Good News First Presbyterian Church October 2018 Where Every Member is a Missionary (985)
I love the fall; fall is perhaps my favorite time of the year. It s not just because the weather turns cooler, and there is a briskness in the air, and the windows can finally be opened. I love the fall because it s apple harvest time! I love apples: caramel apples, baked apples, apple cider, apple cakes, apple pies (particularly Dutch Apple pies), apples simply cut up for after dinner. I love fall because of all the big, fresh apples. My favorite type of apple is the Macintosh: soft, sweet, juicy, tender, delicious. But because they re so soft and tender, Macintosh apples don t store very well, so you can usually only find them in the fall at harvest time. My least favorite type of apple is the Red Delicious. I think that Red Delicious apples are misnamed: in my opinion, they re tart, tough, hard, and tasteless. Unfortunately, Red Delicious store very well and they re available all year long. With that prejudice of mine, my mother always wondered why I only ate apples in the fall, never during the rest of the year. To her an apple was an apple; to me the difference was as clear as night and day. But have you noticed all the new varieties of apples today: Gala, and Fuji, and Braeburn, and all the others? They ve been trying to create apples that blend the best qualities of the traditional apples. So now we have apples that are as almost as sweet as the Macintosh, and can be stored nearly as long as the Red Delicious. Some people object to these new varieties, preferring only traditional apple types; others celebrate and enjoy the newfound diversity. 2
In a way that s what we re trying to do in church: blending our traditional style with new ideas to bring out the best of both. The hope is that we can experiment and experience different varieties that different people can enjoy, that will last for a long time, and that will help us gather a bountiful harvest. Because in the end, the Orchard Owner will ask us how good our harvest was, not what varieties we harvested. Let s give him a good harvest. 10 Strange Phobias Ecclesiastes might say For everything there is a season, and October is the season of scares and frights. This focus on what frightens us is a custom has traversed cultures across Europe since ancient times. And as there is a season for everything, there is also a phobia for everything. According to surveys, most people have at least one phobia, or obsessive fear. The most common is fear of speaking in public, followed by fear of spiders. But here are some more unusual phobias I ve come across. I particularly like the fear of the clergy. Enjoy. Uranophobia- Fear of heaven. Levophobia- Fear of things to the left side of the body Lutraphobia- Fear of otters. Ranidaphobia- Fear of frogs, their movements & noises. Scriptophobia- Fear of writing in public. Textophobia- Fear of the feel of certain fabrics. Thaasophobia- Fear of sitting down or being idle. Xenoglossophobia- Fear of foreign languages, often with fear of foreigners (Xenophobia). Cyclophobia- Fear of bicycles. Genuphobia- Fear of knees. Hagiophobia- Fear of saintly images or holy things, churches, and clergy. Geniophobia- Fear of chins. Dendrophobia- Fear of trees. Porphyrophobia- Fear of the color purple. Pteronophobia- Fear of being tickled by feathers. Chrometophobia - Fear of money. (Another favorite) (Personally, I don t know anyone with a fear of money...) 10

Individual congregations are encouraged to utilize up to 25% of this Offering to connect with the global witness of Christ's peace. 19 COMING ATTRACTIONS You are invited to the baptism of Stella West Sunday, November 11 during worship Look for further details in next months newsletter. Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans living or dead but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. 19
COMING ATTRACTIONS Hanging of the Greens The first Sunday of Advent marks not only the start of the Advent season and the beginning of the church year, but perhaps more importantly, it means there s only four Sundays until Christmas! Traditionally, we adorn our church to celebrate the start of Advent. For the past several years, we ve had a progressive adornment, adding a few items each week to prepare ourselves for the Christmas season. However, there are a few things we need to put up early, like the tree. And we need your help for that! So, we re asking anyone who can stay after worship on Sunday, November 25, to help us put up a few items and pull everything out of storage. 20 The next Presbytery Meeting will be held on: Friday - Saturday October 19-20, 2018 At the Feliciana Retreat Center Registration: 8 a.m. Meeting Begins: 9 a.m. Pastor Keith will be attending on Saturday. Please notify the office if you wish to attend. Thanks.
COMING ATTRACTIONS Thanksgiving, which occurs on the fourth Thursday in November, is based on the colonial Pilgrims' 1621 harvest meal. For many Americans, the Thanksgiving meal includes seasonal dishes such as roast turkey with stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. The holiday feast dates back to November 1621, when the newly arrived Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians gathered at Plymouth for an autumn harvest celebration, an event regarded as America s first Thanksgiving. But what was really on the menu at the famous banquet, and which of today s time-honored favorites didn t earn a place at the table until later in the holiday s 400-year history? While no records exist of the exact bill of fare, the Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow noted in his journal that the colony s governor, William Bradford, sent four men on a fowling mission in preparation for the three-day event. Wild but not domestic turkey was indeed plentiful in the region and a common food source for both English settlers and Native Americans. But it is just as likely that the fowling party returned with other birds we know the colonists regularly consumed, such as ducks, geese and swans. Instead of bread-based stuffing, herbs, onions or nuts might have been added to the birds for extra flavor. Whatever the menu, we pray you will all have a blessed Thanksgiving! REMEMBER TO SET YOUR CLOCKS BACK Remember to set your clocks back on Saturday November 3. Daylight Savings Time ends Sunday, November 4. 21
