1 Archangel the Archangel Michael Orthodox Church Be Welcoming Unto Others Hospitality is a hallmark of Christianity and being welcoming is part of our witness as Orthodox Christians. As followers of Jesus Christ we are called upon to welcome everyone into our churches, even from the highways and byways, the lame, the deformed (physically, spiritually, morally) everyone. Our Lord s gospel was not meant for the exclusive few, but for the many and the mission of the Church is to reach out and spread it to all peoples: Go, therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you (St. Matthew 28:19-20). Therefore do you part by being welcoming to those who visit or attend our services. Talk to them, get to know them, and include them in our parish family; and by all means, make them feel welcome! Very Rev. Fr. John Memorich Xavier Alexander Visocky Transitions As Many as Have Been Baptized into Christ... On Tuesday, July 26, Niculai Enochi, the iconographer who we contracted to beautify the church over 10 years ago, completed and delivered the final 10 Feast Day icons that we had been waiting for. Niculai delivered them to our church and they were on display in the lower level following the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, July 31. It is such a blessing to finally have these in our possession. With that, the Feast Day Icon Project is continuing. Additional donors have stepped forward and have requested specific icons. There are currently only three (3) icons left to be purchased. Each icon has been hand painted by our iconographer, Niculai Enachi. 4 QUESTION: What was the language of the Church in New Testament times? ANSWER: The colloquial or Koine Greek in which the New Testament is written. Christianity spread first in the Greek speaking world. The first writer to use Latin for theological discourses was Tertullian who began its use about 197 A.D. Fr. John THE MORE YOU KNOW: HOW OLD IS YOUR RELIGION? If you are a Lutheran, Martin Luther, an ex-monk of the Catholic Church founded your religion, in the year If you belong to the Church of England, King Henry VIII founded your religion in the year 1534 because the Pope would not grant him a divorce with the right to re-marry. If you are a Presbyterian, John Knox in Scotland founded your religion in the year If you are a Congregationalist, Robert Brown in Holland originated your religion in If you are Protestant Episcopalian, your religion was an offshoot of the Church of England founded by Samuel Senbury in the American colonies in the 17th century. If you are a Baptist, you owe the tenets of your religion to John Smyth, who launched it in Amsterdam in If you are of the Dutch Reformed Church, you recognize Mechelis Jones as your founder because he originated your religion in New York in If you are a Methodist, John and Charles Wesley in England founded your religion in If you are a Mormon (Latter Day Saints), Joseph Smith started your religion in Palmyra, New York, in If you worship with the Salvation Army, your sect began with William Booth in London in If you are Christian Scientist, you look to 1879 as the year in which your religion was born and to Mary Baker Eddy as its founder. If you belong to one of the religious organizations known as Church of the Nazarene, Pentecostal Gospel, Holiness Church or Jehovah's Witnesses, your religion is one of the hundreds of new sects founded by men within the past hundred years. If you are Roman Catholic, your church shared the same rich apostolic and doctrinal heritage as the Orthodox Church for the first thousand years of its history, since during the first millennium they were one and the same Church. Lamentably, in 1054, the Pope of Rome broke away from the other four Apostolic Patriarchates (which include Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem), by tampering with the Original Creed of the Church, and considering himself to be infallible. Thus your church is 1,000 years old. If you are an Orthodox Christian, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, founded your religion in the year 33. It has not changed since that time. Our Church is now almost 2,000 years old. And it is for this reason, that Orthodoxy, the Church of the Apostles and the Fathers is considered the true One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. 8 Fellowship of Orthodox Christians in America Celebrates its 90 th Annual National Convention in Chicagoland By Nick Ressetar Members and friends of the Fellowship of Orthodox Christians in America from around the country gathered at the Loews Hotel in Rosemont, IL, suburban Chicago, to celebrate the group s 90 th annual national convention from July 22 to 25. Presiding over the sessions was Marge Kovach of Clark, NJ, the national president. Joining the celebration were the FOCA s spiritual leader, His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon, together with three other members of the Orthodox Church in America s Holy Synod of Bishops: His Grace, Bishop Paul of Chicago and the Midwest, the host hierarch; His Grace, Bishop David of Sitka and Alaska; and His Grace, Bishop Daniel of Santa Rosa, CA. Following an open house/trivia contest on Friday evening, the business sessions commenced on Saturday morning with the opening procession and molieben served by Metropolitan Tikhon and assisted by V. Rev. Theodore Boback, the FOCA national spiritual advisor, and Archdeacon Joseph Matusiak, secretary to the Metropolitan. John Sutko, who recently retired after some 60 years as choir director, led the singing all weekend. Discussions focused on the Fellowship s future and ways to increase the membership base in light of natural attrition and smaller parish size. His Beatitude engaged in an open dialogue on the convention floor many delegates expressed their appreciation for the support and encouragement of the Orthodox Church in America and the hierarchs participating in the gathering. A highlight was the presentation of a $10,000 check to Bishop David from this year s Gift of Love project: Orthodox Christian coloring books for Alaskan children in the Yupik and English languages. Vespers was celebrated in the convention chapel by Fr. Boback and assisted by Deacon Peter Ilchuk. Saturday evening a dinner cruise was held on Lake Michigan but it came to an early end as storms moved across the area, making for a somewhat rocky ride! Metropolitan Tikhon concelebrated the Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning with his brother bishops and area and visiting clergy. His sermon centered on the Passion-Bearers SS. Boris and Gleb of