1 FALL 2015 MESSENGER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OCEAN DRIVE Dear ODPC Family, My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest. -Exodus 33:14 Summer is almost over and Back to School has begun! For you parents, do you remember those big and sometimes traumatic days when you dropped off your child at the first day of preschool, or first grade, or high school, or college? My wife and I just experienced this again with the dropping off of our only son to college. I was surprised at how emotional it was for me and reminded again of the importance of spending time on important things. That is spending time on the things that God values and are precious, like relationships and people. I have to tell you a little story about all of this. My wife and I were struggling with this letting go and with worrying about what ifs continued on page 2 Congregational Meeting Scheduled For Vote on Question of Dismissal from PCUSA Sunday, September 27, 9:30am A Congregational Meeting has been called for Sunday, September 27 at 9:30 am. The purpose of this meeting is to review the discernment process since the previous Congregational Meeting and to proceed to a vote on the question, Shall the Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church request to be dismissed to ECO (A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians), with its property?. All Active Members should plan on attending this required Congregational Meeting. 2 message continued from page 1 about the choices our son would or is making while away at college. My wife, Ann, said she felt like God was telling her to go to the devotional for the day that she often reads and God had a special message for us that I want to share with you. I do so as a confirmation again that God is loving and gracious and concerned about all the little details of our lives and we can have peace about that. Here is the devotion from Jesus Calling Aug. 23: ENTRUST YOUR LOVED ONES of the importance of spending time on TO ME; release them important things. into My protective care. They are much safer with Me than in your clinging hands. If you let a loved one become an idol in your heart, you endanger that one - as well as yourself. Remember the extreme measures I used with Abraham and Isaac. I took Isaac to the very point of death to free Abraham from son-worship. Both Abraham and Isaac suffered terribly because of the father s undisciplined emotions. I detest idolatry, even in the form of parental love. When you release loved ones to Me, you are free to cling to My hand. As you entrust others into My care, I am free to shower blessings on them. My Presence will go with them whenever they go. and I will give them rest. This same Presence stays with you, as you relax and place your trust in Me. Watch to see what I will do. Genesis 22:9-12; Ephesians 3:20; Exodus 33:14 Thank you God for the constant reminder that you are there with me and you care about me. Thank you that I can trust you with every little detail of life and you know what s best for me. I am in awe again of this and humbled. And by the way God, my Son says thank you, too! Smile. Grace and Peace to you and yours in Christ Jesus, Warmly, Pastor Daryle I was... reminded again 2nd Annual Fall Frolic Dinner Dance Friday, October pm, LFLC All are welcome for a fun night of swingin, steppin, and dinin. Starting Sunday, September 13, 10:45am - 12:00pm, Room A224 Given by Mrs. Donna Beam and Cheryl Smarrella, this year long course is truly life changing, and students will gain a rock solid biblical foundation that will open their eyes to the amazingness of the Gospel and give them the tools to share the epic life of Jesus (and His epic love for us) with others. This class also serves as a conformational course, giving students that complete it, the choice to make their profession of faith and participate in a Baptism, therefore qualifying them for active membership of ODPC! All current 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are welcome and we would love to have you! Snacks and water will be provided. For more information or to sign up, please call Abbi Meckley at or Cheryl Smarrella at Save The Date Friday, October 30, 6:00-7:15pm This is an all family church event. If you want to participate, please contact Michelle Estep at the church office to get your car registered and receive all the trunk details.
