complete turn-around in her life, Amy is passionate about lost souls. Her target audience for Invasion was the addicted and others who were bound by life-controlling issues. To reach this group, she would have to use unconventional methods. Proof of God s provision, within weeks she had not only met, but exceeded, her $50,000 budget making it possible to host the event completely free of charge. The gift of eternal life was freely given to us, so it s an amazing opportunity to be able to share it free of charge, making it accessible to everyone, said Lambert. On July 10, 2010, Invasion took place in Bluefield, West Virginia. Brian Head Welch, former guitarist of the heavy metal band Korn, headlined the event, along with December Radio and several other Christian rock bands. On that day, Amy Lambert saw all the hard work and planning come to fruition. Hours before the gates were opened, the line was already two miles long. Around 8,000 people attended the concert that night, including 400 volunteers. Later, Lambert was quoted as saying, They came with purple hair, tattoos and piercings. It was beautiful! These people would never have stepped into a normal church service, but they would come to a free rock concert. I m just glad they got to hear the message of Christ preached! Invasion also hosted a large number of prevention and recovery groups who were on site, connecting with the audience and offering available help to anyone who desired it. This year, Amy is believing God for an even greater turnout. The event will take place in Bluefield, West Virginia, on July 9. In addition, they will be expanding to Pikeville, Kentucky, on September 24. Again this year, Brian Welch will headline the event, also joined by Eowyn, a female fronted rock band. Adding something new this year, rappers Thi sl and The Rep will be joining the line-up. Invasion is an opportunity to evangelize communities, reach the hopeless and strengthen the body of Christ. This event cannot take place without the prayers and support of the local churches. For more information, visit Article submitted by Nicole Branch. 4 World Missions & Evangelism Larry Meadors APPALACHIAN CONFERENCE MISSIONS AND EVANGELISM MINISTRIES It has been five years since my family stepped out in faith to plant a church in Waynesboro, Virginia. We did not know very much about starting a new church then, and today not much has changed. However, on a serious note, we are having the time of our lives. I am honored to be the pastor at New Beginnings Ministries PHC in Waynesboro. Pastor Ray & Christen McDaniel Meeting new people and seeing something develop from prayer to reality is sometimes overwhelming. I do not mind sharing with you that our church is one of the friendliest, most encouraging and diverse churches I have ever WHAT A JOURNEY! BIENVENIDO been a part of. People from all walks have come through our doors and have made New Beginnings a part of their lives. It is amazing you plant and water, and God gives the increase. I am not saying it comes without hard work. There were times, especially in the first year, when our congregation consisted of my wife and two children. Trusting the Lord was all we had. Soon after that, a few more people joined our group. Starting with seven people, we reached out to the community of Waynesboro. With the help of the Buena Vista Church and Bishop Mathena, we were able to do direct mailing, newspaper ads and street ministry. Four years later, we have a music ministry, nursery, children s ministry and a teen ministry entitled 180 Live. Today, we are a growing congregation of 50-plus people, serving the Lord together. God is amazing and I realize more than ever that when you receive a word from God, you just have to live it and see his salvation do mighty things. Pastor Raymond McDaniel We would like to welcome Iglesia Nueva Vida Pentecostal and Iglesia Pentecostal Ebenezer to the Appalachian Conference! Pastor Abel Castro is transferring Nueva Vida as a member church. He has over 200 in attendance in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Also, Pastor Jeremiah Cruz is now ready to organize the Ebenezer Church, which has been planted in cooperation with the Staunton LifeFlow IPHC with Pastor Richard Hanley. 5 Discipleship Ministries DM APPALACHIAN CONFERENCE RON FREDERICKS changing lives On Saturday, April 16, amid the threats of rain and storms, 202 entries, involving approximately 331 young people from across the Appalachian Conference, gathered at Tree of Life Ministries in Lynchburg, Virginia. 