1 OCEAN DRIVE APRIL 2013 MESSENGER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Pastor Daryle s Message Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life Proverbs 4:23 Dear Ocean Drive PC Family, Today more than ever, people are concerned with eating right and exercising to maintain healthy hearts. We spend billions in a quest for fitness, all the while virtually ignoring the eternal heart that beats within the invisible realm of our spirit. Is it any wonder, then, why so many suffer from a weakened spiritual heart condition that makes it nearly impossible to fight the good fight, finish the course, or keep the faith (Timothy 4:7). Like the personal physician for our true hearts, the writer of Proverbs Romans is the NEW Sermon Series Answering Basic Questions About Life The book of Romans is a personal How come I do stuff I hate and I don t do stuff i know I should letter from God to you... be doing? answering basic questions about life, like... The study of the Book of Romans has often proven to be a life God are you out there and do changing exercise. 2 Pastor s message continued from page 1 makes an important recommendation - Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life (Proverbs 4:23). Let s see what practical insights we can draw from these words to guide us in our pursuit of spiritual health. Notice, first of all, that the verse opens with a command; not a wish, not a suggestion, but a direct order. Second, the reason we re ordered to guard our hearts carefully is explained in the later half of the verse, For from it flow the springs of life. Third, this command is given top priority, with all diligence. We re to focus everything at our disposal to accomplish this objective. And, fourth, we re told that the outcome of our entire life depends on how well we obey this order. The heart is where the Holy Spirit communicates truth. So guard that. Preserve that. The springs of life flow from within the holy ground of the heart, meaning God s direction and conviction. Nothing more sacred belongs to you than this vital organ - our spiritual heart. Keep watch over it well. If you ve been neglecting it, there s no better time than today to change. It will make all the difference in the world. Make that commitment today to... Grace and Peace to you in Christ Jesus, Warmly, We spend billions in a quest Daryle P. 3 TELL US ALL ABOUT IT! The Berry Patch by Pastor Mike Berry Whatever does all that mean? It means that if you are miserable, your misery started in you heart. It means that if you are happy and full of joy that your heart is spiritually healthy. Christians should be happy people because they have so much for which to be happy. We have a God who loves us, we have a Savior who has redeemed us from ourselves, and we have the Spirit of God who dwells in our hearts keeping us strong in our faith. These things should keep us beaming from ear to ear all the time. But some Christians don t understand. They wear their religion like a thorny shirt. They complain about commitment and service and do not have or feel the joy of their salvation. Their happiness in their faith is only in their rear view morrow. They are victims of the Dachshund Dilemma. What is that? you ask. There was once a dachshund so long it hadn t any notion how long it took to notify it s tail of its emotion. And so it was that while his eyes were filled with woe and sadness his little tail went on and on because of precious gladness. The message is that it is often hard to get the happiness in our hearts to our face so that others can see it. We have hearts that are filled with joy because of what we know about our faith, but out face does not show it to the world. The un-churched and unsaved in the world need to see our light shine so brightly that it that draws them to it. The old show tune says, When you re smiling, the whole world smiles with you. Turn on your heart light and SMILE. A happy witness will draw more people to Christ than a sad and grumpy one. What a privilege it is to direct the Chancel Choir every week. They are dedicated to the music ministry and allow me to push them beyond their comfort zone. This year s cantata was just such a push into a more stylistically contemporary genre of music. Combining efforts with the Praise Team and Drama Team were an added bonus, and the wonderful orchestra and the well produced Easter video made for a stunningly meaningful cantata. For those of you who worked behind the scenes, I greatly appreciate everything you contributed. Though the guidance of the Holy Spirit, this Easter cantata glorified the Father by honoring the Son. We, in the music ministry, have but one purpose: to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ through music. I pray that you will accept Jesus and Lord and Savior, and come to know Him - Jesus, No Other King! Karen Alexander, Director of Music Big Thank you to all who gave time, talents and full hearts to our Palm Sunday and Easter Services! From Praise Choir to Singers, Musicians, and Techs. 6 ODPC Evangelism and Outreach Mission Explanation Below, as mentioned in the Sunday bulletin, is a couple of the ODPC outreach ministries that we support financially and through periodic and necessary communication. ODPC supports approximately thirty (30) International, National and Local missions and hence, a brief explanation of what their (each) purpose is, and the manner in which they spread the Good News and reach the people that do not know Jesus. Below is a brief about one International and one National mission ODPC supports. In the following months other missions will be introduced similarly. Contact Peter Tibbitts at to join the exciting team and spread the Good News around the world. CENTENARY CHURCH LA CUENCA: INTERNATIONAL Kimi Booher and her husband Raul Molina are currently in Costa Rica living in the region called Talamanca and are directors of a discipleship school for both national and international young adults. They serve the community in which they live full time in many different respects including a sports ministry for young men, spending time with children in their community who are hungry to know the love of Christ; evangelism, visiting homes and teaching the bible to highlight a few objectives; whilst working/partnering with a local church assisting in various new church start-ups in mountain villages. As Ministry Coordinator for the neighborhood, Kimi is working closely with the development of their youth ministry as well as discipling young women and mothers in that local region. Kimi in now involved with VidaNet, a Christian organization that works with short term volunteer groups and brings them to the La Cuenca area and getting even more involved with the locals spreading the Good News. Living with them familiarizes/assists you in understanding the culture, habits and needs required to open their hearts to the Lord. These mission trips which take nationals inland to undiscovered areas in which Christ is not known changes the lives of the youth going and those living in the region. Bibles of various languages are taken for education and study of Jesus as well if needed. NAPAL & WOMEN S MINISTRY (SUNDRA & SAREETA THAPA): NATIONAL The Thapa family are from Nepal and are missionaries involved with numerous tasks for the local and regional communities of Nepal. Saretta has a Phd and is a member of the National Leaders of Christian Women therefore her travels include lecturing and spreading the Good News through family seminars, conferences, establishing schools, extensive prayer groups in numerous home churches and teaching men and women about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. While Sareeta and her husband Sundar visit the people of Nepal they bring medical supplies and bibles to those in need and talk intensely about relationships with God. Their target groups in Nepal have no church, no information about Christ and have been unreached, so adoption of these people in Christ s name is a means of communicating and salvation. It is extremely hard to convert these local people as they are Hindu based and that religion is very hard to convert to Christianity as peer pressure, government regulations, financial assistance, churches and such are at a minimum and shunned. The local Nepal government wants to revert back to a total Hindu base country so the pressure is high for any outside religions to enter and start up. Currently there still is no land available for cemeteries, churches and such for Christians and the percentage of Christians is very low, perhaps 1 million people of the total 30 million who live in Nepal. The Thapa family is supported in general through Christian Aid in which we donate funds specified to this particular ministry.
