On Dec. 30, 2012, Pastor Walter Lee Wood preached his farewell message to the congregation that he has served for a total of 36 years. For 30 of those years, he served as senior pastor, and the last six years he served as an assistant pastor. We were able to surprise and honor him with a special retirement gift of a 2012 Chevy Colorado 4x4 truck. We made the announcement in November and managed to keep it a surprise with over 1,000 people truly a modern-day miracle! We wanted to honor this great man of God. 4 World Missions & Evangelism APPALACHIAN CONFERENCE MISSIONS AND EVANGELISM MINISTRIES Gary & Ann Robertson CROSS THE LINE I am writing to tell you that my soul is burning for the nation of Israel. I believe it is our duty to Cross the Line. To cross the line from Gentile to Jew. Over 2,000 years ago Jesus crossed the line from Jew to Gentile. He chose not only to save His own people, but also to save all mankind. He literally CROSSED over. He laid down His life on the cross for us all. He CROSSED the line from Jew to Gentile. I believe now, as Christians, it s our time to return the favor. It s our time to cross the line from Gentile to Jew. The Lord has really given me a heart for Israel in the last year. I really can t explain it. I believe that God has placed it so much on my heart because the United States of America has turned her back on the nation of Israel. And now God is lighting a fire in us, as Christians, to stand in the gap for the nation of Israel when no one else will. Out of the whole IPHC, we have no missionaries in the nation of Israel as of today. However, that is changing. Gary and Ann Robertson from the Cornerstone Conference are raising support to go to Israel. Gary is a third-generation pastor. He pastored the same church in Martinsville, Va., for 30 years. He also has traveled to Israel over 20 times during his ministry and formed many important relationships in the country. I believe, with them, that God will supply all their needs to get them there. Our church, The Tower of Refuge in Dublin, Va., started out the year with the Robertsons sharing their vision. Our church responded and has committed over $400 a month in support for this couple. God told Abram in Genesis 12:3, I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you. I believe as we, the Appalachian Conference, come together as one to bless the nation of Israel that God will bless Our Conference Nation. I would like for you to pray for the Robertsons and pray to see how you and your church could support them as they CROSS THE LINE back from Gentile to Jew to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. Their hope is to be on the field in April. Please join me in praying and supporting them as they help save the nation of Israel. You can contact them by phone at or by at LetIsraelKnow@gmail.com. Their Support Account # is (26061S). May God bless you, your family, your church and our Appalachian Conference. Pastor Stacy Cope, Tower of Refuge MISSION TRIP 2013: ECUADOR A conference team is now coming together to share the gospel among the Shuar Tribe. The team will install a tent to be used for crusades and a church plant. Come and use your talents of drama, singing, music, children s ministry, prayer walking and evangelism. Applications are due as soon as possible to hold your place on the team. The dates for the trip are Sept. 27 Oct. 5; the cost is $1,600. GLOBAL BANQUETS Please remember to attend a district missions banquet of your choice during the period of March This is a great opportunity to hear from the IPHC World Missions staff and missionaries. 6 Women s Ministries Kathy mathena Greetings FROM TAMé LAMBERT It s time to prepare for WM Day 2013! WM stands for Women s Ministries, and this day is a great opportunity to take some time and celebrate the women in our local churches. Our theme this year is Celebrate Amazing Women. We hope you will be inspired to celebrate every woman... not just the leaders, not just the up-front people... celebrate every woman. Our recommended study book for this year is You re Already Amazing by Holley Gerth. In the Introduction, Holley tells every woman a secret: You don t have to do more, be more, or have more. God is calling out to you: Dear daughter, come to me. You are weary and burdened. I will give you rest. You are ALREADY pleasing to me. This year s WM Day is officially scheduled for March 10, 2013, the second Sunday in March. However, you and your pastor are free to choose a date that will best suit your needs. Whether you choose to have your women take the entire service or a small portion of it, the important thing is to make it a special day that celebrates all the women of your church, wherever they are on their journey. On this special day, we ask that you receive a special offering for the ongoing support of Women s Ministries. Half of the offering will stay with your local WM, and half should be sent on to your conference WM. This will greatly benefit our local and conference WM programs. Thank you. There are many different tools to help you with this year s program. The following are available by going to WM Day Celebration Kit 2013 Red Carpet Program 2013 Sermon Outline coming in January! Amazing Women invitation Amazing Women bulletin cover Amazing Women bulletin insert If you are unable to print, they can be sent to you for a nominal fee. If we get everyone involved and invite friends and family, we can make this the best WM Day ever! Celebrating you! 7 World Intercession Network Donna Hankla FATHER, I THANK YOU THAT YOU HAVE HEARD ME! JOHN 11:41 As Jesus stood before the grave of Lazarus, he faced an atmosphere of doubt and disbelief. In her sorrow, Martha cried out, Master, if You had been here, my brother would not have died! (John 11:21). She thought it was too late for Jesus to help. Many people today think it is too late for God to help them. The main reason they don t pray is because they do not think God will hear them. If they only knew that Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega. He is the beginning and the end. He is able to see you through to victory (Revelation 1:8). The enemy, the devil, is a master at preventing people from praying. He will flood their minds with doubt and disbelief. He will say, What is the use? Why is the enemy so diligent to stop prayer? He knows that prayer will render him helpless. He knows the Word of God tells us, Resist the devil, and he will flee from you (James 4:7). HE HEARS US! Jesus took His eyes off the crowd. He took His eyes off the atmosphere of unbelief. He looked toward Heaven. He put faith into action when He stated, Father, I thank You, that You have heard Me. This faith, which was bathed in gratitude, was strong enough to raise the dead. Jesus CONFIDENCE that His Father heard Him brought life that day! MARCH 2013
8 MESSENGER (USPS ) Dublin, Virginia Periodicals Postage Paid at Franklin Springs, GA Address Service Requested I could never myself believe in God if it were not for the cross. In the real world of pain, how could one worship a God who was immune to it? I have entered many Buddhist temples in different Asian countries and stood respectfully before the statue of Buddha his legs crossed, arms folded, eyes closed, the ghost of a smile playing round his mouth, a remote look on his face, detached from the agony of the world. But each time, after awhile, I have had to turn away. And in imagination, I have turned instead to that lonely, twisted, tortured figure on the cross nails through his hands and feet, back lacerated, limbs wrenched, brow bleeding from thorn pricks, mouth dry and intolerably thirsty, plunged in God-forsaken darkness. That is the God for me! He laid aside his immunity to pain. He entered our world of flesh and blood, tears and death. He suffered for us. Our sufferings become more manageable in light of his. There is still a question mark against human suffering, but over it we boldly stamp another mark, the cross, which symbolizes divine suffering. The cross of Christ is God s only self-justification in such a world as ours. John R. W. Stott