6 Women s Ministries Kathy mathena THE MINISTRY OF JOSEPH LOOKS LIKE JESUS Once again, our annual bus trip headed to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This year we were privileged to dine in the home of an Amish family. We prayed, sang hymns and feasted on a delicious home-cooked meal. We will never forget the love we experienced with this precious family. Our main attraction was Site and Sound Theater, to see the story of Joseph. The Bible came alive as we watched Joseph being betrayed by his own brothers. We were in awe as camels ran past us and dancers in flamboyant costumes entertained us and our hearts were torn in two as we felt the pain Joseph went through at being rejected by his family. We could see Jesus in the life of Joseph. Jesus, just like Joseph, was rejected by his own. The world was hungry due to a famine in Joseph s time. But Joseph, led by God, was able to feed all that came to him. Jesus, sent by God, is reaching out to feed all that hunger and thirst for righteousness, by offering the Bread of Life. The second time Joseph s brothers came to buy food, he revealed himself to them as their brother, whom they had rejected. When Jesus comes again, the nation of Israel will receive the one whom they have rejected all these years. What a wonderful plan God had for Joseph s life, just as He has for each one of us. But Satan would like to spoil the plans God has for us, so he throws temptations our way to try to cause us to stumble and fall. In the New Testament, 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. Joseph fled from Potiphar s wife when she tried to seduce him. He didn t try to negotiate with her he turned and fled. He got out of there as quickly as he could. In the Greek, the word flee in Genesis 39:12 means to run away as fast as possible, to escape. Remember, God will enable you to walk out of the situation as easily as you walked into it. But you are the only one who can make the decision to jump through the escape hatch. If you are being tempted to respond in anger walk away. If you are tempted to get your feelings hurt easily stay away from the place of offense. If you are tempted to slip into laziness get up and get busy. If you are being tempted to do anything wrong It s time for you to run to God and not from Him. Your journey to freedom begins the moment you make the decision to jump through the escape hatch. Don t let Satan steal the wonderful life and plan God has for you. 7 World Intercession Network Donna Hankla What America Needs! Many challenges have faced America in the past few months. These include economic concerns, wars, protests, aid to countries suffering from natural disasters and corruption in key businesses. Border control and homeland security are issues, also. PRAYER is the answer! The nation needs PRAYER! Our leaders need PRAYER! This nation was built on prayer. The Supreme Court affirmed the right of state legislatures to open their sessions with prayer in Marsh v. Chambers (1983). Other examples include: The Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in President Lincoln proclaimed a day of humiliation, fasting and prayer in In 1952, President Truman declared an annual National Day of Prayer. In 1988, President Reagan signed a law that established the first Thursday in May as the National Day of Prayer. The Appalachian Conference participates with the Capitol Hill Prayer Partners in providing 24-hour prayer for this nation. Will you pray one hour a week for this nation? Prayer can be done in your home. Call the WIN Prayer Director to participate Men s Ministries Quent Baria YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Below is my message from last month s Messenger. If you read it before, please reread. If not, read on. I placed a plea for your involvement in our disaster relief efforts, should tragedy happen on our soil as it did in Japan. Unfortunately, we have sustained devastation throughout the southeastern U.S. with tornado outbreaks. The Appalachian Conference was hit in the Pulaski and Abingdon, VA regions. We have deployed our resources to Alabama, where the tornado devastation was the worst on U.S. soil since We need your help BEFORE we get another tragic reminder. As we continue to pray for the people of Japan through their terrific loss and season of extreme hardship, do you stop to think about what we (the IPHC) would do in such circumstances on our soil? Do you know about DRUSA? DRUSA stands for Disaster Relief USA, and is the arm of the IPHC that helps out in just such a disaster. Through our denomination and conference, we have great resources to help people in the event of a natural disaster on U.S. soil. The primary presence and focus of this ministry is our Mobile Feeding Kitchen, which can provide upwards of 6,000 hot meals a day! This 18-wheel unit is housed and initially deployed out of the South Carolina Conference. The Appalachian Conference plays a huge role in supporting this ministry. We provide a tow-behind trailer with a fully functioning mobile walk-in freezer. This unit is filled with up to five tons of fresh water for use upon arrival to the disaster location. Many other conferences contribute in other ways, such as debris removal equipment and teams, etc. Learn more about DRUSA at disaster. The only resource missing is you! Contact Jackson Overstreet, the Appalachian Conference DRUSA coordinator, today and get involved in this on-time, on-target ministry. Jackson Overstreet, 1708 Oakwood Street, Bedford, VA (540) Jovers2501@ verizon.net. It does not take long for people in the Kingdom to realize that they are to be an integral part of something much larger than themselves. Give us your greatest resource your time to add to our resources in this ministry. We can use your help, and hurting people need God s touch! JUNE 2011