Kievan Rus as well as the Russian Imperial Family who were canonized as passion-bearers by Orthodox Church of Russia. Carol Deerson, a past national FOCA president who is stepping down after 17 years of planning and running the national conventions, was honored with the presentation of the St. Innocent medal (bronze) by His Beatitude at the service s conclusion. A celebratory banquet marking the Fellowship s 90 th convention was held that evening at which President Kovach gave her address and then awarded four college scholarships. In his remarks, Metropolitan Tikhon commented on how the FOCA operates as one big family and noted the presence of several members from St. Peter and St. Paul Orthodox Church (then located in Chicago) whom he knew from the time when he first was received into the Orthodox Faith in Dancing followed. Unique this year was a youth council run concurrently with the convention and co-sponsored by the OCA s department of youth and young adults, the Midwest Diocese and the FOCA. Rev. Benjamin Tucci, FOCA Junior department chair, and OCA Youth Director Andrew Boyd, oversaw the youth activities throughout the weekend. Those participating had the opportunity to meet together for prayer, enjoy fun outings, and interact with Metropolitan Tikhon and the other bishops. Sponsoring the convention were the three Chicago-area FOCA chapters with Dennis Garlick serving as general chair. Displayed at the registration desk were group photos of past national conventions (dating back to the 1930's) and various souvenirs as well as photos of past national presidents (and a listing of their names and dates of service). The first convention at St. Alexander Nevsky Church in Pittsburgh, PA which organized the Federated Russian Orthodox Clubs (FROC) (as it was known until 1998), took place in November 1927 and (Continued on page 9) 8 The Archangel

9 elected Vladimir Prislopsky as national president. The gathering concluded with final sessions on Monday morning and a Powerpoint-style presentation from the youth council which was well received. After the election and installation of officers ceremony, delegates and friends formed the traditional circle, recited the FOCA motto Pray, Study, Toil, Be Temperate, and sang the anthem Faith of Our Fathers. The Fellowship of Orthodox Christians in America is an official organization of the Orthodox Church in America and Orthodox Christians of all jurisdictions are welcome to become part of the Fellowship s work and service. Pulley Disclaimers by Renee Knight 55-PLUS CLUB On Thursday, August 4, members of the 55+ Club took advantage of a beautiful August afternoon, and enjoyed the Cleveland Indians game at Progressive Field. Making things even better, the Indians snapped a three -game losing streak with a 9-2 win over the Minnesota Twins (sorry, Fr. John and family). Clearly the good luck charm, the 55+ Club has purchased tickets to EVERY remaining Indians home game this season! Of course, we are just kidding but thanks for helping the Tribe break the losing streak!! August

10 HEALTH HINT 104 AUGUST 2016 Insect Bites Most of the reactions caused by insect bites and stings are mild causing redness, itching, stinging, or minor swelling. Rarely insect bites and stings from a bee, wasp, hornet, fire ant, or scorpion can result in a severe reaction. Some insects can carry disease also, for example, West Nile virus. The care of an insect bite or sting that has caused a mild reaction is as follows: Move to a safe area to avoid more bites and stings. If needed, remove the stinger. If the stinger is visible, remove it as quickly as possible by scraping the skin horizontally with the edge of a credit card or your fingernail. Wash the area with soap and water. Apply a cool compress to help reduce pain and swelling. If the bite or sting is on the arm or leg, elevate the arm or leg to help reduce swelling. Apply a cream, gel, or lotion to the affected area. Products containing ingredients, such as, hydrocortisone, pramoxine, or lidocaine are helpful to control the pain. Calamine lotion or products containing colloidal oatmeal or baking soda help soothe itchy skin. Over the counter medications such as, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or an antihistamine (Benadryl) can help reduce pain, inflammation, and discomfort. Usually the symptoms disappear in a day or two. If you have concerns notify your doctor. Seek emergency care or call 911 if the injured person is experiencing: Difficulty breathing, Swelling of the lips, eyelids, or throat. Dizziness, faintness, or confusion. Fast heartbeat. Hives. Nausea, cramps, or vomiting. A scorpion sting on a child. While waiting for help, ask the person if they have an epinephrine auto injector such as an EpiPen. If the person needs assistance with the auto injector, press it against the person s thigh and hold it in place for several seconds. Loosen tight clothing and give the person a blanket. Do not give the person anything to eat or drink. Turn the person on their side to prevent choking if he or she is vomiting or bleeding from the mouth. Begin CPR if you are trained to do so if the person shows no signs of circulation such as breathing, lack of a pulse, no movement. Teach children to avoid walking barefoot on the grass, playing in areas where insects nest or congregate, and drinking from soda cans outside. Insect repellents containing DEET, Citronella, and IR3535 can be helpful to use to prevent bites and stings. You will see an EPA Registration number on the product label of an EPA-registered product. 12 the Archangel A Monthly Publication of OUTREACH Archangel Michael Orthodox Church 5025 East Mill Road Broadview Heights, OH August 2016 Lower Level Renovation Update We are pleased to share that one of the first steps in our Lower Level Renovation has been completed. The wallpaper was stripped, walls were sealed, patched and painted and ready to move onto the next phase. As you all know, this major project can only be completed by the support and donations of you our parishioners! The renovation will improve the church school experience for our children, by creating an atmosphere that is conducive to learning and blocking out unnecessary noise. The bulk of our fundraising will be to improve the wall partitions that separate each classroom. Currently, the walls do not keep noise out, making it very distracting for our Sunday School Teachers and Students to teach and learn about the Orthodox faith. If you have not yet pledged or donated, we hope you consider stepping up and help our children grow in the faith. 12 The Archangel
