1 OCEAN DRIVE OCTOBER 2012 MESSENGER Pastor Daryle s Message I THANK MY GOD EVERY TIME I REMEMBER YOU... PHILIPPIANS 1:3 Dear ODPC Family: Have you ever played the childhood game Hide and Seek? Probably you have. And you probably remember then the words Ready or not, here I come! Motivational speaker Billy Zeoli defines being ready as: the right person in the right place at the right time with the right thing to do and to say, and doing it and saying it. In one playoff game with the Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco, the Cowboys were trailing by 15 or 16 points going into the last two minutes. Cowboys coach Tom Landry turned to a young quarterback not too long out of the navy named Roger Staubach. Staubach was not yet Dallas starting quarterback. In a critical situation with Dallas trailing in a playoff game, Landry turned to Roger Staubach and said PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Sermon Series Phili!ians Joyful Living In the beginning of this sermon series we will discuss the Apostle Paul, who lived in trying times but embraced the truth of joyful living. We can have joy, even in hardship. Joy does not come from outward circumstances but from inward strength. As Christians, we must not rely on what we have or what we experience to give us joy but on Christ within us. Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice! (Phil. 4:4) May we share Paul s aspiration and seek to know Jesus Christ more and more. Rejoice with Paul in Philippians, and rededicate yourself to finding joy in Christ. continued on page 2 OCEAN DRIVE PRESBYTERIAN BEGINS The church was officially organized on Friday, April 25th, The original Sanctuary, shown above, was built on a man made hill in OCEAN DRIVE PRESBYTERIAN TODAY Many expansions and new buildings have been added since ODPC began and membership is currently approximately 850 people. OCEAN DRIVE PRESBYTERIAN VISION To glorify God and enjoy God forever. To bring people to saving Faith. To go out and share the Good News of Christ s love.

Many people might have questioned a move like that. Anyone who knew Landry would not imagine that he was throwing in the towel this soon. Still he said, Roger, go in. And Staubach replied, I m ready. And he was. In the next one minute and 57 seconds, Staubach led Dallas to two touchdowns and a field goal. Dallas won the playoff game because this young man fresh out of the Navy was ready. Are you ready? Live each day so there will be no regrets. Relationships are the most important things in life - relationship with one another and relationship with God. All the food that is prepared is normally eaten with seconds provided when available. We also have Children s Church which includes bible studies, appropriate games and discussions about our Lord. Adults and young adults direct this activity. Hope s Closet has some personal items for our guests such as razors, sunscreen, toothpaste, brushes along with clothing during the winter season. 5 Fortunately, the Grand Strand has been spared so far this season. PREPARE PREPARE PREPARE HAVE A PLAN HAVE TRANSPORT- ATION HAVE SUPPLIES HAVE A PLACE TO GO HOWEVER, IT IS TOO EARLY TO GET COMPLACENT ABOUT EMERGENCY PREPARATION. BY WOODIE FOX Some of the most damaging storms to impact the Grand Strand have hit in the month of October. Please be reminded that your safety and welfare is largely a matter of taking personal responsibility and action in advance of such a storm. The time and resources of local emergency response personnel will be at a premium both in advance of and during any hurricane events. Please remember that only mandatory evacuation orders will be issued and all persons in areas cited for evacuation must be ready to leave by announced deadlines. This means that all church members should have their evacuation plans in place and a family (or individual) emergency preparedness kit available. All coastal residents need to know what evacuation zone they are in and their designated evacuation routes. Previous issues of the ODPC Messenger have listed websites with emergency preparedness information relevant to residents of Horry County, SC and Brunswick County, NC and local TV stations that will carry up-to-date weather information. Another good source for up-to-date weather information is the website of the National Weather Service office in the Wilmington area. ( You can also sign up for free emergency alerts at the Nixle website ( Additionally, a copy of Horry County s Know Your Zone Hurricane Guide is available for REVIEW in the Welcome Center at church. As a reminder to residents, business owners or others who will want to re-enter the City of North Myrtle Beach immediately following a disaster, you may need to show a driver s license, a copy of a recent water bill, or property tax bill, a rental agreement or other form of identification that proves residency or ownership within the city.

6 A little bit of something about everything at Ocean Drive... read on... Beach Baptism by Ren and Anna Cherven Servants of God SERVING GOD IN THE SENIOR WORLD For the past fifteen years we have served a weekly ministry at Summit Place and Myrtle Beach Manor. We now feel that it is time to turn this ministry over to someone who is prepared to commit their time to this rewarding outreach. In the process of bringing God s word to others we have established personal relationships with staff and residents. The Activity Directors at both locations help in gathering the residents together for one hour. It is called the Sermon Series and is supported by the Nuture Team. The hour typically consists of the following: NEW DATE & TIME Starts September 22nd SATURDAY S from 11:00-1:00 If you are grieving the loss of a spouse, child, family member or friend, we invite you to join our weekly meetings at ODPC. This non-denominational, Christ-centered, biblically based ministry can help you during this difficult time. Register by calling the Church Office at or Larry & Rita Wiseman at October 7th at 4 pm Meet in the Shak Baptism is an important step for every believer. If you are a follower of Christ, but have never been baptized, then Baptism is a great next step in your faith. Your next Baptismal opportunity is Sunday, October 7th at 4pm. Please call the Church Office at to sign up. Showing a video of a recent ODPC sermon. Lead the singing of several hymns. ODPC member Phyllis Cassidy has been at the piano for the past years and Phyllis Baldino has been leading. Communion is served monthly by an ODPC Elder or Deacon. This ministry can be done by one couple but we here at ODPC are finding out that many are teaming up to take on a ministry and it has been working quite well, so 2 couples would be great. If you interested in Ministering to Seniors, please call Anna or Ren Cherven at KAREN DAVIS DIRECTOR OF WESTMINSTER PRESCHOOL The first weeks of school have gone by so quickly. We had a great start to our new school year. Now we are in the autumn season and our classrooms reflect the changes that we see at this beautiful time of the year. This is also the time of the year that we have our fundraiser and sell Enjoy the City. Enjoy the City is a coupon book with many discounts for local businesses. These booklets will be for sale at the cost of $20.00 each in the church Welcome Center on Sunday mornings, October 7th & 14th. Those who purchased them last year said that they were full of great deals. Come purchase a book and support our church preschool, Westminster. God Bless You All.
