2 When we think about the 12 Apostles, we think of them as some of the highest ranking saints, who excelled not only in sanctity, but also in theological illumination. To think such a thing is true and fitting. However, we must remember that they didn't start out that way. In fact some were fishermen and common folk, who probably didn't have too much formal education at all. So how did they reach such an illustrious position in the Church? Of course, God helped, but He didn't just create holy robots. Some of the work was up to them. They put forth effort into understanding God and His Law and Commandments. In today's Gospel reading we see one example. They didn't understand one of the Lord's sayings and, instead of being embarrassed about their ignorance and acting as if they did understand, they simply asked, "What does this parable mean?" Remember that the Lord says ask and you shall receive. If we don't understand something about the Scriptures or our Faith, we need to ask. We must research and study and invest our time into finding the answers. God will not leave us in our ignorance, but will enlighten our minds and hearts and guide us down the path of salvation. ~ Fr. Joseph WELCOME: Let s welcome to our Parish our new Church Secretary, Jean Woolley. Jean has been hired to fill the position left by Anna, who has retired. Please make a point of greeting her and welcoming her to our family. Here is some information about Jean she chose to share with us: I was hired as the Church Secretary at Archangel Michael Orthodox Church and began working on October 8. It is a pleasure to be working with Father John and Father Joseph. All of the staff at the Church and Hall have been very welcoming. I hope to have a long tenure here helping Father John with anything I can do to help him as he guides this Church. I was born in Cleveland and attended Transfiguration school in what is now called Slavic Village. I lived just a few doors away from the church and school so I didn t get away with any shenanigans. I have two brothers and one sister and thirty four nieces and nephews (this includes their children of also). I was married at an early age and have three grown children. I also have two gorgeous granddaughters who are 16 and 12, that live in Maryland. One of my favorite hobbies is traveling. My husband and I cruised all over the Caribbean and thoroughly enjoyed all the places we visited. After my his passing, I continue to travel with a fabulous group of ladies. I try to go to Maryland 3 or 4 times a year to visit my granddaughters. It is a nice, easy drive for me and I enjoy the peaceful time in the car. I worked for Cuyahoga Special Education Service Center (part of Cuyahoga County Board of Education) for twenty five years. I learned much from both schooling and working with dedicated teachers of special needs children. Their patience with the children really inspired me. I know I have a lot to learn as the new secretary, but Anna Wolf is a great teacher. I m sure with Father s help I will be fine. I am pleased to be here and hope to serve the needs of the parish for a long time. 2

Q: A: Do Ouija Boards and Tarot Cards go against the teachings of our Church? As Orthodox Christians, we should never dare place our faith in anything other than our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Playing with Ouija Boards, Tarot Cards, or going to fortune tellers and psychics even if done simply in jest is contrary to the teachings of the Orthodox Christian Faith and could prove harmful to your spiritual growth and well-being. Prohibitions to this can be found in the Old Testament Book of Deuteronomy 18:10-12, as well as throughout the Canons of the Church. ~ Fr. John 4
