1 S i d n e y H i s t o r i c a l S o c i e t y N e w s l e t t e r Preserving Our Heritage Sidney Historical Society Founded September 18, 2008 Sidney, Maine Volume IV, Number 8 August, 2011 Second Annual Sidney Historical Society Antique Car and Tractor Show by Kathi Smith, Chairperson At 6:30 am on July 31, 2011, the overnight showers stopped and a beautiful day dawned for the 2 nd Annual Sidney Historical Society Antique Car and Tractor Show at the Silver Spur Riding Academy. This year we expanded in every way: more sponsors, more trophies, more cars, more walk-ins, and our first offering of flea market space. Each year is a learning experience. Everyone pitched in and did their jobs whether it was parking, set up, food, flea market /crafts, registering and parking all the entries, or welcoming guests at the gates. We had a great crew lining up sponsors, and we had many vin this Issue: Car and Tractor Show (c) (3) letter Calendar... 5 August Meeting... 6 Drummond-Sawtelle Wedding Member Notes...8 more trophies in each class this year than last. Also, we had independent judging. In addition, we had quite a number of door prizes as well as a 50/50 to give away. We hope in coming years to increase the number of sponsors and trophy classes; to increase our advertising; to add to the number of tractor registrants; to attract some working demonstrations; to increase our craft/flea market area; and, of course, to review our layout and see if we can make some changes to make the experience all the more accessible and enjoyable. I want to thank all the sponsors and members who helped put on the show. Many antique car enthusiasts tell me they love our show because it is different from any other in the area in that it has an old-time community feel to it. In part they like that we offer trophies for classes from the turn of the century right up to the 1980 s. Other car shows focus on the later-year cars, lumping forty years of early auto making into one class. The fact that our show is held on grass also lends an old time feel to it. Next year, we hope to encourage some of our registrants to dress in period clothing, weather permitting. We are constantly thinking of ideas that will make us stand out from the many other car and tractor shows that are offered during the summer, so any and all suggestions are appreciated. Again, thank you to all the members who turned out to help and to all of those who came to see the cars and tractors. It was a great day! SHS

6 Page 6 by Janet Weymouth Sidney Historical Society s August Program SHS s Historical Research Committee presented a review of their ongoing research after the business meeting on August 11. Polly Furber and Jan Weymouth, co-chairs of this committee, each gave a summary of their progress. Polly showed us maps of early Sidney and the whole Pownalborough Courthouse area of early Pownalborough and Dresden. Most of Sidney s early settlers came up the Kennebec River from this area. Polly told about the early land grants and the land set aside for both proprietors and settlers. She showed maps of the ranges and lots thereon. Jan told about the very earliest settlers and had a chart showing one particular family, the Abiel Lovejoys, whose children married into many of the families of other early settlers. Of the 18 Lovejoy children, 16 grew to adulthood and married into the Densmore, Roberts, Smiley, Thatcher, Gray, Smith, Bacon, Townsend, Hastings, Sturgis, and Morse families. Charlene Frost and Charlotte Sawtelle, members of the Historical Research Committee, shared research they had done. Charlene gave a short talk that included interesting and entertaining advertisements and fillers from long-ago editions of local newspapers. Charlotte presented information about the residents and the deeds connected with lots 36 and 37 on the West River Road in Sidney. Historical Research Committee members are constantly researching the earliest settlers and deeds and also have begun to tackle some of the later arrivals, such as the Drummonds, Sawtelles, Shearmans, and Tanners. They welcome any family history and land records you might be able to share with them. SHS

7 Page 7 Drummond-Sawtelle Wedding Mamie Clark Bridesmaid Erna Myrtle Drummond Bride Ralph H. Sawtelle Groom Clyde Lyon Best Man May 17, 1903 A very interesting home wedding took place at the Drummond residence in North Sidney, Sunday, May 17, at 10 o clock A. M., when Ralph H. Sawtelle, son of Ambrose Sawtelle, and Miss Erna Myrtle Drummond, eldest daughter of Arthur T. Drummond, were joined in marriage by Rev. A. L. Lane of Waterville. The beauty of the quiet Sabbath morning, the opening blossoms in the nearby orchard, the singing of the birds, all were in harmony with the music of the wedding march and with a simple service. It is a somewhat unusual circumstance that the officiating minister acted in the same capacity at the marriage of the bride s parents which occurred over 20 years ago in Waterville at the residence of the late Dr. J. H. Hanson. Mrs. Sawtelle is a graduate of Coburn Classical Institute, where she was under Mr. Lane s instruction. The bride was prettily gowned in white muslin with trimming of lace, and carried a bouquet of white roses. Miss Mamie Clark acted as bridesmaid and Clyde Lyon as best man. Miss Mary Wheeler presided at the organ. The parlors were handsomely decorated with potted plants, evergreens and apple blossoms. Following the wedding, dinner was served to 20 guests. Among the numerous presents were a handsome easy chair, a beautiful china dinner set, parlor lamp, silverware, souvenir china, etc. Mr. and Mrs. Sawtelle left on the early train, Monday morning, for Boston, where they will spend their honeymoon. Both young people have many friends in this vicinity who extend their heartiest good wishes. From the Daily Kennebec Journal, May 23, 1903 Thank you to Sylvia Lyon. Ralph and Erna Sawtelle, perhaps just prior to leaving for their honeymoon trip to Boston