5 Evangelism & Outreach Haiti Mountain Mission March 27 - April 3, 2015 Missioners: Chris Carlisle (NC), Sue Kreuger and Laura Bowers (SC), Arba Montgomery (VA), and driver/translator Ancy Fils - Aime (Haiti) Our Children s evangelism Program was presented in three schools: Transfiguration in Duvillon, Esprit in Marigot, and St. Thomas in Lavenneau. All are Haiti Education Foundation (HEF) schools. The program was not given at Christ Roi in Monchil on this trip. We were also able to bring our program to two churches, one in Ft. Jacques above Port au Prince and another outside of Jacmel, near the UN encampment (150 children attend this program). All the children were given Creole language Bible story coloring books from Manna Ministries along with some crayons, had a time for music with singing, and watched the Jesus film. We also brought hundreds of candy canes, giving one to each child and told them how they related to Jesus. At the request of Pastor Beliziare (Jacmel), Chris gave additional instruction to about 50 young adults on planning their future and leading a Christian life. Eye glass clinics were held in Ft. Jacques, Duvillon, Marigot, Lavenneau, and Port au Prince (at Quisqueya Chapel). We concentrated on reading glasses only, not attempting to fit people for distance glasses. Everyone receiving glasses also received a glasses bag made by the ODPC Stitching Ministry, along with sunglasses, eye drops, and an inspirational tract from the World Missionary Press. We brought two Haitian doctors and many medicines up to Duvillon and conducted a medical clinic there. Over 70 people of all ages were seen, each one receiving something, if only vitamins or anti-acids. At the doctors request, each child seen was given some anti-worming medication. All the medicines were given out in bags made by the Stitching Ministry at our request. We only hold the one medical clinic far up in the mountains as we were asked some years ago by the doctors not to do so at the schools near Jacmel, as those people had access to medical facilities. We had to explain this to the priest and vestry of Christ Roi Church in Monchil (suburb of Jacmel) when they asked us to finance a medical clinic instead of holding the eye glass clinic. Once we explained that we had neither the money nor the permission of the local doctors, they were OK with just having the reading glasses clinic, which we will do on our next visit. We had met with the Pere Donald Metellus, the priest who oversees the schools, along with the vestry of his church in Monchil, to explain what our emphasis is, to learn their expectations (they wanted our money for a clinic), and to discuss and iron out any differences. It started out as a tense meeting, but ended with smiles. We later met with Pere Donald alone just to get to know each other better. He is the new priest and his parish covers all the schools we visit, so we need to have a good working relationship. One of our former team members had made uniforms for the children in one school which we gave to Pere Donald for distribution. We had also brought other clothing, soccer and basketballs, and dolls to give to the children (the balls went to the schools). The next mission trip is planned for January Sue Kreuger
6 HURRICANE SEASON IS HERE AGAIN IT S TIME TO PREPARE NOW! June 1st is the beginning of hurricane season along the Atlantic Coast. Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church has a Disaster Management Team and a Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan in place. Deacon Ed Loehr serves as the Disaster Management Coordinator for South Carolina (DMC-SC), John Donaldson, the Disaster Management Coordinator for North Carolina (DMC-NC). and Deacon Sally Hucks serves as the Chairperson for the church s Undershepherd Ministry. The following contact information is provided as a resource in the event of a disaster: Ed Loehr (DMC SC) eedloehr1@sc.rr.com Cell: (843) John Donaldson (DMC NC) jdseatrail@atmc.net Home: (910) , Cell: (301) Sally Hucks (Undershepherds) sahucks@sc.rr.com Home:(843) , Cell: (843) If an order is given to evacuate coastal areas of Horry County, South Carolina and/or Brunswick County, North Carolina, our Disaster Plan will be implemented. Our church buildings and property will be secured and undershepherds will call each member of their flock. The goal of these calls will be to verify that you have a plan, transportation, adequate supplies and a secure place to go. It is easy to procrastinate on preparing for the next disaster, but if you wait until a disaster is eminent, then it may be too late to get prepared. The amount of time you have will depend on the hazard. In the case of a hurricane you might have a day or two to get ready. But it is likely that many others will also be late preparing and the supplies you need may no longer be readily available. Many disasters allow no time for gathering even the basic necessities, which is why planning and early preparation is essential. The following list is provided to help you build your personal disaster kit. This list may need to be supplemented with additional items that you deem necessary for your personal circumstances. List of medicines and written medical history of needs Picture ID Copy of local utility bills if you don t have an in-state driver s license Credit cards and cash sufficient to meet your needs for 3 days minimum Insurance papers Family contact list Bottled water sufficient for minimum of three days One gallon per person per day Non-perishable food sufficient for minimum of three days Can opener Blankets and pillows Wrench and /or pliers to turn off utilities Clothes Cell phone and charger Battery powered weather radio with tone alert and extra batteries Flashlight and extra batteries or candles First aid kit Garbage bags with ties for personal sanitation Whistle to signal for help if needed Dust mask or cotton tee shirt to serve as air filter Any unique family need items such as baby formula, diapers, pet supplies It is also recommended that you notify family/friends regarding your destination plans if an evacuation is ordered. A comprehensive resource for disaster preparedness may be reviewed on the internet at
