Joseph McCartney Cell: Cell: Church Office: Parish Website: GOSPEL MEDITATION The Resurrection of Christ is referred to often as bright and radiant. Indeed, this is the main theme of this Feast of Feast, as it stands in stark contrast to the dark and somber Lenten services we have been celebrating. During Great Lent, the vestments are a darker color and the lights are kept low. Now, as we celebrate Holy Pascha, the vestments are bright white, the lights are shining brightly and the faithful hold candles. The brightness of this feast is a reflection of Him who is the Light of the World, Jesus Christ, who we hear in the Gospel today is "the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world." (John 1:9) It is this true Light, Jesus Christ, who today has destroyed the darkness of sin, and has brought us all into His eternal kingdom, where we will forever be covered in the bright and radiant light of the True Sun of Righteousness. ~ Fr. Save the Date - June 1 -- Wednesday, June 11, marks the 25th Anniversary of Fr. John's Ordination to the Holy Priesthood. To celebrate with him on this auspicious occasion, there will be a banquet held in Fr. John's honor on Sunday, June 1. His Grace, Bishop Alexander will be with us for a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy with the banquet to follow. More information will be available after Pascha.

No sacrifice on earth could ever begin to compare to Christ's voluntary suffering, crucifixion, and sacrificial death in which He gave up His life for the world and for mankind's salvation. Yet our gifts to the Church are an indicator of our faith: showing our commitment to perpetuating the Good News of His Resurrection to the world via our humble gestures of love, thanksgiving, and gratitude unto God. XB SUNDAY SCHOOL: There will be no Sunday School on April 27 because of the FOCA Basketball Tournament. The last class will be Sunday, May 18. Q: What is the Artos? A: I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst. (St. John 6:35) One of the Church s most sacred and beautiful traditions during the feast of Pascha, is to bless a large, upright bread called the Artos a Greek term meaning leavened bread or cake. This special bread usually has a depiction of the Resurrection upon it and symbolizes the presence of the Risen Christ, the Bread of Life Who nourishes us with the food of His divine mercies. Near the conclusion of the Paschal Liturgy, the priest blesses the Artos with a special prayer and sprinkles it with Holy Water. The Artos is then placed on a small table before the Iconostasis where it remains throughout Bright Week. It is customary, whenever the faithful enter the Temple, for them to kiss the Artos as a way of greeting the Risen Christ. The Artos serves to remind us of all the events connected with the Resurrection, but is also in keeping with an ancient custom initiated by the Apostles. Following Christ s Ascension, whenever they sat down to an ordinary meal, they would leave a place at the head of the table empty for the invisibly present Christ and would set bread there. The Church therefore maintains this tradition by using this special Paschal bread to remind us of the Risen Lord Who is the Bread of Life. ~ Fr.
