Carson Baethke Weston Miller Felicia Essick Shayna Zellaha Cassidy Smith B IBLE S TUDY/ PRAYER GROUP There will be no Bible Study/Prayer Group through the summer. S UMMER W ORSHIP Summer worship times will be Saturdays at 5:30 pm and Sundays at 9:30 am. This will begin the first Sunday in June. We ll resume the regular schedule on Sunday, August 23. W ORK D AY FOR P LAYGROUND EQUIPMENT We have a great new opportunity in front of us at First Christian. We have the need for a playground area. The property ministry would like to let everyone know that we have staked off some space behind the church for the new playground area. If you get a chance take a look out the patio doors at the location. WE NEED YOUR HELP We have a work day set up to prepare the fence that will surround the area, as well as the actual playground equipment. Saturday May 9am is the day. Rolls will be provided. June dates to be determined. There will be jobs for everyone, from digging holes to cementing the corner post in, to starting the assembly of the equipment. We also have a few jobs of general maintenance around the church. You will not be left standing around. Is this not a great! T HANK Y OU I want to thank everyone who came to my Graduation Party, and helped me celebrate my special day. I want to Thank the Kitchen Workers; Janet Clark, Alice Gaston, Shirley & Larry Clark. 2 The Spencer Christian Page 2 D ISCIPLES WOMEN/ CWF DISCIPLES WOMEN / CWF DW/CWF had no general meeting in May. Phyllis Hurdle, treasurer stated a balance of $2, Change of June CWF Group Meeting date and time! The morning, afternoon and evening groups will have a combined meeting at the church on Thursday evening, June 11th. We will have dessert at 6:30 with program at 7:00. Rick and Karmen Brown from Hope Reformed Church will be our guests. They were participants in their Hope Reformed Church mission trip to Haiti early this spring. The Disciple Women mission study this year has been Haiti. We are looking forward to the Browns sharing their experiences with us. We urge everyone, men included, to share this evening with us. Installation of officers for DW/CWF will be that evening. DW/CWF Executive Board will be June 4 th at 3:45PM at the church. DW/CWF general meeting will be June 11 th at 6:30 pm Rich & Karmen Brown speaking on Haiti. One of the coolest ways you can show our young people how much we love and support them is by sending them mail while they re away at church camp. Just send a little card wishing them well and telling them they re in our prayers. Here s who you can send mail to and when to send it (The dates listed are not the actual camp dates. Through FCC local outreach fund, donations, and help from local businesses, Kids 1 st offers baby needs (diapers, wipes, diaper creams, baby wash/lotion, etc) for a reduced cost to families once a month. Everyone qualifies (Limit per family) to purchase diapers, wipes and other supplies. Prices are subject to change. Kids First staredo on May 9th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., The next date is June 13 from 5:00 7:00 pm. Proceeds and donations will go to replenish the baby items for the next month. S UMMER MISSION TRIP: CORALVILLE & DES M OINES We will be taking a group on a mission to Cedar Rapids this summer from July While in Cedar Rapids we ll be staying at the Disciples Mission Station hosted by Coralville Christian Church and working on flood disaster recovery projects. We are also planning a day trip to Des Moines to enjoy Adventureland at the end of the trip. Youth ages 14 and up are especially encouraged to join us on this trip! 5 The Spencer Christian Page 5 I NVITATIONS In honor of the 50 th Wedding Anniversary of Deane and Margaret Anderson, their children request the pleasure of your company at an Open House on Sunday, June 21, 2009 from 2:00 4:00 (Program at 3:00). The Open House will be held at the church. Come & Go Bridal Shower For Chelsea Boernsen, June 6 th at the Church Fireside Room, 9:30 AM till Noon. Chelsea will be married on Aug. 8 th to Jacob Juza. V ACATION B IBLE S CHOOL 2009 ALL ABOARD! Once again First Christian students will participate in a day camp with three other local churches in a program provided by Ingham Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camp. This VBS experience is for students who have completed kindergarten through the fifth grade. It will run from June 15 through June 18 from 9AM to 2PM at First Congregational Church. If you are interested in attending please contact Deb Kimbell for a registration form or pick one up in the church office. VBS H ELPERS N EEDED In order to make VBS a success for our children I am in need of volunteers and donors. Please check out the sign up sheets to see how you might contribute to the experience for our young people when you send a holiday newsletter, you can let all of your family members write their own articles or stories. You can also include family portraits, children s school pictures, or photographs from family vacations. Think about what your family would tell each of your friends if you could see them face to face this holiday season. What would you most like to share? E LDER L AW SEMINAR Elder Law Issues for Older Iowans and their Caregivers. This is a free seminar sponsored by Iowa Dept of Elder Affairs and Iowa Legal Aid's Legal Aid for Older Iowans. The hospital is not allowed to tell us of patient admissions. Office Hours: Financial and Membership Secretary Mary Schomaker will be in the office on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8-12 and 1-5, and Thursdays from 8 - Noon. However, those times may be somewhat flexible, so call first if you need to see her. Custodian s Hours Dana Galm s day off is Saturday. If you need him to do something, please call ahead of time. His hours are flexible, but if he is not at the church, you may leave a message for him with someone else or on the answering machine. Newsletter Deadline will be the Tuesday before the last Sunday of the month with the exception of some months due to the holidays. July s deadline is June 25 th.
